The early signing period has shaken things up for the best college basketball teams in the country.

After the top overall recruit DJ Wagner picked the Wildcats, Kentucky leapt over Duke for the top spot in the 2023 recruiting cycle’s rankings. Today, USC jumped into the top 10 by getting No. 1 point guard Isaiah Collier’s commitment. Kentucky passes Duke for top recruiting spot with DJ Wagner commitment

Big-time basketball news for the Kentucky Wildcats program.

The Kentucky Wildcats have secured the commitment of the No. 1 ranked basketball recruit in the class of 2023.

Camden (N.J.) combo guard DJ Wagner announced he’ll play for Kentucky in college.

Wagner (6-foot-3, 165 pounds) is the consensus top overall player at his position in New Jersey and the nation. He chose Kentucky over five other offers: Memphis, Louisville, Syracuse, Temple and Penn State. Wagner had connections with the Wildcats, including John Calipari coaching his father Dajuan back in the day at Memphis.

Asked about his decision, Wagner credited the Wildcats’ atmosphere, per On3.

“They’ve had some great teams come through there. The atmosphere is crazy there like they really love basketball… I went to Big Blue Madness, and it was crazy. It’s like Camden; it’s a basketball town out there. Their fans just love basketball.”

247 Sports’ Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein’s report on Wagner is that he’s a ferocious competitor, plus an aggressive and explosive scorer who can create his own shot anywhere on the court. Last season Wagner averaged 19.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 3.1 assists, leading his team to a state title.

Wagner joins an already-loaded class with the country’s third and fourth-ranked recruits. And his commitment boosts Kentucky enough to surpass the Duke Blue Devils in the 2023 recruiting rankings

The Wildcats are now No. 1.

How a Louisville hire could steer the fate of DJ Wagner, the top basketball recruit in his class

“It’s DJ’s decision.”

DJ Wagner, the top overall basketball recruit in the Class of 2023, has not yet committed to a college. But the tides could possibly change fairly soon.

Wagner, an incredibly talented 17-year-old guard from Camden High School in New Jersey, is the son of former NBA player Dajuan Wagner. After a dominant freshman year at Memphis, then coached by current Kentucky coach John Calipari, Dajuan was selected No. 6 overall in the 2002 NBA Draft.

Dajuan’s father, Milt Wagner, was also an NBA draft pick. Milt, a former Louisville standout, was chosen at No. 35 overall in the 1986 NBA Draft.

If and when he hears his name called in the NBA draft, DJ would actually become the first-ever third-generation NBA player. But first, he must decide where he will play basketball after he graduates from Camden High School in New Jersey — where both his father and grandfather played as well.

Although crystal ball predictions at 247Sports are currently split between Kentucky (led by Calipari, who coached Dajuan at Memphis) and Louisville, DJ’s eventual choice may have just become a bit more obvious.

According to Louisville’s official website, their men’s basketball program has now officially welcomed DJ’s grandfather Milt as their new director of player development.

For what it’s worth: That means that Milt will work in an administrative role, which is hired directly by the university, and not on the coaching staff.

Milt isn’t without qualifications. Not only does he have coaching experience, but during his playing days, he led Louisville to win a national championship in 1986. While he was in college, he also helped the team make it into three appearances in the Final Four.

Also on his roster: Kenny Payne, a first-round pick in the 1989 NBA Draft.

Payne, who was hired as an assistant coach at Oregon and then at Kentucky after his playing career, most recently worked for the New York Knicks. On March 18, Payne was hired to take over as Louisville’s head coach.

When asked, Milt typically dodges the question about DJ’s recruitment.

Last month, Dajuan was also asked about how Milt’s potential employment could eventually impact his son’s collegiate recruiting, and he said it would have a minimal effect (via WDRB):

“It’s D.J.’s decision … It shouldn’t take for Kenny [Payne] to get a job for my Dad to work for the university. He did a lot for that university.”

For what it’s worth, according to The Athletic’s Kyle Tucker, Kentucky “remains in great shape” to land DJ — and potentially even big man Aaron Bradshaw, a top-25 recruit who is teammates with DJ at Camden.

Even further complicating matters: DJ’s stepbrother, Kareem Watkins, is actually on Kentucky’s roster as well. So with ties to both universities, DJ will have a tough decision to make.

DJ is in the same recruiting class as Bronny James, and he will face off against James‘ on the Nike EYBL circuit this weekend.

WATCH: Top 2023 recruit DJ Wagner drops Bronny James with crossover

Top 2023 recruit DJ Wagner sent Bronny James to the floor with a crossover as Camden beat Sierra Canyon on Saturday.

Two of the top high school basketball programs in the country squared off in front of a national audience Saturday, as Camden (N.J.) knocked off Sierra Canyon (Calif.) by a final score of 66-62.

Camden’s matchup with Sierra Canyon featured a ton of star power, headlined by top class of 2023 recruit DJ Wagner. Wagner, the son of former NBA player DaJuan Wagner, has been the consensus top prospect in his class for a while now and is widely regarded as a player with the makings of a future NBA star.

He showed why in one play that has gone viral.

Wagner went to work on Bronny James with Camden leading 52-48 with 6:10 remaining in the fourth quarter. Wagner received a dribble handoff at the top of the key and isolated James before dropping him to the floor with a nasty crossover.

Camden led Sierra Canyon wire-to-wire, jumping out to a 15-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looking back. Camden’s defense smothered Sierra Canyon in the first, limiting the Blazers to 1-12 shooting from the field and eight turnovers.

Sierra Canyon eventually got back into the game thanks to the efforts of five-star UCLA commit and McDonald’s All-American Amari Bailey, but it was not enough to overtake Wagner and his Camden team. Wagner finished with a team-high 21 points on 8-15 shooting, while Bailey finished with a game-high 23 points.

Wagner doesn’t garner as much attention as some other players in his class who are very active on social media, but he has dominated throughout most of his junior season against a difficult national schedule. Wagner can do it all, though, and his handle sent James to the floor and shockwaves through a capacity crowd in Pennsylvania.
