Big man DJ Wilson feeling comfortable with Nick Nurse, Sixers

New big man DJ Wilson is feeling comfortable with coach Nick Nurse and the Philadelphia 76ers.

CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers are in the middle of getting themselves right for the postseason. With nine games left in the regular season, the Sixers are looking to pick off a few wins while they await the return of Joel Embiid.

To add to their big man depth, the Sixers brought in DJ Wilson on March 24 on a 10-day deal. Considering it’s only a 10-day deal, Wilson has much to learn in a short amount of time, but he’s feeling comfortable rather quickly with his new team.

Of course, it helps that Wilson was with coach Nick Nurse briefly while with the Toronto Raptors.

“I feel comfortable,” Wilson said at practice on Thursday. “I think day after day just learning more of the offense, defense, scheme sets, and all that pays dividends, but I’ve been with Nurse before so I’m kind of familiar with the basics. So it’s just going from there and I got great vets, great guys in the locker room to help me out, great coaches and all that so I feel pretty comfortable.”

Those months with Nurse have allowed Wilson to ease into his new opportunity with the Sixers. He has understood everything Nurse and the Sixers want to do in Philadelphia.

“Definitely,” Wilson said of the comfort level with Nurse. “In terms of like offense, defense, sets, things that he’s comfortable with. So yeah, definitely those few months in Toronto definitely helped me out.”

Wilson, a former first-round pick in 2017, hasn’t played in the NBA since the 2021-22 season with the Raptors. He played four games in Toronto and did not play at all in the 2022-23 season.

While this is just a 10-day deal with the Sixers, Wilson is looking to take advantage of the opportunity in front of him and give himself a chance to stick in the NBA for a while.

“Make the most of it,” he finished. “Take every challenge, be ready when my number’s called. Stay ready, so I don’t have to get ready, and just be a great teammate, and help win.”

Sixers’ DJ Wilson draws praise from Nick Nurse for his play vs. Kings

Philadelphia 76ers big man DJ Wilson draws praise from coach Nick Nurse for his performance against the Sacramento Kings.

Not a lot went right for the Philadelphia 76ers in a 108-96 loss to the Sacramento Kings. Tyrese Maxey played well on the offensive end, but the rest of the roster could not give Maxey the help he needed.

Looking for a spark, coach Nick Nurse turned to DJ Wilson in the second half. The big man was signed to a 10-day contract and made his debut for the Sixers in the win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. In that game, he played two minutes of garbage time: Philadelphia had the contest wrapped up already.

On Monday, Wilson hopped off the bench and had 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting while knocking down two 3s and blocking two shots. It was a solid performance for the Sixers on a night there weren’t many positives.

“Yeah, he was excellent, right?” Nurse told reporters of Wilson. “He was excellent. He’s played a long stretch there and obviously, he played very well. I thought he did everything — just about everything right that he was supposed to do. He might have missed one one little bunny inside that he probably finishes that, he has about a perfect game, but he hit a couple of shots and and fought really hard. I thought he looked good.”

The Sixers will host the Clippers on Wednesday, and perhaps Wilson will make an impact in that one as well.

Report: Philadelphia 76ers to sign big man DJ Wilson to a 10-day deal

The Philadelphia 76ers reportedly plan to sign former first-round pick DJ Wilson to a 10-day deal.

The Philadelphia 76ers are adding depth at the big man spot as they await the return of Joel Embiid from his meniscus injury. The Sixers have relied on the combination of Paul Reed and Mo Bamba, but it doesn’t hurt to add another option.

The Sixers reportedly plan to sign former Milwaukee Bucks big man DJ Wilson to a 10-day deal. Wilson was a first-round pick of the Bucks in 2017 before he was traded to the Houston Rockets in the PJ Tucker deal in the 2020-21 season. He played four games for Nick Nurse with the Toronto Raptors in the 2021-22 season.

Wilson has spent the 2023-24 season playing for the Osceola Magic in the G League, where he is averaging 19.4 points and 9.5 rebounds.

In 146 career games, Wilson has averaged 4.4 points and 3.1 rebounds. It will be interesting to see how the Sixers utilize him.

Rockets agree to trade PJ Tucker to Bucks for DJ Wilson, DJ Augustin, draft assets

Houston is taking in Wilson, Augustin, and Milwaukee’s first-round pick in the 2021 draft, along with an exchange of 2022 and 2023 picks.

The Houston Rockets agreed to trade PJ Tucker and Rodions Kurucs to the Milwaukee Bucks for forward DJ Wilson, guard DJ Augustin, and a vast array of draft considerations over the next three seasons.

Tucker, a longtime defensive stalwart for the Rockets, is in the final year of his contract and recently requested a trade after he wasn’t able to come to terms with the team on his desired contract extension. The Bucks will also offer the 35-year-old a chance to compete for his first NBA title, which Tucker couldn’t realistically do in Houston following the departure of superstar guard James Harden in January.

Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, here’s what the Rockets are trading and receiving in exchange for a package headlined by Tucker:

Houston gets: DJ Augustin, DJ Wilson, Milwaukee’s lightly protected first-round draft pick in 2021, Milwaukee’s unprotected first-round draft pick in 2023

Milwaukee gets: PJ Tucker, Rodions Kurucs, Houston’s second-round draft pick in 2021, Milwaukee’s first-round draft pick in 2022 [which Houston had owned]

From a draft perspective, Houston is effectively bumping up its second-round pick in the 2021 draft to Milwaukee’s first-round position. The swap is protected if Milwaukee is in the top nine, but at 25-14, that is incredibly unlikely to happen — since the Bucks are currently No. 3 in the Eastern Conference, with over half the season already gone.

The Rockets are also swapping Milwaukee’s 2022 first-round pick for one in 2023, which is unprotected. With the Bucks led by two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo for the foreseeable future, general manager Rafael Stone likely wanted to push back that pick, since the delay allows more time for Milwaukee’s outlook to potentially worsen. There’s also the possibility that the 2023 draft might be stronger, since that could be the year that high schoolers are once again deemed draft-eligible.

As for the players Houston picked up, Augustin is a 33-year-old point guard who is under contract for approximately $7 million per year through the 2022-23 season. He’s averaging 6.1 points and 3.0 assists in 19.0 minutes per game this season, and at 38.0% on 3-pointers, he becomes Houston’s third-ranked shooter after Christian Wood and Sterling Brown. Augustin played college basketball at the University of Texas, which should make the transition to Houston an easy one for him.

While there isn’t a clear path to minutes for Augustin, since the Rockets have John Wall and Kevin Porter Jr. at point guard, Wall is currently out injured — and reports have indicated that he could undergo a knee scope later this season. That could provide Augustin with an opportunity.

The 5-foot-11 guard could also be traded again before the March 25 deadline, since the rebuilding Rockets (11-27) aren’t prioritizing veterans at the moment. However, since Augustin’s contract can’t be aggregated with others for 60 days following this deal, it would appear more likely for him to become a trade candidate in the offseason.

As for Wilson, he’s an athletic 6-foot-10 forward who is currently averaging 3.6 points and 2.1 rebounds in 8.8 minutes per game. A first-round pick in the 2017 draft, the 25-year-old is in his fourth NBA season and is likely to enter restricted free agency this offseason.

Since the Rockets don’t have much in the way of proven production behind Christian Wood at center, Wilson could get an opportunity late in the 2020-21 season to showcase his value after being buried on the Milwaukee bench for much of his tenure there.
