Sixers 3 goals: Dewayne Dedmon has to provide toughness, leadership

New Philadelphia 76ers big man Dewayne Dedmon has to give the team some toughness and some leadership off the bench.

The Philadelphia 76ers made their move in the buyout market when they brought in veteran big man Dewayne Dedmon for the rest of the season. Dedmon is in his 10th season in the league out of USC, and at 33 years old, will look to help the Sixers get it done in the playoffs.

Dedmon played 30 games for the Miami Heat in the 2022-23 season before he was sent to the San Antonio Spurs in a deal before being waived and then joining the Sixers. He averaged 5.7 points and 3.6 rebounds for the Heat before the deal.

In order for Dedmon to make an impact for the Sixers over these final 25 games before the playoffs begin, there are three things he must provide for this team:

James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers react to the addition of Dewayne Dedmon to their roster.

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers made their move in the buyout market when they brought in veteran Dewayne Dedmon after he was waived by the San Antonio Spurs. Dedmon spent the first half of the season with the Miami Heat before being traded to San Antonio and then waived.

Dedmon did not play in Wednesday’s 118-112 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, but he made an impact on the bench with his communication. That will be useful come playoff time because he has a lot of experience under his belt.

“Just another vet that brings toughness,” James Harden said. “He can do a little bit of everything, so he’s gonna be needed in the playoffs.”

Dedmon played with PJ Tucker on the Heat in the 2021-22 season.

“It’s gonna be good,” Tyrese Maxey said. “He’s got length. He’s got experience, playoff experience. He’s another communicator. I think him and PJ were talking about how they talk on defense. He was a good energy guy on the bench and he didn’t play tonight. He’s new, but he was good for us and he talked a lot and it’s gonna be great.”

Doc Rivers reacts to addition of big man Dewayne Dedmon for Sixers

Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers reacts to the team adding veteran Dewayne Dedmon to the team’s rotation.

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers made their move in the buyout market when they added veteran Dewayne Dedmon to their mix of backup centers behind Joel Embiid.

Dedmon, who is 33 years old and in his 10th season out of USC, is looking to provide a defensive presence and some size to a Sixers team that will really need it on some nights. Standing at 7 feet tall, he provides a bigger option than either Montrezl Harrell or Paul Reed.

Coach Doc Rivers is happy with the addition of Dedmon and what he can bring to Philadelphia.

“He knows how to play, a vet, a great talker on defense,” Rivers said. “I like all the things he can bring us.”

Don’t expect Harrell and Reed to be pushed out of the rotation, however.

“We’ll add three to the mix,” Rivers said. “That’s basically what we’ll do.”

Dedmon’s size gives Rivers some relief, especially when considering the fact the Sixers will face some taller teams in the playoffs, such as the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“On nights where — and it’s not a lot of nights, honestly, where size hurts us — but there are some, he’ll be a good use for us,” the coach stated.

Along with his defensive presence, Dedmon can knock down the 3-ball. He has shot 33.5% for his career, which is solid for a backup big man albeit on only 1.1 attempts per night.

“Yeah, he works on it and he’s done it,” Rivers finished. “I don’t think that’s what we’re looking for, honestly, but the fact that he can do that is an added bonus for sure.”

Dewayne Dedmon reacts to joining Sixers, discusses time with Heat

New addition Dewayne Dedmon reacts to joining the Philadelphia 76ers as well as his time with the Miami Heat.

CAMDEN, N.J.–The Philadelphia 76ers made their move in the buyout market by bringing in veteran Dewayne Dedmon on a deal for the rest of the season. The 33-year-old played 30 games to begin the 2022-23 season with the Miami Heat and he averaged 5.7 points and 3.6 rebounds and he shot 29.7% from deep on 1.2 attempts per game.

As he joins the Sixers now, he is expected to provide much-needed size as he stands at 7 feet tall. That will be a big help for Philadelphia as they have been relying on smaller options like Montrezl Harrell and Paul Reed to back up Joel Embiid.

Dedmon also has a history in Philadelphia playing 11 games for the Sixers in the 2013-14 season during The Process era. On Wednesday morning, Dedmon gave his reaction to joining the Sixers as well as why his numbers were down a bit with the Heat.

Get to know new Philadelphia 76ers addition Dewayne Dedmon following his addition on the buyout market.

The Philadelphia 76ers made a move at the deadline by sending out Matisse Thybulle in order to get below the luxury tax line and free up some space to make some additions to their roster. They made a move on the buyout market on Monday morning to bolster their bench.

They reportedly added veteran big man Dewayne Dedmon and signed him for the rest of the season in order to add some size to their bench unit. He stands at 7 feet tall and he brings that aspect to the backup center spot after turning to smaller players such as Montrezl Harrell and Paul Reed.

On the season, Dedmon is averaging 5.7 points and 3.6 rebounds for the Miami Heat before he was sent to the San Antonio Spurs and then bought out.

Get to know Dedmon and what he can bring to the Sixers when he does step on the floor for his new team:

Report: Sixers sign big man Dewayne Dedmon for rest of the season

The Philadelphia 76ers will sign big man Dewayne Dedmon for the rest of the 2022-23 season.

The Philadelphia 76ers promised to be active on the buyout market after the Matisse Thybulle deal, and they are delivering.

The Sixers are signing Dewayne Dedmon to back up Joel Embiid for the rest of the season. The 33-year-old veteran out of USC played 30 games for the Miami Heat in the 2022-23 season, averaging 5.7 points and 3.6 rebounds while shooting 49.6% from the floor before being moved to the San Antonio Spurs and then bought out. He stands 7 feet tall and brings much-needed size to Philadelphia’s bench unit.

Dedmon has ties to the Sixers. He played 11 games for them in the 2013-14 season, when he was trying to figure out his career. Since then, he has proven a serviceable backup big man. With his signing, Philadelphia addresses its size issue.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Montrezl Harrell and Paul Reed for the rest of the season with the addition of Dedmon. Both can contribute, so coach Doc Rivers will have to make some decisions.

4 backup big men Sixers should take a look at on the buyout market

Here are four backup big man options the Philadelphia 76ers should take a look at on the buyout market.

The Philadelphia 76ers made their move at the deadline when they moved Matisse Thybulle to the Portland Trail Blazers in a four-team deal that netted them Jalen McDaniels from the Charlotte Hornets in a deal that also brought Philadelphia below the luxury tax line.

The move gives the Sixers another able perimeter defender, but it also doesn’t fix their issue of a backup center.

At the moment, Philadelphia is relying on their duo of Montrezl Harrell and Paul Reed who are both serviceable, but they aren’t necessarily solutions. Harrell is very good on the offensive end and he brings a ton of energy, but he struggles rebounding and defending against bigger centers while Reed is a solid defender, but he fouls a ton and doesn’t offer much in the way of offense.

Therefore, it’s time for the Sixers to turn to the buyout market, which president Daryl Morey says they’ll be active in. There are four possible options for Philadelphia and they are:

Dewayne Dedmon childishly threw a massage gun on the court after arguing with Erik Spoelstra

This was presumably Dedmon’s last game with Miami.

This has not been an ideal season for Miami Heat big man Dewayne Dedmon, and it got even worse on Tuesday night.

The NBA veteran, who is averaging a career-low 11.7 minutes per game, was seen arguing with Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra on the sideline. Although it was not immediately clear what the heated discussion was about, he was not very effective on the previous defensive possession.

Immediately after the interaction with Spoelstra, the center stormed off and slapped something off the bench that made its way onto the court in the midst of a Miami offensive possession.

Players on both teams were visibly confused by the flying object:

If you missed it the first time, be sure to look on the left side of the screen.

Dedmon, obviously, was given a technical foul for his childish behavior and subsequently ejected from the game. This could have been very costly for the Heat, who were short-handed with available players during the match.

Spoelstra, who was also involved in a skirmish on the bench with Jimmy Butler last season, described what happened as just a “regular Tuesday night” for the Heat. Miami defeated Oklahoma City, 112-111, shooting 40-for-40 on free throws.

This was presumably the last game with the franchise for Dedmon, who also had an unfortunate blunder during a recent loss against the Lakers as well. He will become trade eligible on Jan. 15.

Orlando Robinson, who has played very well lately and made his first career start during the Heat’s victory over the Thunder, is widely expected to take Dedmon’s minutes as Bam Adebayo’s backup.

Every player in Philadelphia 76ers history who has worn No. 30

Here is a list of all 19 players who have worn the No. 30 uniform in the history of the Philadelphia 76ers.

It’s summertime in the NBA, so it’s time to learn some history. The Philadelphia 76ers are one of the older franchises in the NBA. Their history dates to the 1949-50 season.

With that longevity, the team has had hundreds of players come through the City of Brotherly Love. Sixers Wire looks at the No. 30, which has been worn by 19 of those players in the history of the franchise.

This running series will go through all of the uniform numbers worn in franchise history. The previous edition of this series was a list compiling the 15 players who have worn the No. 31.

Here is the list of those 19 players who have worn No. 30 in Sixers history:

Report: Rockets monitoring free agents Dewayne Dedmon, Ersan Ilyasova

Either Dedmon or Ilyasova could potentially take the roster and rotation spot of veteran center DeMarcus Cousins, who is leaving Houston.

Veteran NBA big men Dewayne Dedmon and Ersan Ilyasova are potentially of interest to the Houston Rockets once DeMarcus Cousins is eventually traded or released, per Kelly Iko of The Athletic. Both players are currently free agents and eligible to sign with any team.

“The Rockets will continue to keep an eye on the free-agent market, with names like Dewayne Dedmon and Ersan Ilyasova being of interest,” Iko wrote Saturday. No deal appears to be imminent, and the Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan Feigen reports that Cousins is likely to play at least one more game for the Rockets before his departure.

A 7-foot-0 center, Dedmon had his best NBA years in Atlanta, averaging 10.2 points (49.9% FG) and 7.7 rebounds in 24.9 minutes per game. In three seasons with the Hawks from 2017-18 until 2019-20, Dedmon also improved as a range shooter, going 35.8% on 3-pointers. Now 31 years old, he has yet to play with any team in the 2020-21 season.

Meanwhile, the 6-foot-9 İlyasova averaged 6.7 points (45.1% FG) and 4.6 rebounds in 17.1 minutes with the Milwaukee Bucks over the last two seasons. Now 33 years old, he’s also viewed as a “stretch big,” with a career shooting clip of 36.5% on 3-pointers over his 11 NBA seasons.

Both İlyasova and Dedmon are more mobile than Cousins, which would seem to fit with where head coach Stephen Silas wants the Rockets to go on the defensive end of the floor. Either veteran could slide in as the backup to usual starting center Christian Wood, who hopes to return from his sprained right ankle within the next two weeks.
