Notre Dame opens six-game homestand with overtime loss to Georgetown

This one slipped away.

Notre Dame likely won’t have many more wins this season, so any close loss will feel like a missed opportunity. Beginning a six-game homestand against former Big East rival Georgetown, the Irish had a few opportunities for the game to end in their favor. Instead, it was the Hoyas celebrating a 72-68 victory in overtime.

A game in which both the Irish (4-6) and Hoyas (7-4) had earlier nine-point leads was tied at 60 in the final minute of the second half. [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] made a go-ahead layup with 8.7 seconds left, but that was enough time for Rowan Brumbaugh to make a basket with 1.2 seconds remaining.

Burton nearly made one of the most incredible buzzer beaters of all time from three-quarter court, but instead, free basketball was needed to decide this one:

An Ismael Massoud 3-pointer with 1:16 left put the Hoyas up, 70-68. Burton was fouled on the next possession but missed two free throws. The Irish made a defensive stop on the other end and called a timeout with nine seconds left to try and either tie or win the game.

Burton drove and dished out to [autotag]Kebba Njie[/autotag], whose game-winning 3-point attempt was blocked by Supreme Cook. [autotag]Braeden Shrewsberry[/autotag] was forced to foul Brumbaugh with 0.4 seconds on the clock, and Brumbaugh made two free throws to ice it for the Hoyas.

Drew Fielder came off the bench to lead the Hoyas with 16 points, most of which came on four 3-pointers. Brumbaugh scored 15 while making all six of his free throws, and Massoud had 13 points. Jay Heath and Dontrez Styles scored 10 points apiece

Burton was the game’s high scorer with 17 points despite making only six of 20 field-goal attempts. [autotag]J.R. Konieczny[/autotag] flirted with a double-double of 13 points and eight rebounds, and [autotag]Julian Roper II[/autotag] had a couple of highlight-reel moments while also scoring 13. Shrewsberry came off the bench to score 10.

Former UNC forward Dontrez Styles commits to Georgetown

Former UNC basketball player Dontrez Styles has committed to Georgetown over East Carolina, NC State and West Virginia.

Another former UNC basketball player has found a new home after entering the transfer portal.

Forward Dontrez Styles is the fourth former Tar Heel to find a new home as he made his decision on Sunday. Styles took to Twitter to announce that he has committed to Georgetown after spending two seasons at North Carolina.

Styles drew a lot of interest in the transfer portal, entering shortly after the Tar Heels missed out on the NCAA Tournament. He took visits to NC State, Georgetown, and East Carolina while also drawing interest from West Virginia as well in his new recruitment.

The forward was one of two transfer recruits that new head coach Ed Cooley landed on Sunday. Shortly after Styles committed, the program also landed former Illinois guard Jayden Epps.

In two seasons at North Carolina, Styles averaged 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. He saw limited action in his freshman year and that continued into 2022-23 when it was expected Styles would see an increase in playing time.

Dontrez Styles talks about why he left UNC ahead of new decision

Former UNC basketball forward Dontrez Styles talks about why he left the program ahead of his decision for a new team.

The UNC basketball program has a tough road this offseason; it needs to replace six players who entered the transfer portal.

Among those who left UNC by entering the portal was former four-star forward Dontrez Styles. After two seasons at North Carolina, Styles made the tough decision to leave the program and drew significant interest from teams right away.

Now, Styles is down to his final four programs. He plans to decide among Georgetown, NC State, East Carolina and South Carolina. Before he does that, he talked about leaving UNC and how hard it was for him.

Here is what Styles said on his weekly “Tuesdays with Trez” segment of “The Bryan Hanks Show” via Tar Heel Tribune:

“I want to play and get back to it,” Styles said. “It’s a great program. I enjoyed my time here but ready to move on to my next chapter. It was very sad because two years here, I’m used to it. When you’re used to something and it’s time for a change, it’s really sad.”

It’s hard to blame Styles for leaving. His playing time decreased from his freshman season to last year. Going into this past season, he was expected to take on a bigger role but only appeared in 15 games and played 5.9 minutes per game.

The hope is that Hubert Davis can learn from not playing his bench much last season. Otherwise UNC could see more roster turnover due to it.

Styles hopes to have a decision regarding his new school on Sunday.

Dontrez Styles to visit Georgetown, sets commitment date

Former UNC basketball forward Dontrez Styles is set to visit Georgetown this week and will make his decision next Sunday.

Former UNC basketball forward [autotag]Dontrez Styles[/autotag] appears ready to make a decision on where he will play next after transferring out of Chapel Hill following two seasons.

The former four-star recruit entered the portal a few days after UNC’s season ended and drew interest from several programs. He recently was on NC State’s campus for a visit and now he has another one lined up. Styles will visit Georgetown this week, the second visit in his recruitment thus far. And barring any changes, he will only take those two.

In addition to the visit, Styles also told On3 that he will be making a commitment on Sunday.

In two seasons at North Carolina, Styles averaged 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. He saw limited action in his freshman year and that conitnued into 2022-23 when it was expected Styles would see an increase in playing time.

The lack of playing time played a big factor in leaving North Carolina, a program he grew up rooting for.

The former four-star recruit should be a factor for whatever program he decides to pick in a week.

Dontrez Styles set to visit NC State in new recruitment

Former UNC basketball forward Dontrez Styles is set to visit NC State this weekend.

Since entering the transfer portal days ago, former UNC basketball forward Dontrez Styles has gained a lot of interest from teams. And now he’s ready to start taking visits.

Per multiple reports, Styles is one of two players in the transfer portal set to pay a visit to NC State over the weekend. The Wolfpack are showing interest in both Styles and Temple guard Damian Dunn, with both visiting the program.

Styles was recruited by NC State in high school before picking North Carolina. The Kinston native is among the best players in the transfer portal and is looking for a place he can come in and start right away.

In two seasons at North Carolina, Styles appeared in 45 total games averaging 1.8 points and 5.9 minutes per game. He had some moments for the Tar Heels including hitting a big three-pointer in overtime in the win over Baylor in the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

But for some reason, Styles didn’t get as much playing time as he thought he would and is now looking for a new opportunity.

As of Saturday, UNC has had five players enter the transfer portal.

LSU basketball has been in contact with guard transfer from North Carolina

The Tigers are already looking to improve the roster after a disappointing campaign.

After a disappointing debut season for coach [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] in which LSU finished just 2-16 in SEC play, it’s clear some changes need to be made.

That will almost certainly include some additions via the transfer portal, and one player that LSU has reportedly made contact with is former North Carolina guard [autotag]Dontrez Styles[/autotag].

According to On3, Styles — a 6-foot-6 player who spent two seasons with the Tar Heels — has heard from a number of programs including several in power conferences in addition to the Tigers.

Styles played in 30 games as a true freshman in 2021-22, averaging two points and 1.4 rebounds, but he only played in 15 games this season and saw his production dip even further.

Still, Styles was a four-star recruit and top 75 prospect in the 2021 recruiting class, and it’s not surprising that he’s seeing a lot of interest from programs in need of help like LSU’s.

Dontrez Styles discusses UNC future, decision to turn down NIT

UNC basketball forward Dontrez Styles talked about his future with the Tar Heels and the program turning down the NIT.

North Carolina sophomore Dontrez Styles was hoping to take a step forward in his second season in 2022-23. With the Tar Heels struggling and Hubert Davis not going to his bench as much as some would like, Styles never really took that big step.

And after missing the NCAA Tournament, UNC’s season is now done which will lead to decisions for players.

Styles’ will have a decision to make in the coming days — stay at North Carolina or enter the transfer portal. And so far, he hasn’t made up his mind.

The forward appeared on his weekly “Tuesdays with Trez” segment on “The Bryan Hanks Show” on WRNS 960 AM in Kinston. Among the topics discussed was his future:

“I’ve been trying to figure it out right now,” said Styles via Tar Heel Tribune. “I’ve been taking the time to get away and think about things.”

North Carolina has already lost two players to the portal with Tyler Nickel and Justin McKoy entering their names on Monday. At least one more is expected, and potentially more in the coming days.

For Styles, he just wants the opportunity to play. And with the team declining the NIT invite, that won’t happen until next year.

Styles revealed that the ultimate decision was Hubert Davis’ to skip the NIT this year.

“It was the coach’s decision,’ Styles said. “I think I would, just to have the opportunity to play. The NIT is not the Carolina standard but there are some great teams in there and it would have been some great competition for me to showcase my game again. I would have played.”

Styles is one of a few upcoming decisions UNC players will make.

UNC Basketball 2023-22 Snapshot Profile: No. 3 Dontrez Styles

Continuing the player previews for the upcoming season with sophomore wing Dontrez Styles.

The UNC basketball program hopes to see a jump from wing [autotag]Dontrez Styles[/autotag] in his second year in Chapel Hill.

The former four-star prospect played sparingly as a freshman but when he did, showed his athletic ability can be a real asset to this team. The 6-foot-6 wing has the ability to play and guard a few different positions for the Tar Heels.

Styles appeared in 30 games as a freshman, averaging 2.0 points and 1.4 rebounds per game in 5.8 minutes a game off of the bench. Styles best game of the season was in one of the biggest moments of the season for UNC. He had nine points, three rebounds and two steals in 25 minutes against Baylor in the Round of 32.

In year two, Styles is expected to play a significant role for the Tar Heels and look to build on the way he ended the 2021-22 season.

Depth Chart Overview

Styles will begin the season on the bench but should fall into that second or third guy in the bench rotation. Puff Johnson and Styles will play similar positions throughout the year, and with Puff’s emergence towards the end of last year, that may push Styles back a bit in terms of early minutes in games. Overall, Styles will consistently be the seventh or eighth man for the Tar Heels.

Preseason Bold Prediction

Styles is a key part to the expected success of the UNC program this season. His versatility will allow him to play a few different positions on the floor and allow him additional opportunities. I think because of that, he will see ample time on the floor and be an energy guy off of the bench. Though he won’t need to always score, his athleticism will allow him that chance. I think he scored in double figures in at least five games this year — after zero as a freshman.

Armando Bacot on Jalen Washington: ‘He has a chance to be really special’

UNC basketball big man Armando Bacot discussed the role and potential of freshman forward Jalen Washington this season at ACC Media Days.

With the college basketball season under four weeks away, a lot of preseason conversations are beginning. Whether it’s about expectations, incoming players or rotations, its a conversation every fan base and program is talking about. For the UNC basketball program, that is the case as well.

One of the questions for the Tar Heels is how deep this team can be and how deep it really will be. Last year, Hubert Davis kept it right around seven guys. This year, the expectation is that will grow in large part to the jump Dontrez Styles will make as well as the incoming freshmen.

One freshmen that has been a question mark so far this offseason is [autotag]Jalen Washington[/autotag]. A four-star forward, Washington has dealt with a few knee injuries in his high school career. Still working his way back from one during his senior season, there hasn’t been a lot of true ‘live action’ five-on-five play.

But, he’s started to participate more in that setting and fellow big man [autotag]Armando Bacot[/autotag] sees the potential.

“I think he has a chance to be really special,” Bacot said of Washington at ACC Media Days last week. “I really couldn’t see him being here for longer than maybe two, three years, just because how good he is. He’s got the measurables, he’s got the long arms, he can really shoot the ball. He can defend. He can score.”

Washington is a 6-foot-9 forward who was ranked the No. 48 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite rankings for the 2022 class.

Bacot, a preseason All-American by numerous outlets, went on to discuss what Washington’s role could be this year and if he’ll see a lot of minutes..

“Oh, definitely. I think he has the chance to be the sixth or seventh man. He’s really good.”

Last season, UNC didn’t have a lot of bodies in the front court, even for spot minutes for Bacot. Now, with the addition of Washington and the expected jump of Styles and extra depth with Justin McKoy, the UNC front court will once again have a lot of pieces.

Potential lineups options for UNC basketball this season

A look at some of the potential lineup options for UNC basketball and Hubert Davis with some added depth this season.

The UNC basketball program heads into 2022 as the No. 1 overall team in the country by numerous national projections. It is fresh off of a National Runner-up appearance and returns four starters – [autotag]RJ Davis[/autotag], [autotag]Caleb Love[/autotag], [autotag]Leaky Black[/autotag] and [autotag]Armando Bacot[/autotag] – and its two key bench members from last year – [autotag]Puff Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Dontrez Styles[/autotag].

The Tar Heels also add in a solid recruiting class and bring in Northwestern transfer [autotag]Pete Nance[/autotag] — looking to replace the role of Brady Manek.

Overall, North Carolina should be a deeper team this season and by all accounts Hubert Davis wants them to be. Whether it’s in the backcourt, wing or front court, there seems to be additional pieces that the roster didn’t have a season ago.

Here is a look at some of the potential lineups for UNC this season.
