Former Buff D’Shawn Schwartz prepared for second run with Team Colorado

Ahead of tomorrow’s first-round game, D’Shawn Schwartz is playing some of the best basketball of his career

Ahead of his second stint with Team Colorado, former CU Buffs guard/forward D’Shawn Schwartz is playing some of the best basketball of his life.

During this week’s training camp for The Basketball Tournament, Schwartz stood out as one of the team’s top scorers, a familiar role for the lefty shooter. Team Colorado head coach and current CU men’s basketball assistant coach Zach Ruebesam believes Schwartz is playing with plenty of confidence heading into Saturday’s opening game.

“The TBT is so hard because someone could go for 30 points one night and it might be another guy the next night,” Ruebesam said. “But, D’Shawn’s been saying he’s playing the best basketball of his career right now, which you see when he’s out there. He’s very comfortable, he knows what he’s looking for, he’s shooting very confidently. I expect him to play a lot and expect to have a big impact on our team.”

After losing in heartbreaking fashion to the Men of Mackey (Purdue alumni) last year, Schwartz is looking to bounce back from the eight points, 10 rebounds and three assists he had in that first-round defeat. With Schwartz’s confidence flourishing, he’s also looking to learn from his teammates who have NBA experience.

“(I’ve) really been working on building that confidence back in my shot off the dribble, coming off a lot more ball screens, coming up on off-ball screens,” Schwartz said. “Learning from other guys, talking to George King, (Andre) Roberson and getting as much knowledge from these guys, I think that’s what it’s about.”

The 6-foot-7 forward spent this past year with Le Mans Sarthe Basket in France’s Betclic Elite circuit, the same league that produced recent top overall NBA draft picks Victor Wembenyama and Zaccharie Risacher. Schwartz averaged 7.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game on 39.7% shooting from the field (35.8% from deep) in 34 regular season games.

Schwartz and Team Colorado take on Purple Reign (Kansas State alumni) in round one of the TBT on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT on FS2.

One of three Team Colorado southpaw shooters, D’Shawn Schwartz ready for The Basketball Tournament

Team Colorado features a trio of southpaws who can drain it from deep

Team Colorado is ready for its run at The Basketball Tournament’s $1 million prize.

On Saturday, I witnessed the group of Buffs men’s basketball greats putting in work at the team’s first official practice.  The first practice was full of playbook installation and making sure that each player knew exactly how the coaches wanted them to attack opposing defenses.

But, that didn’t mean there wasn’t enough time to have a little friendly competition. The team broke into smaller groups to practice long-range shooting and one of the first things that the group of us watching noticed was all of the lefties on the team were in the same group. Most basketball teams don’t have a lot of left-handed shooters, but Team Colorado will have three such players in Xavier Johnson, Tre’Shaun Fletcher and D’Shawn Schwartz. I caught up with Schwartz after practice to see if that was intentional:

“I used my GM skills. I grabbed my two lefties and grabbed Jeriah (Horne). and we ended up tying, so we will get them next time.”

As he said, the lefty squad ended up tying a group made up of Evan Battey, Shane Gattling, Dominique Collier and George King. The left/right battle will have to be settled at another practice.

Team Colorado opens against the Men of Mackey (Purdue alumni) on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. MT on ESPN+. The game will be held at the University of Dayton Arena.

The 2022 Las Vegas Summer League wrapped on Sunday with a pair of former Colorado Buffaloes — Jabari Walker and George King — winning it all with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Also playing in the league were McKinley Wright IV (Phoenix Suns), D’Shawn Schwartz (New York Knicks), Tyler Bey (Philadelphia 76ers) and Jeriah Horne (Sacramento Kings). It is, however, yet to be seen how many of those forever Buffs will get NBA playing time.

But especially with Spencer Dinwiddie and Derrick White, who both impressed in the NBA playoffs, Colorado has quite the group of young talent playing in the pros.

Check out the best pictures from the Buffs’ presence in the summer league:

CU Buffs in the NBA: Summer league roundup

Here’s how all six former Buffs performed in the NBA summer league

Colorado Buffaloes fans saw quite a few familiar names make their way to the Las Vegas Summer League.

All eyes were on Portland Trail Blazers rookie Jabari Walker, the most recent Buff playing in the circuit. Walker not only went home as a summer league champ, but he also signed a three-year contract in the process.

But, there were a few other notable players that also used to play college basketball at the CU Events Center. There were a total of six former Buffs who earned NBA summer league roster spots.

Let’s check in on them and recap how each of them performed:

Who are you looking forward to watching in the Summer League?

The Colorado Buffaloes watched Jabari Walker get selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the second round of the 2022 NBA draft.

He is headed for the Summer League, and a handful of other former Buffs are also set for Summer League action. The hope is for them to improve their craft and hopefully make a run at a big league roster spot when the 2022-23 season begins. As we’ve seen with McKinley Wright IV and Tyler Bey, staying on the NBA team as a rookie isn’t always easy, so the Summer League remains a valuable opportunity.

Let’s take a look at the six former Colorado men’s basketball players that will be playing in the 2022 Summer League:

Former Buff D’Shawn Schwartz hits clutch shot in 3-on-3 tourney

Forever Buff D’Shawn Schwartz came up big on a national stage

Remember D’Shawn Schwartz?

The former Colorado Buffaloes basketball guard moved on to George Mason for his final season of collegiate basketball.

Well, Schwartz is making headlines again. Schwartz won his team the 3×3 National Championship and a cool $50,000 with a smooth turnaround jumper on Sunday night in New Orleans.

The Beast Coast Ballers, which is the team Schwartz is on, won a nice chunk of cash for the college basketball seniors who are preparing for the next level after the conclusion of their NCAA careers.

Here is the shot by Schwartz, who showcased his skills one more time in hopes of a future in basketball.

Schwartz dazzled with George Mason this year, finishing with 15.5 PPG and 4.6 rebounds per game.

The remainder of the team featured a player from Creighton and a player from UConn.

Buffs fans are used to Schwartz hitting big shots, and this one from 2019 is usually the first thing that comes to mind.

Whether or not Schwartz gets to the next level remains to be seen, but his decision to move to George Mason worked out well for him and putting on a strong performance on a national stage such as the 3×3 certainly helps his case.
