Drew Dober vs. Jean Silva prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC on ESPN 59

Drew Dober vs. Jean Silva has Fight of the Night potential at UFC Denver. Will it deliver the goods?

[autotag]Drew Dober[/autotag] and [autotag]Jean Silva[/autotag] meet Saturday on the main card of UFC on ESPN 59 from Ball Arena in Denver. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 2-2
UFC main cards, 2024: 54-51-2

Drew Dober vs. Jean Silva UFC on ESPN 59 preview

Dober (27-13 MMA, 13-9 UFC) will enter UFC on ESPN 59 with the opportunity to once again take sole possession of the promotion’s lightweight knockout record. Right now, he’s tied with Dustin Poirier at nine. Dober, 35, who’s 4-2 in his past six bouts, is coming off a hard-fought unanimous decision loss to Renato Moicano this past February. … Silva, a 27-year-old Dana White’s Contender Series alum, hopes to make it three straight wins to kick off his UFC career. Silva (13-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) is turning around quickly after a second-round knockout of Charles Jourdain just two weeks ago at UFC 303.

Drew Dober vs. Jean Silva UFC on ESPN 59 expert pick, prediction

Even though Dober vs. Silva is essentially the quintessential example of a perfect main-card opener, I suppose I should just be grateful that the matchmakers have prominently featured this fight.

Among the matchmaking casualties this card has sustained, Dober – who was initially slated to face Mike Davis – was almost forced off this card if not for the efforts of Silva and the UFC.

Fresh off a second-round starching of Charles Jourdain two weeks ago at UFC 303, Silva will attempt to join the ranks of fighters like Chris Leben and Chas Skelly in regard to record-winning turnarounds in the UFC.

Despite officially standing at just 1-0 opposite UFC-level southpaws, the dynamic of Silva’s game doesn’t change much based on the stance pairing.

I’m not sure how much pressuring Silva will get to do against a fighter like Dober, but I suspect that his countering prowess and power will probably provide problems for the American early. That said, if Dober can survive the early storms, then I suspect that he will be able to pull away with more offense down the stretch.

It feels like a chancy pick and method, but I’ll officially side with Dober to win a nail-biting unanimous decision.

In a 3-round lightweight bout on the main card, Drew Dober and Jean Silva meet Saturday at UFC on ESPN 59 at Ball Arena in Denver. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the UFC on ESPN 59: Dober vs. Silva odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The prelims begin 7 p.m. ET, also on ESPN/ESPN+, while the main card starts at 10 p.m. ET, also on ESPN/ESPN+.

Records: Dober (27-13-0) | Silva (13-2-0)

The veteran Dober is coming off a unanimous-decision loss against Renato Moicano in early February. Going the distance was a rarity, as his previous 5 fights had been decided via KO/TKO, with 4 wins and 1 loss. The last time he went the distance was against Brad Riddell at UFC 263 in June 2021.

Silva has made 2 appearances at the UFC level, both victories via KO/TKO against Westin Wilson and Charles Jourdain. He stopped Jourdain in Round 2 at UFC 303 last time out June 29. His last professional loss came April 21, 2018 at San Jose Super Fight Qualifying: SJSF in a unanimous-decision setback against Gabriel Schlupp de Lima.

The southpaw Dober has a slight 1-inch reach advantage, while Silva has a 5.71-to-4.34 significant strikes landed per minute advantage. Silva is more accurate at 54.44% to 45.80% for Dober, too.

UFC on ESPN 59: Dober vs. Silva picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

SILVA (-115) is the up-and-comer who is rising quickly, while Dober (-105) is the veteran at 35 years old with a lot of mileage on his tires.

The Elevation Fight Team member Dober has averaged about 2 fights per year since March 2022, going 4-2 with 4 KO/TKO wins in the span. The fights generally do not go very long. Silva has 2 knockouts in 2 UFC fights, and he’ll be eager to engage Dober early in a brawl.

For method of victory, SILVA BY KO/TKO OR DQ (+175) on the method of victory 7-way line is a solid value.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 1.5 ROUNDS (-135) is the lean, but go lightly on this particular play.

Dober has been past the halfway mark of Round 2 in 3 of his past 5 fights, with 2 of those bouts ending in Round 1.

Each of Silva’s fights have ended before the midway point of Round 2, but this is a big step up in competition, and it will be tougher for Silva to get Dober finished off early.

Drew Dober restricting thoughts of breaking Dustin Poirier’s KO record at UFC on ESPN 59

Drew Dober admits a pursuit of the lightweight KO record has been disservice in the past, and he won’t repeat mistakes at UFC on ESPN 59.

[autotag]Drew Dober[/autotag] admits a pursuit of the UFC lightweight knockout record has been a disservice to him in the past, so he’s taking some key lessons into Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 59 matchup with Jean Silva.

Dober (27-13 MMA, 13-9 UFC) enters his showdown with Silva (13-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in a tie with Dustin Poirier for most knockout wins in divisional history at nine. He’s had sole possession of the record before, but him and “The Diamond” have juggled it back-and-forth over the years.

Given Silva is a hard-hitting striker himself, there should be chances for Dober to finish the fight on the feet. His motivation to do that is self-serving in the purpose of victory, however, and not to take back the record for himself, because he’s gone down that road before with negative consequences.

“The thing is I received that record not even thinking about,” Dober told MMA Junkie on Tuesday. “I think the moment I started thinking about it, my performances kind of dipped. So no, I’ve stopped thinking about it. Knockout record is great – we’re also tied for the guillotine record (at zero).”

More than any record, Dober is simply grateful for the chance to compete at UFC on ESPN 59, which takes place at Ball Arena in Denver (ESPN, ESPN+). As a Colorado resident, Dober said he needed to be on this card regardless of the circumstances.

Dober, 35, proved that after he went through multiple opponent changes and wanted to stay on the lineup, even if it meant accepting a name like Silva, who is moving up from featherweight and making a quick turnaround from his knockout of Charles Jourdain at UFC 303 on June 29.

“I wanted to fight on July 13 in Denver, Colorado, against anybody,” Dober said. “I honestly didn’t care. The difficult part is I feel I’m all risk and no reward right now. I have the knockout record, and I’m not a ranked opponent right now. I can understand the hesitation (from other fighters), but Jean Silva, he’s a gangster and he accepted it.”

Drew Dober vs. Jean Silva added to UFC on ESPN 59 in Denver

Drew Dober now has an opponent for UFC on ESPN 59 as Jean Silva has stepped up for a quick turnaround.

[autotag]Drew Dober[/autotag] finally has an opponent for UFC on ESPN 59.

Stepping up just days removed from his last fight, [autotag]Jean Silva[/autotag] will fill the “opponent TBA” void for Dober (27-13 MMA, 13-9 UFC) in a lightweight matchup on July 13 at Ball Arena in Denver. The promotion officially announced the matchup on Wednesday.

Dober was originally set to face Mike Davis at the event, but was left without an opponent when “Beast Boy” became injured. Dober wanted to keep the date and has now secured a new foe who just competed at International Fight Week.

Silva (13-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) is coming off a knockout win against Charles Jourdain at UFC 303, and will make a quick 14-day turnaround to compete again. While the performance was impressive, it was blemished by a 1.5-pound weight miss over the featherweight limit. For the fight against Dober, he will have an extra 10 pounds to work with in his fast return to the cage.

Dober will look to rebound from a unanimous decision loss to Renato Moicano in February which halted the momentum of a TKO victory over Ricky Glenn in October.

With the addition, the UFC on ESPN 59 lineup includes:

  • Rose Namajunas vs. Tracy Cortez
  • Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Muslim Salikhov
  • Drew Dober vs. Jean Silva
  • Viviane Araujo vs. Jasmine Jasudavicius
  • Gabriel Bonfim vs. Ange Loosa
  • Julian Erosa vs. Christian Rodriguez
  • Abdul Razak Alhassan vs. Cody Brundage
  • Mariya Agapova vs. Luana Santos
  • Josh Fremd vs. Andre Petroski
  • MarQuel Mederos vs. Nazim Sadykhov
  • Charles Johnson vs. Joshua Van

Mike Davis ‘breaking’ after torn bicep forces him out of UFC on ESPN 59: ‘This kills my f*cking soul’

Injury plagued in recent years, Mike Davis revealed in an emotional post that his UFC Denver fight is off and surgery will be needed.

[autotag]Mike Davis[/autotag] can’t catch a break.

A torn bicep has forced Davis (11-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) out of his UFC on ESPN 59 matchup vs. [autotag]Drew Dober[/autotag] (27-12 MMA, 13-8 UFC) on July 13 at Ball Arena in Denver.

A devastated Davis took to Instagram to post a video of the exact moment the injury happened, as he vented his frustration on his string of bad luck throughout his UFC career.

“Journal entry: June 16, 2024

“This kills me man….

“Completely tore my bicep during my sparring rounds on Tuesday. June 11th. Resulting in 3.5in retraction in my bicep.

“I’m so f*cking disappointed…I try so f*cking hard… I’m dealt such a sh*t hand in life full of skill and talent that I cant even use..

“I trained so f*cking hard for this. Running sprints at the track every week in 100°, Training twice a day, which I NEVER do, Doing extra drills and pad work, Running 3 miles before every.single. session, every. f*cking. day.

“I even prepped my last 3 weeks of camp to be in Colorado so I could adapt.

“So much time, effort and money…for nothing.

“You have no idea how much this kills my f*cking soul.
All I know is that I can’t give up…
I’m the only one left in my life that’s even remotely capable.

“….. I want to give up so bad

“Maybe I should do an online programming degree while I’m sitting with the surgery. I just don’t know anymore
I’m breaking.”

Drew Dober opens up on UFC Fight Night 235 loss to Renato Moicano: ‘In a game of inches, I made mistakes’

Perhaps one bad decision cost Drew Dober the fight against Renato Moicano at UFC Fight Night 235.

Perhaps one bad decision cost [autotag]Drew Dober[/autotag] the fight against [autotag]Renato Moicano[/autotag] at UFC Fight Night 235.

Dober (27-12 MMA, 13-8 UFC) lost a unanimous decision to Moicano (18-5-1 MMA, 10-5 UFC) in Saturday’s co-main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Dober was having success on the feet, but struggled to fend off Moicano’s grappling. With each fighter winning a round heading into Round 3, Dober tried to reverse a Moicano takedown but wound up on his back for the remaining two minutes and a half of the fight. Dober took to Instagram to react to the loss.

“Not the outcome we wanted. In a game of inches, I made mistakes, and @renato_moicano_ufc was the better man tonight. Congratulations to him and his team. I feel no shame in putting everything on the line and testing my abilities against the best in the world.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/C26OkimL_82/

Moicano responded to Dober’s post by paying him respect, and even suggesting who he should fight next.

“Im a huge fan…. On every interview I was saying that you are dangerous!!!
I want to see you fighting Paddy Pimblett next… huge respect for you thank you for the fight.”

Dober, 35, has now lost two of his past three. Prior to his setback against Moicano, Dober earned a Performance of the Night bonus when he finished Ricky Glenn by first-round TKO this past October.

UFC Fight Night 235 results: Renato Moicano cuts wild promo after blood-soaked win over Drew Dober

Renato Moicano defeated Drew Dober and then revealed to the world his 62-year-old father just had another baby.

[autotag]Renato Moicano[/autotag] was drenched in his own blood at UFC Fight Night 235, but walked away victorious.

In the co-main event Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Moicano (18-5-1 MMA, 10-5 UFC) defeated [autotag]Drew Dober[/autotag] (27-12 MMA, 13-8 UFC) by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

The win was earned on the mat as Moicano showed off strong grappling abilities and overcame a nasty second-round gash near his right eye.

Dober consistently denied Moicano’s attempts to advance position, but he struggled to get up off his back as Moicano remained in half guard for much of the fight.

Immediately after the win, Moicano cut a highly anticipated promo on the microphone during which he revealed to the world his 62-year-old father had a baby the day before in Brazil.

The appearance was Moicano’s first since a November 2022 submission of Brad Riddell. He’s now won back-to-back fights and four of his most recent five.

The loss is Dober’s second in three fights. A win over Ricky Glenn is sandwiched between Saturday’s result and a May 2023 loss to Matt Frevola.
