Devin Bush posts highest PFF grade for Seahawks in Preseason Week 1

Here are the best and worst performers on both sides of the ball this week according to PFF.

A lot may be riding on how Devin Bush performs for the Seattle Seahawks early on during the 2023 season. With Jordyn Brooks still on the PUP list with an ACL injury, odds are Bush will wind up starting next to Bobby Wagner at inside linebacker when Week 1 comes around.

Seattle got good news from its first preseason game of the year on this score, as Bush balled out in the Seahawks’ 24-13 win over the Vikings on Thursday night. On film Bush was stout against the run and it seems the analysts at Pro Football Focus agree. Bush posted the highest overall grade on the team this week, aided by a high mark in run defense.

Here are the best and worst performers on both sides of the ball this week according to PFF, plus some special teams grades to boot.

The Seattle Seahawks held another training camp practice yesterday, two days removed from their first preseason game of the year, a 24-13 victory over the non-division rival Minnesota Vikings.

Devin Bush claims Seahawks are the powerhouse in the NFC West

The NFC West might be up for grabs, but I believe the entire conference could not be more wide open than it is right now.

The Seattle Seahawks opened the 2023 preseason with a boom, defeating the Minnesota Vikings 24-13 in the exhibition matchup. Although it is quite literally the earliest part of the NFL season, this is not stopping some from seeing lofty expectations for this team.

After the game, linebacker Devin Bush was rather bullish on what he sees as the potential for the Seahawks. Although it might be early, I love the confidence in the players.

Although I would not necessarily agree the Seahawks are the powerhouse in the division – San Francisco is the hill to climb here – I get where Bush is coming from. The NFC West might be up for grabs, but I believe the entire conference could not be more wide open than it is right now.

Bush had a strong performance on Thursday night. He was second on the team with six total tackles, including one for a loss.

Studs and duds for the Seahawks from Preseason Week 1

While it was only a preseason contest, fans should consider it a legit win all around.

The Seahawks beat the Vikings 24-13 at home last night in their first game of the 2023 season. While it was only a preseason contest that doesn’t count in the standings, fans should consider it a legit win all around, as Seattle can celebrate the performances of several young contributors on their roster.

8 things we learned from the Seahawks’ first unofficial depth chart of 2023

While it’s unofficial, it’s still illuminating.

The Seattle Seahawks have released their first unofficial depth chart of the 2023 season ahead of Thursday night’s preseason debut against the Minnesota Vikings.

While it’s only an unofficial depth chart, it’s still illuminating regarding their plans. Here are eight things we learned from Seattle’s first depth chart of the year.

Seahawks linebacker group gets surprisingly high ranking from PFF

We’d feel a lot better about this group if either Cody Barton or Tanner Muse had been re-signed for depth.

Rankings season continues here at Seahawks Wire and just about everywhere else during this quietest of times on the NFL calendar. Pro Football Focus is going through their annual rankings of each position group for all 32 teams. Today, Dalton Wasserman did their linebacker unit rankings and he apparently thinks pretty highly of Seattle’s group.

The Seahawks came in at No. 7 on his list, naturally boosted by the return of the game’s greatest off-ball linebacker, Bobby Wagner. The rest of the group is up for debate, though.

“Seattle’s questions lie with the rest of the group. Mainstay Jordyn Brooks is a tackling machine and run defender, but his struggles in coverage have kept his overall grades below 60.0 in each of his first three seasons. He’s durable and tough but may not be a long-term top-end player in the middle. Free agent acquisition Devin Bush faces similar questions as a former first-round pick who has never found his footing. If either were to have a breakout season, they could combine with Wagner to form an elite group. It just seems unlikely, given their track records.”

Unlikely is putting it kindly. While Bush will only be 25 when next season begins, he’s undersized and has consistently earned poor grades from PFF since he was drafted. The same is true for Brooks, who’s recovering from a late-season ACL tear.

We’d feel a lot better about this group if either Cody Barton or Tanner Muse had been re-signed for depth. Safe to say we are not as confident as PFF is on this one. Bobby is only one man afterall and the rest are pretty far from K.J. Wright and Bruce Irvin in their prime.

Devin Bush on getting to play with Bobby Wagner: ‘It’s a dream come true’

Seattle Seahawks’ newest linebacker Devin Bush is looking forward to the chance to play with All-Pro veteran Bobby Wagner this season.

The Seattle Seahawks added a new linebacker to their corps this spring via free agency, signing Devin Bush to the roster.

Bush was originally drafted by the Steelers in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft and spent the last four seasons with the team. While Bush found some success in Pittsburgh, he certainly didn’t realize his full potential.

He spoke to the Seattle media via Zoom about what it means to be given a new opportunity with the Seahawks.

“I know that they liked me coming out in 2019,” Bush told reporters. “I got on the phone with Coach (Pete) Carroll a couple of times, we talked, and we spoke frequently. Ultimately when I got out there in Seattle, I felt like I was around a bunch of good guys. Coach Carroll is obviously defensive minded and I’m a defensive player, so that’s a good match.

“I just felt like they were all about competition.”

Plus, Bush will get a chance to play with All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner, who signed back with the Seahawks after just one year with the Rams.

“I’m super excited,” Bush said. “Me and my dad were actually talking about it when I signed with Seattle. Bobby was still out there in free agency, and we were just playing around, saying it was a possibility. Once it happened, it was kind of like a dream come true.

“I can say that he’s a potential Hall of Famer and to be able to play alongside of him, I can’t ask for a better situation than that.”

2023 NFL draft: Wisconsin OLB Nick Herbig visits Seahawks

The Seahawks continue to be linked with linebackers in the draft.

There is a bit of a theme brewing for the Seattle Seahawks in the weeks leading up to the draft, and it involves the linebacker position. Seattle did their best to improve their linebacking corps during free agency by signing Devin Bush and bringing Bobby Wagner back into the fold, but they’re clearly focusing on continuing to add.

The Seahawks continue to be linked with linebackers in the draft. They recently met with Florida linebacker Ventrell Miller, and USA TODAY’s Draft Wire also mocked Arkansas’ Drew Sanders to Seattle as well.

Now the Seahawks are meeting with another linebacker: Wisconsin’s Nick Herbig. This is a player who can potentially fill one of two needs as either an off the ball linebacker or perhaps depth for the pass rush in a 3-4 defense.

During his three years with the Badgers, Herbig recorded 21 sacks with 11 coming last year. His NFL draft profile raves about his athleticism, but does mention he is lacking some weight and strength to impact the pass rush this year. However, he could perhaps make an impact elsewhere.

“He would benefit from a year in the weight room to get ready for NFL edge work, but he might have the instincts and athletic ability for consideration as an off-ball linebacker.”
