Just moments before Saturday’s kickoff between Georgia and South Carolina, Dawgs247 broke the reports that Georgia quarterback D’Wan Mathis did not travel to Columbia and will be leaving the team.
Mathis is 12 for 30 on the year for 89 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. He was pulled for Stetson Bennett following a rough start to the season against Arkansas. USC transfer JT Daniels has started under center for the Dawgs past two games.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart commented on the status of Mathis in his postgame press conference Saturday night.
“D’Wan and I have had several conversations,” Smart said. “D’wan has been very communicative. He’s handled things really well. The stuff that goes on with D’Wan and our team and us is really a team-related deal so I’m not really going to comment on it. But D’Wan’s handled everything with first class.”
The redshirt freshman who flipped his commitment to Ohio State underwent brain surgery to remove a cyst in 2019. Many thought he would never play another snap of football but now Mathis will now enter the NCAA transfer portal in hopes to find a starting job on a new team.
