Tennessee transfer Doneiko Slaughter commits to Arkansas

Arkansas defensive coordinator Travis Williams landed a commitment from a transfer defensive back with plenty of SEC experience.

[autotag]Arkansas football[/autotag] picked up their fourth transfer portal commitment on Friday in the form of defensive back [autotag]Doneiko Slaughter[/autotag]. The 6-0, 190-pound senior posted to Twitter (X) with his announcement on Friday afternoon.

Slaughter is a Tennessee transfer with one year of eligibility left after appearing in 43 games across four seasons with the Vols. During his time in Knoxville, Slaughter racked up 87 total tackles (66 solo), seven pass breakups, 3.0 sacks and an interception.

This past season, Slaughter was Tennessee’s seventh-leading tackler, posting 32 tackles (26 solo), a tackle for loss and a sack. His best performance came against then-No.1-ranked Georgia, where he recorded 11 tackles in a 38-10 loss to the Bulldogs.

Slaughter adds a veteran presence in the secondary with tons of experience playing in the SEC. While his statistical output may seem underwhelming, it’s invaluable having someone with that type of experience on the roster.

So far, Arkansas has only lost two defensive backs from last year’s team to the transfer portal – redshirt sophomore Jaylen Lewis and senior Malik Chavis. LaDarrius Bishop and Al Walcott no longer have eligibility remaining and Dwight McGlothern is not expected to return for a super senior season after accepting an invite to the East-West Shrine Bowl.

Willie Martinez discusses Doneiko Slaughter’s growth at cornerback

Tennessee defensive backs coach Willie Martinez discusses Doneiko Slaughter’s growth at cornerback.

Tennessee practiced for the eleventh time during fall training camp on Tuesday at Haslam Field.

Defensive backs coach Willie Martinez met with media following practice and discussed senior Doneiko Slaughter’s growth at cornerback.

“We’ve been very intentional of just leaving him at corner,” Martinez said. “He can play all of the other positions, but like a lot of guys, it’s really good to let him learn a position. It’s not easy playing out there on the corner, on the edge. Not only do you have to have the skillset, which he does, you have to have the amount of experience of being out there by yourself, the confidence that you need.

“You have to put days together, you have to put periods together into practice where you see some consistency. You can’t get down on yourself, and they’re priceless, the reps that he’s had this whole time in camp. He’s built a lot of confidence, you can see it in his playmaking. You see a lot more consistent playmaking, you’re seeing less mistakes, and it’s very beneficial.”

The 6-foot, 190-pound Slaughter has recorded 55 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, two sacks, one interception, seven pass deflections and one fumble recovery from 2020-22 at Tennessee.
