NBA Draft Lottery: Warriors’ 2024 first round pick goes to Trail Blazers

Following the lottery, the Warriors 2024 first round selection will officially head to the Trail Blazers.

Despite holding a seat at the NBA draft lottery, the Golden State Warriors’ chances of keeping their 2024 first-round selection were slim.

With their 2024 first-round pick being only top-four protected, the Warriors’ pick was likely headed to the Portland Trail Blazers as part of a 2019 trade with the Memphis Grizzlies that included Andre Iguodala.

The Warriors had a less than 1% chance of landing in the top four and a 0.7% chance of becoming the first pick. Heading into Sunday, the Warriors had a 96.6% chance of ending up with the No. 14 selection in the first round of the 2024 draft.

Once the lottery was underway in Chicago on Sunday, the Warriors quickly landed that No. 14 selection. After their pick was revealed, the pick was conveyed to the Portland Trail Blazers, meaning the Warriors will not have a selection in the first round of the 2024 NBA draft.

While the Warriors had an unlikely chance of landing the top overall pick in the lottery, so did the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks had the 10th-best odds to get the No. 1 pick: 3%. Despite their slim odds, the Hawks won the lottery for the first time in franchise history and gained the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NBA draft.

Following the Hawks, the Washington Wizards, Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs and Detroit Pistons round out the top five in the draft.

The first round of the NBA draft is Friday, June 26 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The second round of the draft will take place on Saturday, June 27.

Brandin Podziemski represents Warriors at NBA draft lottery

The Warriors first round pick from the 2023 draft represented the team at the NBA draft lottery on Sunday.

When they didn’t secure a spot in the Western Conference playoffs, the Golden State Warriors earned a place at the NBA draft lottery. However, heading into the lottery on Sunday, the Warriors had slim chances of keeping their 2024 first-round selection.

For the Warriors to retain their pick, they needed to land in the top four of the lottery. If the Warriors’ pick didn’t end up in the top four, the pick would go to the Portland Trail Blazers as a part of a previous trade.

The Warriors pick had a 0.7% chance of returning to the Warriors in the top four.

To represent the Warriors and potentially provide some good luck in retaining the pick, Brandin Podziemski is representing Golden State on stage at the lottery in Chicago.

Other players from around the league are also representing their teams: Charlotte’s Brandon Miller, Detroit’s Ausar Thompson, Portland’s Scoot Henderson, Sacramento’s Keegan Murray and Toronto’s Scottie Barnes.

Don’t expect the NFL to use a draft lottery anytime soon

Other sports leagues use a draft lottery system, but don’t expect the NFL to follow suit

The NBA held its annual draft lottery on Tuesday night. It’s a rite of passage so firmly entrenched that the phrase “draft lottery” no longer raises an eyebrow.

The NHL also adopted a draft lottery, as has the WNBA and several other non-major sports. The weighted system discourages “tanking,” which is deliberately losing to get the worst record to guarantee getting the top pick.

The NFL has never followed suit. And even though the NBA draft lottery is a prime-time event that draws interest and ratings —two things the NFL almost never shies away from —there is little momentum for the draft lottery system to infiltrate football.

There are any number of reasons or excuses why the draft lottery system hasn’t hit the NFL. Among them (in no particular order):

  • Lesser impact of one individual player on a 53-man roster than in other sports.
  • The shorter schedule makes tanking more difficult to succeed (see: 2022 Houston Texans).
  • The variety of different positions needed across different teams greatly exceeds other sports.
  • The fairly robust trade market at the top of the draft; the No. 1 overall pick was traded just this year.

Of course, there are also rampant conspiracy theories about the NBA draft lottery dating back to the very first one in 1985. It was a little too convenient that the New York Knicks landed the top pick and the ability to select a transcendent star college player like Patrick Ewing. The same accusations of a fixed lottery have reared up several times, notably for the Cleveland Cavaliers winning the lottery and local superstar high schooler Lebron James.

Even now, with media members observing the process, there are still doubters about the veracity of the NBA lottery system. For a team like the Detroit Pistons, losing the lottery is a devastating blow–one the NFL desperately hopes to avoid.

The Pistons were the NBA’s worst team in 2022-23, going 17-65. The next-worst teams were the Rockets and Spurs, who each went 22-60. Despite being clearly the worst team for a variety of factors, including an injury to 2021 No. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham, Detroit won’t pick first. Or second, or even third. The Pistons “lost” the lottery and fell to the No. 5 overall pick.

The NFL, its owners and the broadcast partners simply don’t have the stomach for that. Don’t expect that appetite to change anytime soon.

LOL

OKC Thunder news: Clippers’ Play-In loss clinches 12th-best lottery odds for Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder now own the 12th-best lottery odds due to the LA Clippers’ season-ending loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Oklahoma City Thunder officially clinched the 12th-best lottery odds after the LA Clippers Play-In Tournament loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday.

The Clippers were without Paul George as he tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday morning. Brandon Ingram’s 30 points led the way for the Pelicans in a win that guarantees them the eighth seed and a First Round matchup with the top-seeded Phoenix Suns.

The Thunder now own the fourth-best and 12th-best lottery odds in the 2022 NBA Draft lottery, which will be held on May 17. The Thunder will find out where its two top 14 picks will land that night.

Warriors land No. 7 and No. 14 overall picks in 2021 NBA draft lottery

At the 2021 NBA draft lottery, the Golden State Warriors officially landed the No. 7 and No. 14 overall picks on the draft board.

It’s official; the Golden State Warriors will be on the clock with the No. 7 and No. 14 picks in the 2021 edition of the NBA Draft.

With Rick Welts representing the team at the NBA draft lottery on Tuesday night, the Warriors landed the No. 14 pick to open the lottery. Golden State sticking at No 14 shouldn’t come as a surprise. After finishing with the top record for eligible lottery teams, the Warriors had a 96.7% chance of receiving the No. 14 pick.

Via @warriors on Twitter:

After securing their pick at 14, Welts and the Warriors’ attention shifted towards the Minnesota Timberwolves. If the Timberwolves pick dropped outside the top three, the Warriors would receive their pick as a part of the blockbuster deal from the 2020 deadline that included Andrew Wiggins and DeAngelo Russell.

With the No. 7 pick on the board, NBA deputy commissioner and chief operating officer Mark Tatum pulled Golden State’s card for the second time in the lottery. Minnesota’s potential selection fell to No. 7, shifting the pick to Golden State. With the Warriors landing the No. 7 pick from Minnesota, the Wiggins and Russell deal is officially complete.

Following the end of the lottery, the Warriors will head into the 2020 NBA draft with the No. 7 and No. 14 overall picks on the board.

Everything at stake during the NBA draft lottery

This could be a huge draft lottery.

The NBA draft lottery is the first step in the process of ushering in the league’s new talent.

Not only is it the moment when teams learn where they’ll be picking, but it’s also the moment that the incoming rookie class knows where they’re likely to go and where they may want to target their landing spot.

But, even beyond that, this year there are a lot of implications from trades made in the past.

Teams that are slotted to pick high may lose their pick completely because of deals they made years ago. There’s a lot that can shift around and it can all happen pretty fast.

Here’s a quick explainer on what picks can change hands and what’s at stake for everyone in the draft lottery.

How will NBA draft lottery tiebreakers be decided?

See how the tiebreakers for the NBA draft lottery and general draft positioning will take place.

This season, there are six sets of teams that will need tiebreakers to finalize their draft position or their spot in the lottery.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are among teams who will have to wait to know exactly what odds they’ll have in the draft lottery. They are tied with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the fourth-worst record in the NBA.

Oklahoma City, Cleveland and the other teams who have a record that is equal to another team’s will have their draft or lottery spot determined by a coinflip, according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.

Givony tweeted that the coinflips will take place on May 25 early in the day.

As Bobby Marks tweeted, the Thunder and Cavaliers are tied for fourth-best odds and the Orlando Magic while the New Orleans Pelicans and Sacramento Kings are tied for eight.

The coin flip will determine where these teams land in the draft lottery.

Depending on play-in results, the Charlotte Hornets and San Antonio Spurs could end up tied for 11th. If they do not make the playoffs, their lottery fates will also be decided via coin flip.

The New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks are tied for the 19th pick, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers and Knicks are tied for the 21st pick and the Los Angeles Clippers and Denver Nuggets are tied for the 25th pick.

The coin flip will determine where these teams draft.

Oklahoma City won a tiebreaker last year, but that pick was conveyed to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Final NBA lottery odds: Magic pass Thunder on final day of season

The OKC Thunder’s win over the LA Clippers moved them back into a tie for fourth-best NBA draft lottery odds with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Oklahoma City Thunder needed one more loss to remain tied with the Orlando Magic for the third-best odds in the NBA draft lottery.

Instead, they took down the Los Angeles Clippers, who were short-handed after choosing to rest Kawhi Leonard and Paul George in an effort to get the fourth seed.

Oklahoma City slipped to the fourth-best odds, where the team is now tied with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Instead of a random drawing deciding whether the Thunder will select third or fourth, the drawing will decide whether they choose fourth or fifth.

Whether fourth or fifth, the Thunder will have a 47.1% chance of remaining in the top five. The key difference is there’s a 27.1% chance the team with the fourth-best odds ends up at pick six, while a 25.5% chance the team in fifth ends up with the No. 7 pick.

Here is the full NBA lottery order:

1. Houston Rockets

2. Detroit Pistons

3. Orlando Magic

T4. Cleveland Cavaliers

T4. Oklahoma City Thunder

6. Minnesota Timberwolves (top-3 protected; would convey to Golden State Warriors if 4 or worse)

7. Toronto Raptors

8. New Orleans Pelicans

T9. Sacramento Kings

T9. Chicago Bulls (Magic own this pick)

11. Charlotte Hornets*

12. San Antonio Spurs*

13. Indiana Pacers*

14. Memphis Grizzlies*

* Note:  The bottom four teams are in the play-in tournament and could change position.

Lottery watch: Cavaliers’ win on Wednesday gives Thunder breathing room

The Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Boston Celtics, pushing them a full game behind the OKC Thunder in the NBA draft lottery odds.

[mm-video type=video id=01f5kz9ya5ryrk296jr5 playlist_id=01eqbzhy8vfdk2ersm player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f5kz9ya5ryrk296jr5/01f5kz9ya5ryrk296jr5-d95e75369ec6aa10645fafbdfcd63ce1.jpg]

The Oklahoma City Thunder are in the middle of a tight race for the third-best odds in the NBA draft lottery.

During their day off on Wednesday, the Thunder gained a little bit of breathing room.

The Cleveland Cavaliers took down the Boston Celtics 102-94, putting them a full game behind the Thunder in the reverse standings.

This ended an 11-game Cleveland losing streak. It was their first win since April 21.

The Celtics have been in a tailspin, losing four games in a row, including two to the Miami Heat in a back-to-back that allowed Miami to jump out of play-in contention and stuck Boston in the seventh seed. Jaylen Brown’s injury devastated any hopes they had of finding their rhythm, and the loss to the Cavaliers was icing on the cake.

From the vantage point of the Cavaliers’ front office, this was not ideal. If they had lost, Cleveland would have been tied for third place with the Thunder once again; instead, they are now in fifth, half a game behind the Orlando Magic and a full game behind OKC.

The Thunder need to continue losing games, because even if the Cavs are now back a full game, the Magic are still right on their tail and have a chance to pull into a tie with OKC on Thursday.

Here is a quick rundown of the 2 through 6 spots:

  • 2. Detroit Pistons: 1.0 games over Thunder
  • 3. Oklahoma City Thunder
  • 4. Orlando Magic: 0.5 games behind Thunder
  • 5. Cleveland Cavaliers: 1.0 games behind Thunder
  • 6. Minnesota Timberwolves: 1.5 games behind Thunder

Oklahoma City will face the Utah Jazz on Friday and the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday to close out the season.

The Magic play the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday with a chance to move into a tie for third place with the Thunder. Orlando closes out the season with two games against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Detroit has a game against the Denver Nuggets on Friday and the Miami Heat on Sunday.
