Former New Mexico State DL Dion Wilson Jr. will reportedly visit Texas A&M

Texas A&M will reportedly host former New Mexico State defensive lineman Dion Wilson Jr. in early January.

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has continued to field offer after offer this month, already landing seven players through the transfer portal, but still needs to fill depth spots at multiple positions, including on the defensive line.

The feeling is reportedly mutual after offering former New Mexico State defensive lineman Dion Wilson Jr. last week. According to Syracuse writer Mike McAllister, Wilson is set to visit College Station on January 6-7 in combination with scheduled visits to Rutgers and Syracuse.

After New Mexico State head coach Jerry Kill announced that he would not return to the program in 2024, a bevy of players have entered the portal, including cornerback Adrien Seldon, who also plans to visit Texas A&M sooner than later.

In 14 games during the 2023 season, Wilson recorded 31 tackles (18 solo tackles), 2.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks. Standing at 6’5″ and 300 pounds, Wilson’s 2022 season with Arizona was very similar, accumulating 19 tackles (7 solo tackles), one tackle for loss, one sack, and one pass deflection during his sophomore season.

With both Walter Nolen (transferred to Ole Miss) and Isaiah Raikes leaving the program, gaining a versatile run-stopper with pass-rush potential is sorely needed to pair with incoming sophomore defensive linemen David Hicks and Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy in 2024.

Texas A&M offers former New Mexico State DL from the transfer portal

Texas A&M has fielded an offer to former New Mexico State defensive lineman Dion Wilson Jr. from the transfer portal.

New Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has continued to utilize the transfer portal throughout the month of December, landing seven players, including former Kansas State cornerback Will Lee Jr., who is a plug and player going into the 2024 season.

While nearly every position on defense has been addressed, the defensive tackle spot has seen vast attrition due to multiple entries into the transfer portal: Veteran McKinnley Jackson has declared for the 2024 NFL Draft, while Walter Nolen, who has transferred to Ole Miss, and nose tackle Isaiah Raikes, who entered the portal, have also departed.

On Monday, it was revealed that the Aggies had offered former Arizona and New Mexico State defensive lineman Dion Wilson Jr., who spent the 2023 season with the NMS Aggies, appearing in 14 games under then-head coach Jerry Kill.

In said 14 games, Wilson recorded 31 tackles (18 solo tackles), 2.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks on the year. Standing at 6’5″ and 300 pounds, Wilson’s 2022 season with Arizona was very similar, accumulating 19 tackles (7 solo tackles), one tackle for loss, one sack, and one pass deflection during his sophomore season.

With one year of collegiate eligibility remaining, it would be wise for Wilson to consider visiting College Station sooner, looking like a perfect fit in Elko and new defensive coordinator Jay Bateman’s system.

New defensive line coach [autotag]Jeremy Garrett[/autotag] has set his sights on former Arizona Wildcat defensive lineman [autotag]Dion Wilson Jr.[/autotag] as someone who can help. He entered the transfer portal on Dec. 9 after spending the past three seasons at Arizona.

Wilson, originally a three-star recruit, redshirted in 2020 and has been a rotation player for the past two seasons. He appeared in 10 games this past season, making 19 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack and one pass defended.

The 6-foot-6, 295-pounder has two seasons of eligibility remaining and already has several other offers since entering the portal but Auburn is his first Power Five offer.

Auburn will have to replace the production of Colby Wooden, Marquis Burks, Morris Joseph Jr., Zykeivous Walker, Marquis Robinson who are either heading to the NFL, in the portal or out of eligibility.

Bringing in several transfers is a must for Auburn’s coaching staff and an experienced player like Wilson would be a good start.
