Davide Rigon and DragonSpeed are looking forward to a spiritual defense of the GTD PRO crown at this year’s Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Spiritually, in the sense that Risi Competizione’s new technical partnership with DragonSpeed provides a thread from the beloved IMSA stalwart team that won the class at Daytona last year, and a new-look program from a team that already has a pedigree of success in this race and in various championships around the world, from sports cars to IndyCar.

Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado and Daniel Serra came to Daytona with different Ferrari customer teams in GTD, but Rigon went with DragonSpeed, and is not only comforted by Risi’s presence but also impressed with DragonSpeed’s professionalism and commitment to this new endeavor — its first full-time GT entry.

“Honestly, everything is going on very well,” Rigon said after the final practice session on Friday morning. “During the Roar [Before the 24] we really improved the car a lot. In qualy, I was very happy about the balance of the car.

“We’re working well. The team is new — let’s see how it’ll be with the pit stops, but we’re looking very well prepared. The race is very long. We know how difficult it is to achieve a result here, so let’s try to be perfect in every pit stop.”

DragonSpeed is receiving mechanics and engineering support from Risi — those walking around the garages will also spot Risi golf carts driving around near the DragonSpeed garage, for instance — but the rest is all Elton Julian’s squad.

“Straightaway, we have a very good feeling and very good coordination,” Rigon said. “This is the beginning of a long season. We start from here, but I think there is a lot to come. A lot to fix but at the moment, I think we start at a really high level.”

The bright yellow No. 81 Ferrari 296 GT3 is Ferrari’s only GTD PRO car from its massive eight-car contingent. The other seven will be fighting for GTD honors, making up one-third of the field at Daytona.

Rigon is joined at Daytona by fellow Ferrari Competizione GT factory drivers Miguel Molina and Thomas Neubauer, and also by Albert Costa, who is so far the only driver confirmed for a full-time role at DragonSpeed.

“Of course, it’s an honor to be in the PRO category, when you work with pro drivers like Costa, Molina, and Neubauer,” Rigon said. “We’re all aligned on the setup, on the strategy, and so on — that is the difference. But the car balance and everything is exactly the same as GTD. And then for sure, we will have some fights during the race.”

It helps that new IMSA race procedure rules, aimed at mitigating cross-class interference between GTD PRO and GTD cars, will give Rigon and his co-drivers one less headache to worry about.

“This is much better,” he stressed. “Last year, we had a lot of fighting with GTDs, which was not really necessary. It was just actually stupid to fight against another class that is not in our race. We both lose time when we fight each other, and we risk just for nothing.

“This is helping us a little bit, I think. It’s a bit easier for TV to see that when we fight, we fight with the PRO class and not with the GTD. Qualifying was also much nicer yesterday — just with the PRO class, we can work more with the slipstream, it’s a bit more technical and we’re not just avoiding traffic.”

Practice form has left some of the Ferrari personnel downplaying their chances of winning one class, let alone both GT classes. “We are nowhere on speed,” admitted factory driver Pier Guidi, who will start 14th in GTD tomorrow in the No. 21 AF Corse 296. “I think this is our position and we will stay there.”

Rigon though, continues to push, with the sole aim of standing in victory lane for Ferrari once again.

“It would be amazing, but I think this time will be tough for us,” he said. “I was lucky — I did a perfect lap. But even then I was just P12 in my class. So it’s very tough. I think the balance, we don’t have so much to improve.

“I think we’ll give our best, and let’s see in the race. Maybe some slipstream or something will help us, but at the moment it will be a very tough race. But as a DragonSpeed team and Ferrari, we want to prepare the maximum for the season, so we’re looking forward.”

New IMSA GTD PRO entrant DragonSpeed has confirmed that it will partner with Risi Competizione in its 2025 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship campaign. The team has also completed its Rolex 24 At Daytona line-up in the No. 81 Ferrari 296 GT3 with the addition of Ferrari aces Davide Rigon, Miguel Molina and Thomas Neubauer joining the previously announced Albert Costa.

Elton Julian’s DragonSpeed team entered a pair of races at the end of the 2024 season — the Battle on the Bricks at Indianapolis in GTD and Motul Petit Le Mans in GTD PRO — with its eye on a full season in 2025. The team has dipped its toes into many facets of motorsports and boasts three Rolex 24 victories along with a 24 Hours of Le Mans win in LMP2.

Risi has been a staple of IMSA competition for years with Ferrari, competing in the Michelin Endurance Cup in recent seasons, including a Rolex 24 victory in January. Giuseppe Risi’s outfit isn’t expected to field a car under its own banner in 2025, but will contribute technical resources to DragonSpeed.

The triple-platinum driver roster — only Neubauer carries a gold rating from the FIA — is full of firepower, including a 2024 Le Mans winner for Ferrari in Molina. Costa competed with Conquest Racing alongside Manny Franco in GTD last season to good effect, including a Motul Petit Le Mans victory. Rigon was part of the Daytona-winning Risi squad in 2024.

DragonSpeed will have its familiar stars-in-stripes livery on a primarily yellow No. 81 296. Ferrari is looking to defend its Daytona victory as well as add to the 296 GT3s success, already at 200 and counting in only two years of competition.

DragonSpeed will return to the Rolex 24 At Daytona for the 62nd running of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship’s flagship enduro. After several seasons based in Europe, team principal Elton Julian is bringing the three-time LMP2 class winners at Daytona back to contest all five rounds of the Michelin Endurance Cup.

Kyffin Simpson is the latest to join the driving squad for the No. 81 DragonSpeed ORECA at Daytona, alongside his 2023 European Le Mans Series co-champion — and 2023 Rolex 24 LMP2 victor — James Allen of Australia and 2022 LMP2 winning Bronze driver Eric Lux.

“With Kyffin’s addition, I believe our driver lineup will match anyone’s in LMP2 at the Rolex in 2024,” said Julian. “We’re really looking forward to taking full advantage of his phenomenal growth as a driver over the last couple of years. Having Eric and James back in the fold just strengthens our chances of being in contention going into the final stages of this great event. I think we’re positioned for a strong homecoming to, and future in, IMSA, who really put out the welcome mat to make this program possible.”

Following Simpson’s climb up the U.S. open-wheel ladder and recent sports car racing success in the GTD class of the WeatherTech Championship and elsewhere, 2024 will also see the 19-year-old from the Cayman Islands make his debut in the NTT IndyCar Series with Chip Ganassi Racing. CGR managing director Mike Hull welcomed his new driver’s IMSA gig.

“For Kyffin to have an opportunity with a team at DragonSpeed’s level not only gives him a shot at winning, but is also an ideal warm-up for his IndyCar season,” said Hull.

“I’m excited to join DragonSpeed for the Rolex 24,” said Simpson. “The team has such a great pedigree, and I’m sure we’ll hit the ground running. Sports car racing has been a crucial component of my development as a driver and I’m glad to continue that with a winning team. It’s nice to be back with James for another race, and of course James, Eric, Elton and the rest of team all know what it takes to win at Daytona.”

Allen is no stranger to DragonSpeed, having competed with the team in the ELMS and WEC. His most recent success came in wining the P2 title in ELMS with Algarve Pro Racing.

“I’m delighted to continue with Kyffin as my teammate going into the Rolex 24 after our triumph in the ELMS this year, and it’s great to be back with DragonSpeed after our spell together in 2018-’19,” said Allen. “With Elton’s grasp of Daytona’s demands and Eric on board as well, all the pieces are in place to challenge for another win at the Rolex.”

New York native Lux has several LMP2 victories in the WeatherTech Championship, including the 2022 Rolex 24 victory with DragonSpeed (pictured, top).

“2024 will be my 14th Rolex 24, and my third Daytona outing with DragonSpeed,” noted Lux. “Elton always delivers a package capable of fighting for the win, and our racing partnership and friendship is stronger than ever. With Kyffin and James sharing the car, I’m confident we can challenge for the top step of the podium again. I can’t wait to get down to business with them and the team at the Roar and the race!”

The final member of the DragonSpeed lineup will be announced in early January ahead of the “Roar Before the 24” test weekend.
