USC cracks the Top 10 for 5-star 2024 quarterback D.J. Lagway

This could be USC’s second QB of the Big Ten era, after Malachi Nelson.

The USC Trojans made the initial top 10 list of schools for Texas native D.J. Lagway. The five-star 2024 Willis (TX) quarterback made USC a contender joined by Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Lagway  is rated the No. 30 overall prospect and the No. 5 signal caller in the class, according to the 247Sports Composite. He is the No. 44 overall prospect and the No. 6 quarterback in the 247Sports rankings.

In three games this season he has thrown for 575 passing yards and 8 TDs to just three interceptions. Lagway has drawn comparisons to former Alabama and Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts. He has also run for 190 yards and two more scores.

He’s an electric athlete with a live arm but still needs refinement as a pure passer. He has some Kellen Mond to his game, as well as components of the previously mentioned Jalen Hurts as a physical runner.

Lagway threw for 1,579 yards and 17 TDs with just two interceptions last season. He also rushed for 715 yards and six more scores on the ground.

Fun facts about D.J.: Lagway’s father Derek played running back at Baylor in the late 1990s. D.J. is also an all-district baseball player as an outfielder.

5-star Texas QB talks recruitment, why Clemson is among his top schools

Clemson’s top quarterback target in the class of 2024 dropped his top 10 schools this past Sunday via social media. Willis (Texas) five-star DJ Lagway is down to Clemson, Arkansas, LSU, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, Southern Cal, Alabama …

Clemson’s top quarterback target in the class of 2024 dropped his top 10 schools this past Sunday via social media.

Willis (Texas) five-star DJ Lagway is down to Clemson, Arkansas, LSU, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, Southern Cal, Alabama and Baylor.

Lagway (6-2, 225) is ranked as the No. 5 quarterback in the country and the No. 30 overall prospect in the 2024 class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Clemson got Lagway on campus for a pair of unofficial visit(s) in April and June. He earned an offer based on the relationship he’s built with Clemson’s coaching staff and what he displayed when Brandon Streeter stopped by Willis High School to watch him throw in person during the live evaluation period.

“I chose those top 10 schools because those are the schools that’ve been most interested in me and have been texting me and talking to me the most during this whole Sept. 1 process,” Lagway told The Clemson Insider in a phone interview Tuesday night. “I feel like those schools I have the best relationships with so far and I’m just excited to keep building relationships with those schools.”

It didn’t come as a surprise when Lagway included Dabo Swinney’s program as a part of his top schools. He went into detail on what sets Clemson apart from the rest and why the Tigers are ultimately one of his top choices at the moment,

“I’d say because of the atmosphere — the Christian-based atmosphere,” Lagway explained. “It’s just amazing. It’s different than any other school. I feel like that’s the reason why it sets Clemson apart.”

Lagway heard from Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter pretty immediately once the calendar rolled over to Sept. 1.

“I hear from them every single day,” he said. “I feel like the communication is great between me and them. I feel like our relationship will continue to grow.”

Lagway said that the messaging from Clemson hasn’t changed. According to Lagway, the Tigers have let him know that he’s their guy at quarterback in the class of 2024 and they’re excited to keep building this relationship with him.

Lagway hasn’t had the chance to set a game day visit to Clemson quite yet. He said that he and his family are still looking into buying plane tickets, so once they get that settled, he will “most definitely” be at a game.

“I just want to see how the environment is,” Lagway said.

While Lagway hasn’t set anything up for this coming Friday, he indicated that his game day visits have been a week-to-week thing for him and his family. Though, he’s already made visits to both Florida and Texas A&M.

As far as his decision timeline is concerned, Lagway will like to have a college decision rendered prior to his senior season. Not only will he be a mid-year enrollee, but he wants to be able to help recruit his class at whatever institution he ultimately decides to commit to.

With that being said, what are some of the more important factors that Lagway is looking for in a school at the next level?

“Really just the family-atmosphere, you know what I mean?” he said. “Somewhere that I’m loved even if I’m playing good or playing bad. Somewhere that cares for me. Somewhere that I can develop; that’s a huge thing for me, developing into a better quarterback.”

LSU makes top-10 for 2024 five-star quarterback from Texas

DJ Lagway has made his first cuts.

[autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag] is a 2024, five-star, 6-foot-2, 225-pound quarterback from Willis, Texas, where he plays for Willis High School. The Wildkats are off to a touch 1-3 start to the 2022 season, but Lagway is trying to turn the season around.

Lagway started all 12 games as a sophomore last season, throwing for 1,579 yards, 17 touchdowns and two interceptions as he led the Wildcats to a 6-6 record and an appearance in the second round of the playoffs.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the LSU Tigers made the list of the final ten schools that Lagway is considering committing to. Lagway is a three-sport athlete (football, basketball, baseball) and wants to play baseball at the next level as well.

LSU made the list with Arkansas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, USC, Clemson, Baylor, and Alabama. If he wants to play baseball at the next level as well, get [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] on the phone. What better place to go than LSU?

Gators make top 10 for 2024 priority quarterback target DJ Lagway

The Gators have made 2024 five-star quarterback DJ Lagway’s top 10, but they’ll need to beat out plenty of Power Five powerhouses to earn his commitment.

The Florida Gators made the first cut for elite 2024 quarterback target [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag] on Sunday.

Lagway named UF to his top 10 along with Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and USC. The in-state Aggies have hosted him 10 times already, but he’s coming off his third visit to the Swamp and is high on the Gators, according to Swamp247.

“Definitely high,” Lagway said of his interest in playing for Florida. “They are definitely one of my favorite schools. I really like them. I would say I like them just because of the coaches. They are strict and hardworking type of coaches, but they are also great people. I am excited to see how they do this season. They have a family atmosphere and everyone is always around you and just very loving and they want to make it feel like your home away from home.”

Lagway’s plan is to be decided by next summer, so official visits are likely to come in spring. Texas A&M is considered a lock to get one, but Clemson and USC are the other two schools he’s mentioned openly. Billy Napier’s recruiting army will do whatever they can to get Florida one of those official visits, and they appear to be on the right track.

A five-star quarterback on the 247Sports composite, Lagway is ranked No. 30 overall and No. 5 among quarterbacks in the class.

Alabama lands in top 10 for 5-star 2024 QB DJ Lagway

On Sunday, 2023 dual-threat QB DJ Lagway listed Alabama in his top ten. He received an offer from Alabama back in January.

In recent years, Alabama has seen a lot of success in the quarterback position. Nick Saban and the rest of the coaching staff are successful on the recruiting trail in terms of landing some of the nation’s best quarterbacks. On Sunday, 2024 deal-threat quarterback DJ Lagway listed his top-10 schools via his Twitter account. Alabama was one of the programs that were listed.

Lagway plays baseball and football for Willis High School in Willis, Texas. As it stands, Lagway hopes to play both sports in college. The two-sport athlete has made two trips to Tuscaloosa so far. His first visit to Tuscaloosa was for Junior Day and the other was an unofficial visit.

In the past, Alabama has been able to land dual-threat quarterbacks from the Lonestar state. The coaching staff was able to land both Jalen Hurts and Jalen Milroe from Texas. It will certainly be interesting to see if the Tide can steer one of the state’s top prospects away from other powerhouse programs across the country.

Roll Tide Wire will now take a look at DJ Lagway’s recruiting profile.

Clemson in top group for one of nation’s top-ranked QBs

One of the nation’s top-ranked quarterbacks dropped his final 10 schools on Sunday afternoon via social media.

Clemson’s top quarterback target in the class of 2024 — Willis (Texas) five-star D.J. Lagway — is down to Clemson, Arkansas, LSU, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, Southern Cal, Alabama and Baylor.

Lagway (6-2, 225 is ranked as the No. 5 quarterback in the country and the No. 30 overall prospect in the 2024 class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Lagway announced an offer from Clemson on May 31 after a conversation with coach Dabo Swinney. He found himself back on campus that next week and is aiming to return for a game day visit to Memorial Stadium this fall, which would enable him to further build his relationship with Swinney and Brandon Streeter.

“I have a real good relationship with those two coaches,” Lagway told The Clemson Insider back in July. “I talk to Coach Streeter a lot, at least once a week. I try to get on the phone every couple of weeks with Coach Swinney. I talk to them a good amount. I have good conversations with them. We have a good relationship and I’m excited to keep building on it.”

While Lagway is Clemson’s top target, the conversations have shifted away from football and have focused more on life, family and the human aspect of things.

“That’s a huge factor,” Lagway said. “Outside of football, you’ll be around these people for like three-to-four years at a time, so you got to be able to be comfortable on and off the field with them.”

Is there anything about Clemson and its recruiting philosophy that’s stood out to Lagway?

“Really just the family atmosphere is different than all the other schools,” he explained. “That kind of vibe — the Christian-based atmosphere — that makes Clemson stand out from the rest.”

Friday Night Notes: Ohio State laying future foundation, top ’24 CB visits LSU and more

This past week Ohio State extended three offers to potential future recruits, including one of the top receivers in the class of 2024.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school football recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

This week we begin with Ohio State, which has become a wide receiver factory for the NFL in recent years. The class of 2022 produced Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave, who were selected No. 10 and No. 11, respectively, in the draft. They join a stacked group of former Buckeyes in the pros, including Michael Thomas, Parris Campbell, Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel, among others.

Ohio State had an eye on continuing that dominance at WR this week, extending offers to two potential 2024 recruits, including one of the top wide receivers in the class.

(247Sports)

Christian Brothers College (Mo.) WR Jeremiah McClellan

One offer went to McClellan (6-foot-1, 185 pounds), a four-star receiver ranked No. 29 at his position and the fifth-best overall recruit in the state of Missouri. The Buckeyes are hardly the only team that’s interested. He has offers from 23 other schools, including from Big Ten rivals like Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan State.

Duncanville (Texas) OLB Colin Simmons

An even bigger fish the Buckeyes would like to get a commitment from is Simmons, a five-star edge defender who’s listed at 6-foot-3, 225 pounds. He’s ranked as the No. 2 EDGE prospect in the country and is No. 16 overall. Simmons has 43 offers on the table so far – including one from home-state Texas, but LSU is currently the favorite…

Top Aggies 2024 target QB DJ Lagway is set to attend the week 3 matchup with Miami

Top Aggies 2024 target QB DJ Lagway is set to attend the week 3 matchup with Miami

As Head coach Jimbo Fisher and the 24th ranked Aggies prepare for their week 3 matchup with the 13th ranked Miami Hurricanes, one of the more underreported stories going into the weekend is the recruiting visitor list that has been building for quite some time now, with a high number of 2023 and 2024 priority prospects set to attend the primetime kickoff.

According to leading recruiting site On3, top 2024 duel-threat quarterback DJ Lagway, who recently visited College Station on Sept. 3rd while attending Texas A&M’s season-opening win against Sam Houston State, is set to visit and attend the Miami game. Currently, without a quarterback in the 2023 or 2024 class, Jimbo Fisher & Co. know that preparing for the future at the postion is vital, as the current QB depth chart may be the deepest the program has had in years, but due to the popularity of the transfer portal, departures could easily occur sooner than later.

Overall, Lagway is a 4-Star recruit, the 31st ranked player and the 5th ranked quarterback in the class, as well as the 3rd, ranked player in Texas, and is presently predicted towards the Aggies at 67.0% in accordance with On3 consensus rankings

5-star QB amazed by first game day experience in the Swamp

Five-star quarterback DJ Lagway enjoyed his first game day in Gainesville and has the Gators high on his list.

Saturday wasn’t five-star quarterback [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag]’s first trip to the Swamp, but it was his first time seeing Ben Hill Griffin Stadium filled with over 90,000 fans. That experience was a “dream come true,” for the childhood Gators fan, according to 247Sports, and he left town with a lot of respect for the program despite the loss.

“The atmosphere was so amazing,” Lagway said. “I am so excited to see where this program heads… The crowd was energetic and how the fans were showing me love. It felt amazing. I felt like I was at home, so I am excited to come back to another game.”

This was the third visit Lagway has made to UF since picking up an offer earlier this year. He’s planning on making official visits in the spring, but he could return before that. Clemson and USC are two other schools high on his list, but he holds offers from several high-profile Power Five programs.

Lagway’s recruiting timeline lines up with the eventual departure of [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] at Florida. The Gators haven’t shied away from making comparisons to the team’s current starters, and early playing time in the SEC is enticing to any five-star quarterback looking to prove himself.

There’s still plenty of time before Lagway makes a decision, but Florida is trending in the right direction early. The 247Sports composite ranks Lagway No. 30 overall in the class of 2024 and No. 5 among quarterbacks.

Tigers making an early impression on 5-star 2024 quarterback

Five-star Texas passer DJ Lagway listed LSU as one of four early favorites.

LSU could be about to land its quarterback commit in the 2023 cycle, as four-star quarterback [autotag]Ricky Collins[/autotag] — a Baton Rouge native — recently decommitted from Purdue.

However, the Tigers are already making some moves with an elite signal-caller for the following cycle. Five-star Willis, Texas quarterback [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag] is ranked as the No. 17 overall prospect and No. 3 quarterback in 2024 on the 247Sports Composite, and he told On3 that LSU is one of four schools standing out for him so far.

The Tigers join Florida, Texas A&M and USC on that list.

“I like how they do recruiting,” Lagway said of the Tigers, per On3’s Chad Simmons. “They have really good recruiters, who show a lot of genuine love. I feel like (quarterbacks) Coach (Joe) Sloan is heading in the right direction with the offense. I’m just excited to see what they do this year; it’s going to be fun to watch them, too.”

Lagway isn’t close to making a decision. Coaches aren’t even allowed to directly contact 2024 prospects until Sept. 1, and he said that he intends to make game-day trips to a number of schools during the 2022 season. He said he hopes to cut his list down by mid-season and plans on making a decision during the spring of 2023.

The Aggies are the early favorite, holding a 72.1% chance of landing him according to the On3 RPM. But LSU will hope to change things by getting Lagway on campus this fall.
