Duke offensive coordinator says ‘things are starting to slow down’ for Maalik Murphy

Offensive coordinator Jonathan Brewer offered a promising vote of confidence for Duke quarterback Maalik Murphy’s progress on Monday.

It wasn’t long ago when it felt like the biggest complaint Duke football fans had about the offense stemmed from the pocket.

Quarterback [autotag]Maalik Murphy[/autotag], a former Texas Longhorn in his first year as a starter, opened the ACC schedule with 484 yards and three touchdowns in three games. He completed fewer than 51% of his passes and averaged fewer than 5.5 yards per attempt over that run, a stretch he concluded with 70 yards on 24 attempts against the Florida State Seminoles.

Over the past three games, however, the offense has looked like a new unit, and Murphy’s play has been a critical reason why. The first-year Blue Devil racked up 865 yards against SMU, Miami, and NC State, including his first career 300-yard game against the Hurricanes. He’s thrown eight touchdowns in the last 12 quarters to bring his season total to 22, just two shy of a longstanding single-season school record.

His completion percentage jumped up to 61.7%, and he’s averaged 7.2 yards per attempt over this recent run of form.

“He’s been more comfortable in what we’ve been doing,” offensive coordinator Jonathan Brewer said on Monday. “I think for him, he’s feeling confident in the speed of the game. Things are starting to slow down for him.”

Brewer, who also joined the Duke program this offseason, thinks fans should keep Murphy’s inexperience before this season. He only started two games at his old school, and the former four-star prospect is just 20 years old.

“We just have to keep remembering that this is his first year being the guy and really playing,” Brewer said. “Things are starting to slow down and he’s starting to see things more clearly in that world.”

Duke running back Jaquez Moore expected to return in 2025, Manny Diaz says

Duke football coach Manny Diaz revealed on Monday that running back Jaquez Moore should return for the 2025 season.

The Duke football team will honor several seniors at its final home game on Saturday, a night battle against the Virginia Tech Hokies, but it sounds like one longtime Blue Devil will return to Durham next fall.

Head coach [autotag]Manny Diaz[/autotag] said on Monday that running back [autotag]Jaquez Moore[/autotag], who missed most of the season due to injury, will aim for another year of eligibility in 2025.

“He’s been a tough miss for us this year,” Diaz said. “We think he’s one of the best players on our roster, so we’re excited about the idea that we have a chance to welcome him back next year.”

Moore spent the past four seasons with the program, finishing second on the roster with 674 yards and six touchdowns in 2023. He picked up 24 yards and a touchdown in the opener against Elon, and he gained another 11 yards on three attempts against Northwestern in Week 2 before leaving the game with an injury.

He’s only taken the field once since, a single carry for no gain against the North Carolina Tar Heels in Week 5.

Moore can retain redshirt eligibility with four games played, so Diaz said he should play against Virginia Tech or Wake Forest the following week, but he won’t take the field in both games.

Duke run defense set for tough matchup against Virginia Tech’s Bhayshul Tuten in Week 12

Ahead of Duke’s matchup with Virginia Tech, get to know the Hokies’ biggest offensive threat: running back Bhayshul Tuten.

At 7-3, the Duke Blue Devils could build upon an already impressive 2024 football season over the final two games. The first of those chances comes on Saturday night when they face the Virginia Tech Hokies.

The Blue Devils’ defense has been their strength so far this season, specifically the secondary. However, their run defense hasn’t been the greatest, which could make for a poor matchup with the Hokies.

Duke has allowed 149.3 yards per game on the ground this season, 71st among FBS teams. The Blue Devils improve on a per-play basis, moving up to 44th at 3.83 yards allowed per carry, and they’ve only given up 10 rushing touchdowns in 10 games, but it’s a far cry from their pass defense (12th in yards per attempt).

On the flip side, the Virginia Tech rushing offense ranks 36th in the nation with 185.3 yards per game. The Hokies are one of five ACC teams averaging more than five yards per attempt, and that is mostly carried by running back Bhayshul Tuten.

On the season, Tuten amassed 951 yards and 12 touchdowns on 146 attempts, an average of 6.51 yards per tote. He’s eclipsed 100 yards five times, including a 266-yard performance against Boston College that included three trips to the end zone.

Quarterback Kyron Drones also deserves attention for the Hokies’ offense on the ground. The redshirt junior has added 336 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

Those two have more than 69% of the team’s rushing production in 2024. If Duke is to win this game, the key will be limiting Tuten and Drones.

Latest CBS Sports bowl projections have Duke football facing new conference rival

With the Blue Devils already bowl-eligible, the latest bowl projections from CBS Sports have them facing a new conference rival.

Another week has come and gone in the college football season, leaving just two more before the end of the regular season. With that comes more bowl projections.

The Blue Devils (7-3, 3-3) have already earned their bowl eligibility, so now it’s just a matter of who they’ll face. According to Jerry Palm’s most recent bowl projection for CBS Sports, Duke could thrown down with a new conference rival.

Palm put Duke against the California Golden Bears in the Sun Bowl on New Year’s Eve. The game would take place at 2 p.m. Eastern time in El Paso, Texas.

California is projected to make a bowl, but the Golden Bears (5-5) are still searching for their sixth win of the season. After a strong 3-0 start, they’ve lost five of their last seven. Each of those defeats came by one score, and three of them came by one or two points.

California will finish the season against Stanford and SMU, needing a victory over one of the two to secure a spot in the postseason.

Broadcast information revealed for the Week 14 Duke football game at Wake Forest

The ACC revealed the kickoff time and broadcast information for Duke football’s regular-season finale against Wake Forest.

The Duke Blue Devils will play their final regular-season football game of the year on ACC Network, the conference announced on Monday.

Duke travels to Wake Forest in Week 14 for an in-state battle with the Demon Deacons, and the ACC slotted them for a noon kickoff in their Week 14 schedule.

The Demon Deacons lost to the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday, a second straight defeat that dropped them to 4-6 for the season. They’ve won just two of their six conference games in 2024, and those victories came against Stanford and NC State, two teams with a combined 4-9 record in ACC play.

Wake Forest has looked especially vulnerable on the defensive side of the ball. The Demon Deacons have given up more than 437 yards per game this season, the 16th-most among FBS teams. For comparison, Duke sits third in the ACC with 341.0 yards per contest.

The Blue Devils could earn bragging rights over the entire state of North Carolina with a win. Duke chased down North Carolina after falling behind by 20 points back in Week 5, and when paired with a Week 11 win over NC State, one more victory would give it a season sweep.

Former Duke football star Noah Gray scores his first touchdown of the NFL season

Former Duke football star Noah Gray, now playing for the Kansas City Chiefs, scored his first touchdown of the 2024 season on Sunday.

Former Duke football star Noah Gray scored his first touchdown of the 2024 season on Sunday in one of the biggest games of the NFL season.

Gray, now a member of the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs (9-0), caught a 2-yard scoring pass from superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the final three minutes of the first half against the Buffalo Bills (8-2).

The Chiefs, as the last undefeated team in the league, entered Sunday’s game with a chance to take command of the top seed in the AFC. Gray’s touchdown put them back in front by a single point.

Kansas City drafted Gray in the fifth round back in 2021, and he entered Sunday’s game with 866 receiving yards and four touchdowns for his career. He put together one of the best games of his career against the San Francisco 49ers on October 20, picking up 66 yards on four receptions, and he amassed 19 receptions for 221 yards through the Chiefs’ first nine games.

Gray ended his four-year collegiate career with 105 receptions for 948 yards and eight touchdowns in Durham. His best year came in 2019 when he caught 51 passes for 392 yards and three scores.

Duke football earns two votes in updated AP Poll after Week 12

The Associated Press revealed its updated college football rankings on Sunday, including two votes for the Duke Blue Devils.

The Duke Blue Devils received two votes in the updated AP Top 25 College Football Poll on Sunday, one more than they did last week.

Head coach [autotag]Manny Diaz[/autotag] and his players got a weekend off after defeating the NC State Wolfpack last Saturday, improving Duke’s record to 7-3 for the season and 3-3 against ACC opponents. In Diaz’s first season with the program, the Blue Devils got off to their first 5-0 start since 1994 and defeated the Wolfpack and the North Carolina Tar Heels in the same year for the first time since 2013.

With Louisville’s last-second loss to Stanford, only three teams from the ACC remained within the top 25 after Week 12. The Miami Hurricanes (11th) and SMU Mustangs (13th) seem destined for a clash in the conference championship game with a place in the College Football Playoff on the line.

However, if Miami loses once or the Mustangs lose twice, the Clemson Tigers (17th) would slide into place as a potential challenger.

The top five teams remained unchanged with the Oregon Ducks remaining atop the nation despite only beating the Wisconsin Badgers by three points. With their two votes, the Blue Devils unofficially sit in a tie for 35th with Colorado State and James Madison.

Duke football receives close to a dozen votes in the US LBM Coaches Poll

Despite Duke football sitting on a Week 12 bye, the Blue Devils received nine votes in the US LBM Coaches Poll on Sunday.

The Duke Blue Devils took the weekend off in Week 12, but they still received nine votes in the US LBM Coaches Poll released on Sunday.

In his first season with the program, head coach Manny Diaz has reversed some trends in Durham. He took the school to its first 5-0 start in 30 years, and with Duke’s 20-point comeback over the North Carolina Tar Heels and 29-19 victory over NC State, the Blue Devils swept both of those schools in one season for the first time since 2013.

Duke’s 7-3 record is tied for the fourth-best among ACC teams, and the ESPN Football Power Index gives them more than a 26% chance to sweep Virginia Tech and Wake Forest for a 9-3 regular-season record.

The Miami Hurricanes, also on a bye this weekend, broke back into the top 10 to narrowly remain ahead of the SMU Mustangs (12th) as the top team in the ACC. Should they win out, those two programs would meet in Charlotte for the conference title game, but the Clemson Tigers (16th) await if one of them stumbles along the way. With Louisville losing to Stanford, those are now the only three ranked ACC teams.

Duke football stays within top 10 ACC teams in ESPN FPI rankings after Week 12 bye

The Duke Blue Devils held within the top 60 of the ESPN Football Power Index after their Week 12 bye.

The Duke Blue Devils didn’t play football on Saturday, but they still slipped down two spots to 58th in the ESPN Football Power Index rankings after Week 12.

Despite their 7-3 record, the Blue Devils are still considered just the 10th-best team in the conference by the popular analytical formula. In fact, the North Carolina Tar Heels remain eight spots above them despite having a 6-4 record that includes a loss in Durham back in Week 5.

FPI gives Duke a 27.6% chance to win its remaining two games against Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. The Hokies, just 5-5 despite building second-half leads over the Miami Hurricanes and Clemson Tigers, have remained all the way up at 33rd.

The Demon Deacons lost to UNC on Saturday, falling to 4-6 for the season and staying 88th on the rankings.

With Stanford’s upset of Louisville, the ACC has become a three-team race. The Hurricanes (10th) and SMU Mustangs (15th) control their own destiny, but Clemson (12th) has already secured its 7-1 record in case either team slips up the rest of the way.

Duke football schedule: Are the Duke Blue Devils playing today?

Are the Duke Blue Devils playing today? Here’s a look at the schedule and the games to come.

Will the Duke Blue Devils be on the field today in Week 12 of the college football schedule?

Following a 29-19 victory over the NC State Wolfpack in Raleigh last weekend, Duke is on a bye week and will return to the field on Nov. 23 with a home game against Virginia Tech.

In his first season with the program, head coach Manny Diaz has already etched his name into Duke football history. The Blue Devils won their first five games of the season for the first time this century, and their Week 11 victory gave them a season sweep of the Wolfpack and North Carolina Tar Heels for the first time since 2013.

Quarterback [autotag]Maalik Murphy[/autotag] could make his own mark in the final two weeks of the season. With 22 passing touchdowns in 2024, he sits just two short of Anthony Dilweg’s decades-old program record. However, he and the offense will have their hands full outscoring the Hokies and star running back Bhayshul Tuten. Virginia Tech came within four points of taking down Miami before leading the Clemson Tigers at halftime last weekend.

Here’s a full refresher on the 2024 Duke football schedule.
