Dolphins worked out other punters before signing Sterling Hofrichter

They landed on the former seventh-round pick.

The Miami Dolphins are always looking to improve their roster, and while they’re currently in the midst of their first training camp under new head coach Mike McDaniel, that’s still the case.

Earlier in the week, the Dolphins waived undrafted rookie punter Tommy Heatherly and signed Sterling Hofrichter to take his place in the competition with 14-year veteran Thomas Morstead.

According to Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson, Hofrichter worked out for the team alongside two other punters – Dom Maggio and Matt Mengel.

Mengel recently spent time in the USFL, winning Special Teams Player of the Week at one point, as he has the ability to kick off, kick field goals and punt. During the season, he averaged 40.5 yards per attempt with over 45% of his punts being downed inside the 20-yard line.

Maggio was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Ravens in 2020, but he joined the Atlanta Falcons during the 2021 offseason. With the Falcons he actually competed with Hofrichter for the starting job, but both players ended up on injured reserve.

Maggio was eventually signed back to the practice squad in Atlanta in November when Morstead was their punter at the time.

Now, with Hofrichter on the roster, he’ll try to beat out Morstead and earn a spot on the 53-man, but he could also carve out a practice squad role.

Falcons waive punter Dom Maggio from injured reserve list

On Wednesday, the Falcons waived punter Dom Maggio from the injured reserve list.

The Falcons signed punter Dom Maggio over the offseason to provide competition for Sterling Hofrichter, and now three days from the start of the 2021 regular season, neither player is on the team’s active roster.

Both Maggio and Hofrichter were waived/injured but would return to Atlanta’s injured reserve list after clearing waivers. On Wednesday, the Falcons waived Maggio from the injured reserve list with a settlement, reports ESPN’s Michael Rothstein.

Hofrichter remains on the team’s injured reserve list and former Georgia punter Cameron Nizialek is set to start in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Falcons sign former Wake Forest punter Dom Maggio

The Atlanta Falcons signed former Wake Forrest punter Dom Maggio to a one-year deal, the team announced on Monday afternoon.

The Atlanta Falcons signed former Wake Forest punter Dom Maggio to a one-year deal, the team announced on Monday afternoon. Maggio, 22, was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Baltimore Ravens following the 2020 NFL draft.

The Falcons drafted punter Sterling Hofrichter in the seventh round of last year’s draft, but general manager Terry Fontenot said he was going to add talent to all positions.

Maggio averaged 43.7 yards per punt over his four seasons at Wake Forest.

Ravens waive DT Daylon Mack, P Dom Maggio

As the Baltimore Ravens trim down to the 80-man roster for training camp, they cut last year’s fifth-round draft pick DT Daylon Mack.

The Baltimore Ravens continued to work down to the 80-man roster limit for training camp, making two more cuts on Saturday. The Ravens announced they waived defensive tackle Daylon Mack and punter Dom Maggio via Twitter.

Baltimore waiting Maggio should come as no surprise as the Ravens have one of the best punters in the league in Sam Koch. While the team typically keeps an extra leg or two for training camp, the reduced roster size this year due to the coronavirus pandemic makes an extra punter a completely unnecessary luxury.

It’s Mack getting waived that could shock some. After being taken in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, it was expected Mack would at least be in the running for a spot on the 53-man roster, if not a rotational role, as he entered his second season. But with Baltimore selecting Justin Madubuike and Broderick Washington Jr. in the 2020 NFL Draft as well as re-signing Jihad Ward and Justin Ellis, as well as adding Calais Campbell and Derek Wolfe this offseason, Mack was simply the odd man out in a now very deep group.
