Duke’s Shavit Kimchi named ACC Freshman of the Year for women’s tennis

Duke’s Shavit Kimchi was named the ACC Freshman of the Year for women’s tennis after a 17-12 singles mark and 14 doubles wins in her debut season.

Duke women’s tennis team member Shavit Kimchi earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors on Friday.

Kimchi also made the All-ACC Third Team, the only Blue Devil to make one of the three all-conference squads.

Kimchi, the 12th female tennis player from Duke to win the award, finished the 2024 season with a 17-12 record in singles and a 14-13 record in doubles. She remained the frontrunner for the award all season after five ACC Freshman of the Week honors.

The freshman also dominated in the clutch. She provided the match-clinching point for the Blue Devils in seven different matchups, tied for the most in a season in school history.

“She worked tremendously hard this year and it is great that coaches in our conference have recognized that,” Duke coach Jamie Ashworth said in a team release about the award. “The ACC has a long-standing tradition of producing great freshmen tennis players and having her name on this list next to some of the all-time greats is something she should be proud of.”

Kimchi also finished conference play with an 8-5 record in singles.

Duke men’s tennis dismantles Alabama, advances to Sweet 16

The Blue Devils men’s tennis team took four out of five points from Alabama on Saturday to advance to the Sweet 16.

For the third time in 2024, the Duke Blue Devils are moving on to the Sweet 16.

Following in the footsteps of both men’s and women’s basketball, the Blue Devils men’s tennis team dominated AlabamaΒ on Saturday to advance out to the round of 16.

The Blue Devils struck first with the doubles point. Faris Khan and Teddy Truwit surgically took down the Tide’s Roan Jones and Andrii Zimnokh for a 6-1 victory before Garrett Johns and Pedro Rodenas took the No. 1 match to clinch the best-of-three point.

Rodenas kept rolling in singles. After a rain delay moved the two teams indoors, he took down Matias Ponce De Leon in the No. 2 match in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).

After he didn’t contribute during the doubles portion of the match, Duke’s Connor Krug won the No. 4 match over Enzo Aguiard 6-4, 6-4 to pull the Blue Devils within one point of clinching.

Khan dropped his singles rematch against Jones to give the Crimson Tide a heartbeat, but the Blue Devils’ Andrew Zhang won the day. He defeated Zimnokh 6-4, 6-4 for the winning point, moving Duke on to the next round.

Duke took down UNC Asheville 4-0 during Friday’s opening round to set up the battle with the Crimson Tide.

The Blue Devils will face TCU on May 11 for the chance to advance to the quarterfinals.

Ten different Duke teams within the top 25 of their respective rankings

It’s been a great spring in Durham as 10 different Blue Devils teams are inside the top 25 in their respective sport’s rankings.

If you like rooting for all college sports, no matter the format or field, there are few better schools to follow this spring than Duke.

The Blue Devils have 10 teams within the top 25 of their respective rankings as of Thursday.

No team on campus is better than the softball squad. The Blue Devils have a chance to break a litany of program records this season, and they have a 30-3 record after Wednesday’s 6-1 win over Charlotte. Duke welcomes North Carolina to campus for a weekend series starting on Friday.

Duke men’s lacrosse, the No. 3 team in the country, follows close behind with a 10-2 record on the year. The Blue Devils sat atop the country for a brief period before a big loss to Syracuse a few weeks ago, but they are undoubtedly still a national contender.

The Duke women’s lacrosse team also made its respective ranking, as did both golf teams and tennis teams. Baseball, rowing, and women’s track and field also made the cuts.
