DJ Vonnahme commits to Hawkeyes as PWO tight end

Iowa’s storied walk-on tradition rolls on with a commitment from in-state athlete DJ Vonnahme out of Kuemper Catholic.

The Iowa Hawkeyes just added another name to the list of its vaunted walk-on tradition.

DJ Vonnahme, out of Kuemper Catholic in Carroll, Iowa, announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes as a preferred walk-on.

Like Graham Eben before him, Vonnahme had an offer from FBS program Colorado State. He also held offers from South Dakota, South Dakota State, and Northern Iowa.

Instead, Vonnahme took advantage of the opportunity to join the black and gold. The 6-foot-4, 205 pound athlete plays both quarterback and safety at Kuemper Catholic, but he committed to the Hawkeyes as a tight end.

The in-state prospect is no doubt familiar with Iowa’s history with both walk-ons and tight ends. Per 247Sports, Vonnahme is rated as a two-star commit, the nation’s No. 258 athlete and as the No. 17 player from Iowa in the 2024 class.

He joins a group of tight ends in the 2024 class that also features Gavin Hoffman of Blue Valley Northwest in Overland Park, Kan., and Michael Burt of Creighton Prep in Omaha, Neb.

Alongside Eben, Vonnahme also joins in-state, preferred walk-on commit Trent Cakerice of Grundy Center High School.

Here’s a look at Vonnahme’s junior season Hudl tape with Kuemper Catholic.
