Digital investigators caught the Pentagon leaker with a Steam account

The FBI arrested a 21-year-old suspect in the Pentagon Discord leak, and investigators used Steam and a kitchen counter to do it

The FBI arrested a 21-year-old suspect in the Pentagon Discord leak, using Steam and a kitchen counter to do it. The New York Times said National Guard IT specialist Jack Teixeira was arrested on April 13, 2023, for allegedly leaking sensitive military documents, including some pertaining to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The documents were contained on Discord until March 2023, when the FBI was made aware of the leaks after some appeared on a Minecraft server. It was a team of New York Times investigators who identified Teixeira as the alleged culprit.

“A breakthrough in our investigation came when the team identified a Steam profile in Airman Teixeira’s name that led to an Instagram profile with photos of the exact location where leaked docs were photographed — a kitchen countertop in his childhood home,” New York Times visual investigator Christiaan Triebert said on Twitter.

The New York Times says Teixeira ran a Discord server called Thug Shaker Central, where he reportedly discussed “guns, racist memes, and video games” with its 20-30 members. An unnamed member of that server told The Washington Post that Teixeira began sharing classified information in 2022 in an attempt to educate Thug Shaker members about the U.S. government’s actions. Teixeira may have shared hundreds of documents in the server, all while playing games.

“He’s a smart person,” the member said. “He knew what he was doing when he posted these documents, of course. These weren’t accidental leaks of any kind.”

Another member told The New York Times that Teixeira wasn’t a whistleblower motivated by a sense of moral outrage, but that he wanted to show them “what war really is.” Teixeira is currently detained, pending a hearing on April 19, 2023, where he faces two counts of violating the espionage act.

Discord voice chat is coming to Xbox consoles

Access is already available for select Xbox insiders, with the public rollout arriving soon.

These days, Discord is available on practically every device with an internet connection — there’s no ignoring it. As such, yet another line of consoles will support the massive gaming platform.

On Wednesday, Microsoft announced that Discord integration is coming to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. People using either console will soon be able to join voice channels, see what friends are playing, and chat with players on PC or mobile. This cross-platform functionality is something Xbox fans have wanted for quite some time. It’s much more robust than the older feature set that only allowed people to see Xbox Live Gamertags on Discord.

Select Xbox Insiders can try Discord starting July 20, 2022. If you are one of the lucky few that gain access, make sure to connect both of your accounts. It’s pretty straightforward, but there’s an entire walkthrough of how to connect your Xbox and Discord accounts together here. If you’ve already done that, you will have to link both together again.

While there isn’t a launch date for the public rollout, Microsoft claims it’s coming soon. That tends to be the case with this sort of software implementation. Get enthusiasts to test it, then push out the whole shebang once all the kinks are ironed out.

Both Discord and Spotify are down

Both platforms are suffering from temporary outages.

If you can’t use Spotify or Discord right now, don’t worry, most of us can’t since both services are down.

Both Spotify and Discord announced the platforms are experiencing outages on Tuesday morning. There are no details yet as to what’s causing these disruptions, but both companies are aware something is up.

“We’re aware of an issue causing message failures and are working on a fix,” Discord said on Twitter. “Apologies for the disruption [and] thx for hanging tight!”

Spotify posted a similar statement.

“Something’s not quite right, and we’re looking into it. Thanks for your reports,” reads Spotify’s statement on Twitter.

It’s a massive annoyance for those who use Spotify and Discord daily, especially the latter for work purposes. Yet there’s not much anyone can do right now. Downdector, a service that monitors the connectivity status of online platforms, is listing issues on Amazon Web Services, WhatsApp, Facebook, and many others.

GLHF will update this story as updates come in.

Discord is finally heading to PlayStation

Both PS4 and PS5 owners can link Discord accounts.

At long last, Discord is finally coming to PlayStation consoles.

PlayStation owners will be able to link their PSN and Discord accounts as of Monday. Doing so will grant the option to display game activity across platforms. Meaning friends on Discord’s PC or mobile clients will be able to tell you’re playing Uncharted: Legacy of ThievesHorizon Forbidden West, or the cult-classic pinnacle of interactive storytelling that is Knack. Any game on either  PS4  or  PS5, really.

The only other feature PlayStation owners gain from this is the ability to display their PSN IDs in your Discord connections tab. Nothing is all that remarkable in terms of features, but Discord says more functionality is coming.

How to link your PSN and Discord accounts:

  • Open Discord
  • Head to User Settings
  • Select “Connections”
  • Select the PlayStation icon
  • Enter your PSN sign-in info into the authorization field

Presto! That’s it. Now everybody will know you spent eight hours trying to beat the Orphan of Kos in Bloodborne.

Discord integration is something PlayStation fans have wanted for ages, though the news might be lost in the excitement over  Sony buying Bungie. That’s understandable since, well, picking up the studio that created Halo  and Destiny  is kind of a huge deal.
