Colts’ Devin Funchess (shoulder) won’t play vs. Titans

Colts have until Dec. 4 to make a decision.

The Indianapolis Colts (6-5) are still waiting to see if wide receiver Devin Funchess will be healthy enough to return this season, but they won’t get their answer before they host the Tennessee Titans (6-5) in Week 13.

While they still have one more week before making a decision on Funchess, the Colts will be cutting it close. Head coach Frank Reich told reporters Wednesday that Funchess won’t be activated from the injured reserve list this week.

“He is not going to make it this week. Not because of anything we have learned the last couple days, but we’ll get something checked out later in the week. It’s all going fine. We’ve had no setbacks. There’s been nothing negative,” Reich said. “It’s just the reality is where we’ve got to be and what we need to see this week he won’t make it on Sunday, but hopefully sooner rather than later.”

What’s important to note is that Reich confirmed there haven’t been any setbacks, which means it’s simply taking a long time for the bone to heal.

Funchess has been on the injured reserve list since breaking his clavicle during the Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. He stayed on the injured reserve for eight weeks before being eligible to return to practice. The Colts then get 21 days from that point to either move him to the active roster or keep him on the injured reserve, which would effectively end his 2019 season. That decision comes on Dec. 4.

The Colts wide receiver corps has been lacking for the majority of the season with spurts of brilliance. While Funchess isn’t a game-breaking talent, his experience and skills would help the Colts offense in theory.

With Hilton getting healthier and the potential return of rookie Parris Campbell in the next two weeks or so, having Funchess activated for the deadline could bring a boost to what has been a poor passing offense.

We will have to wait and see, though, as the Colts have until the middle of next week to make their crucial decision on the impending free agent.

Colts still monitoring WR Devin Funchess (shoulder)

The Devin Funchess return is still waiting.

The Indianapolis Colts are hoping to see the return of wide receiver Devin Funchess at some point this season but are still monitoring his progress from the broken clavicle he suffered in Week 1.

With Funchess currently on the injured reserve list, the Colts will have to make a corresponding move to open up a roster spot. However, they aren’t at that point yet as they have to monitor his status this week.

Head coach Frank Reich said in a conference call Monday that they have to wait until Funchess is fully ready to go before activating him.

“We are going to monitor him as we go. We’ve already talked about his injury a bunch, I mean we have to make sure that thing is 100 percent healed,” Reich said. “So we will monitor this week and see how it goes.”

The Colts have until Dec. 4 to activate Funchess or keep him on the injured reserve list for the remainder of the season.

The Colts desperately need playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. They just lost tight end Eric Ebron for the rest of the season due to a pair of ankle procedures. Running back Marlon Mack is out indefinitely with a hand fracture, and wide receiver Parris Campbell is also working his way back from a hand fracture.

Funchess signed a one-year deal with the Colts this offseason and caught three passes for 32 yards in the only game he’s played this season.

The Colts passing offense hasn’t eclipsed 200 yards since Week 7 and some of that has been due to a lack of consistent playmakers.

Getting Funchess back is a big move for the Colts, but it remains to be seen if that will happen anytime soon.

Colts’ Devin Funchess still waiting on collarbone to heal

Devin Funchess is still waiting to recover.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Devin Funchess has missed the majority of the season after suffering a collarbone injury in Week 1 and is still trying to work his way back.

Though Funchess is eligible to return Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he isn’t expected to do so. In fact, Funchess is still waiting on his collarbone to heal in order to take the next step in getting back on the field.

“I have to talk to the trainers. My bone still has to heal,” Funchess told reporters Thursday. “So I’m not trying to go back out there and try to rebreak it because we have a nice little stretch coming up.”

Funchess broke his collarbone in the Week 1 opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. After jumping for a pass in the end zone during the fourth quarter, the 25-year-old came down hard on his shoulder. He was quickly moved to the injured reserve list.

As he works his way back into the fold, Funchess has been doing all he can to help his fellow receivers in any way.

“I’ve been trying since I got hurt and it’s not a good process. You can’t control a bone. It is healing when it wants to heal,” Funchess said. “Just seeing them, I just try to coach them up and try to let them know little small things out there – what the DBs are going to do and all that stuff. All I can do is give them my knowledge.”

Funchess did return to practice in a limited fashion this week but because he hasn’t been activated, there won’t be any sign of him on the injury report.

The Colts are currently without three of their top wide receivers due to injury, which means they need Funchess to return quickly. But he can only recover as fast as the bone will let him, and it remains to be seen how far along he is.
