Auburn basketball loses one member as Devan Cambridge enter the transfer portal

Devan Cambridge joins his brother in the transfer portal.

On Thursday, Auburn wing Devan Cambridge announced that he was entering the transfer portal. Interestingly enough, Devan’s brother, Desmond Cambridge also entered the portal on Wednesday. Desmond spent two seasons at Brown and two seasons at Nevada. It is likely that the two will eye playing together one last season.

On the other hand, Devan spent three seasons with the Tigers. His role for Auburn predominantly resulted in him coming off the bench. However, he does have some starting experience. In 2020, Cambridge was a starter on the Plains. He averaged 8.9 points per game while shooting 37.6% from the floor. This past season head coach Bruce Pearl brought the Nashville native off the bench. He would average 4.2 points per game and shot 42.6% from the floor. Although he only averaged a total of 6.0 points per game over his three seasons, he should be a hot commodity in the portal.

His athleticism and ability to make some miraculous dunks should give him the opportunity to earn a starting role elsewhere. The presence that Cambridge brought off the bench was more important than some Tigers fans would think. Standing at 6’5, his length and versatility will be missed. It is also worth noting that Allen Flanigan, Jabari Smith, and Walker Kessler will all likely at least enter their name into the NBA Draft. Considering the possibility that all four will be leaving, the Tigers would be left with 9 scholarship players. The threshold is 13 for Division 1 college basketball programs.

The two brothers will likely pair up elsewhere. Per 247Sports reporter Travis Branham, Cambridge plans on teaming up with his brother at a new school. At this time, there has been no speculation as to where the two may land. However, I would be surprised if the two aren’t playing in the same jersey by the start of the ’22-’23 season. Auburn will likely look to replace Cambridge through the portal. If not, they may look for Flanigan to return. We will have to wait and see.

Key Players in Auburn’s Unprecedented Success

Reviewing the top player’s performances for Auburn during their run to the regular-season crown.

The Auburn basketball team has had several good years of hoops over the years.

The 2018-19 team made a run to the final four. The following year the Tigers made an appearance in the elite eight. It is pretty remarkable to see how much head coach Bruce Pearl has changed the atmosphere in hoops over the years on the Plains.

His success comes with the ability to recruit some of the best players in the country. By doing so, he has made the Auburn basketball program more notable as of late.

This season, the Tigers will be the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament and could potentially carry that seeding over to the NCAA Tournament if their success continues. Several players have been instrumental to the Tigers’ success this season, and I find it necessary to point out some of the key contributors for the Tigers this season.

Instant Analysis: Walker Kessler has triple-double, Auburn crushes Texas A&M

It is Walker Kessler’s world.

After suffering just their second loss of the season, Auburn responded with an emphatic 75-58 win over Texas A&M.

Walker Kessler took over the game for Auburn, finishing with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 blocks for his second career triple-double.

Despite a slow start offensively Auburn’s defense ensured they were able to pick up a comfortable win In front of a 20th consecutive sold-out Auburn Arena after hosting College GameDay.

Auburn is now 23-2 overall and 11-1 in SEC play. The victory was just Auburn’s second over Texas A&M in their last seven meeting at Auburn Arena.

Here are some immediate takeaways from Auburn’s big win over Texas A&M.

Takeaways from Auburn basketball’s 55-54 win over Missouri

This one felt like theft.

There was a robbery on a freezing Tuesday night in Columbia, Missouri.

The No. 1 Auburn Tigers (19-1, 8-0 SEC) escaped Mizzou Arena with a 55-54 win over the Missouri Tigers (8-11, 2-5 SEC). Auburn didn’t deserve to win the game after such a poor showing, but KD Johnson, the Hamburgler himself, came up with a pair of clutch baskets late to get the Tigers over the hump.

This was one of those games that made me feel like I couldn’t take a deep breath. Every time the pace started to increase, there was a foul or a stoppage in play. Missouri executed its game plan to perfection. Play physical, grind it out and shut down Jabari Smith. Unfortunately, it was just barely not enough.

Here are five takeaways from Auburn’s extremely close win over Missouri.

Takeaways from Auburn’s 80-71 win over Ole Miss

Auburn’s resiliency showed yet again in a road win over Ole Miss.

Word of the day: resiliency. “The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.”

That is Auburn basketball.

On Saturday night, the Tigers picked up a nine-point win against an Ole Miss team that did everything they could to try and come away with a victory. Unfortunately, the shots that the Rebels were knocking down at a blistering pace in the first half did not fall in the second.

Auburn (16-1, 5-0 SEC) finished the game shooting an even 50% from the floor themselves, led by big man Walker Kessler, who finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 blocks.

Could we see Bruce Pearl & Co. ranked No. 1 in next week’s AP Poll? We’ll have to wait and see.

Here are five takeaways from No. 4 Auburn’s 80-71 win over the Ole Miss Rebels.

Takeaways from Auburn basketball’s 70-44 win over North Alabama

Auburn’s defense carried the way tonight vs UNA.

Auburn managed to avoid catastrophe after a slow start against North Alabama on Tuesday night.

The No. 13 Tigers (9-1) were only up 32-27 at the halftime break but used a 25-2 run in the second half to propel themselves to a 70-44 win.

Offensively, the game was not entertaining to watch. Auburn went scoreless for the last four minutes and thirty-five seconds of the contest, whereas North Alabama had various scoring droughts during their worst offensive output of the season. Defensively, however, Auburn put on a clinic. North Alabama shot just 29% from the floor (their lowest total of the season), and every player that stepped onto the court finished with a negative plus-minus. The last time Auburn held a team to 45 points or less was the 77-41 win over Troy last season.

Here are five takeaways from Auburn’s 26 point win over the Lions.

Five takeaways from Auburn basketball’s 68-54 win over Southern Indiana

We love this team already.

I’m already in love with this team.

Auburn didn’t shoot the basketball well, they were sloppy throughout the entire game, and were down 9-0 early in the contest. I still love them.

The Tigers defeated Southern Indiana 68-54 in their exhibition game on Friday night. Devan Cambridge lead Auburn with 13 points on 4 of 7 shooting. Isaiah Swope of USI led all scorers with 15 points, knocking down a trio of threes.

Overall, as to be expected, the Tigers were sloppy, but this keep in mind this was an exhibition game. AU’s Final Four squad lost their exhibition game.

Here are five takeaways from Auburns win over USI.

Commentary and thoughts on what was Auburn vs Florida

Our writer Shea Brennaman has some thoughts and commentary on the game that was Auburn vs. Florida.

I react to the first half of Auburn vs Florida live here so that you all don’t have to.

*Halftime reflection: the first two minutes of this was fun, but it was all downhill from there.

First five minutes:

Sharife is out with an ankle injury but the Tigers showed promise early with a triple by Jamal Johnson. Mike White didn’t like what he saw with his Gator offense early so he called a timeout and then it all went downhill from there.

The theme:

We’ll turn the ball over anywhere and everywhere, even on inbounds plays.

Drama: BRUCE GOT A BENCH WARNING AND CAUGHT AN ATTITUDE WITH THE REF, LOVE THE PASSION COACH!

15:00-7:00

We haven’t scored in a really long time. Turnovers are leading to huge momentum getters for the Gators. Turning the ball over and getting dunked on/seeing an alley-oop slam is absolutely demoralizing to watch. Transition threes continue not to fall for Auburn, but they’re falling for Florida.

Tigers trail by 12, I’m beginning to question why I thought this would be a good idea. I’m also eating Flaming Hot Cheetos so that’s another decision I will regret later.

In other news baseball won 18-2.

Walk-on Lior Berman is now in the game, commentators are talking about Trendon Watford.

Ten turnovers now, 7:48 left in the first half. We are now on pace to finish with 40 turnovers. Down 27-10, time to play that Maroon 5 song about being in misery.

Final five minutes:

Florida has eight fouls compared to Auburn’s three…maybe we can get them in foul trouble. At this point I just want the boys to get it within 10 by halftime, is that too much to ask?

Non-related: The Lil’ Sweet Dr. Pepper commercials really freak me out and I miss Larry Culpepper. I also miss Sharife.

I blinked and we’re down 36-18, Auburn also just committed its 12th turnover. Tigers also picked up two fouls very recently. Sharife Cooper looks miserable on the sidelines right now and again, I miss him tremendously.

Scottie Lewis has 13 points now, Trey Mann has 16, Auburn has 20.

Watching the final seconds run off the clock is like waiting for the sweet release of death.

Okay, it’s now halftime and Auburn is losing 44-22. I’m going to give myself a mental break and eat some spaghetti.

(Editor’s Note: I told her it was for the best she just eat spaghetti the rest of the night. Yum! Spaghetti!)
