Detroit Red Wings at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Detroit Red Wings at Philadelphia Flyers odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Detroit Red Wings (28-25-9) conclude a 2-game weekend road trip Sunday against the Philadelphia Flyers (23-28-11) at Wells Fargo Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. (NHL Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Red Wings vs. Flyers odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Red Wings were knocked around 4-1 by the New York Islanders in a matinee game Saturday. Magnus Hellberg was filling in for the injured Ville Husso, and he coughed up 4 goals on 36 shots in the setback. Only Dylan Larkin, who recently signed a lucrative extension, was able to light the lamp.

The Flyers have been off since Wednesday night when they fell to the New York Rangers 3-2 in OT, so Philly is well rested. Perhaps that will do it some good, as Philadelphia is just 1-6-2 in the last 9 games overall.

The Flyers beat the Red Wings 2-1 in Detroit on Jan. 21. Their final regular-season meeting is on March 25 in Philadelphia.

Red Wings at Flyers projected goalies

Alex Nedeljkovic (2-4-2, 4.09 GAA, .880 SV%) vs. Carter Hart (16-19-10, 2.94 GAA, .907 SV%, 1 SO)

Nedeljkovic was recalled from Grand Rapids of the AHL on an emergency basis with Husso sidelined, and the team having a back-to-back situation. He hasn’t started in the NHL since coughing up 5 goals on 41 shots in Florida back on Dec. 8.

Hart allowed 3 goals on 25 shots in the OTL against the Rangers Wednesday. He hasn’t won in 6 starts since Feb. 9. However, he has received just 14 total goals of offensive support in his previous 8 outings, too.

Red Wings at Flyers picks and predictions

Prediction

Flyers 3, Red Wings 2

Moneyline

The FLYERS (-120) catch the Red Wings (+100) in a tough spot, starting the 2nd end of a back-to-back set with a goaltender who hasn’t been in the NHL in nearly 3 calendar months.

Philadelphia has been super shaky lately, so go lightly on this wager. Still, the Fly Guys have won 14 of the previous 16 meetings at Wells Fargo Center, and 16 of the last 23 in this series. The home team is also 26-10 in the last 36, so the trends definitely point to a Philly win.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Red Wings +1.5 (-270) will cost you more than 2 1/2 times your potential wager if you need insurance and don’t want to play Detroit straight up. That’s a little too risky, and there is just no value there. If you like the Red Wings for some reason, just bet them straight up.

PASS.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-135) is a little on the expensive side, and with 2 shaky goaltenders in Ned and Hart, it comes with risk.

However, Philly has been terrible offensively over the past month, and it has given Hart nothing but heart failure in terms of offensive support. Ned is a wild-card, as he could come into this one with something to prove in this opportunity.

The Detroit Red Wings (20-21-6) travel to meet the Philadelphia Flyers (15-22-8) Wednesday at Wells Fargo Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Red Wings vs. Flyers odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Red Wings fell 5-3 against the Los Angeles Kings at Little Caesars Arena prior to the All-Star break. Detroit has won just two of its last seven games and it hasn’t won in regulation in eight games since a 4-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres Jan. 15.

After a franchise-worst 13-game losing skid, the Flyers picked up back-to-back wins over the Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets Jan. 29-Feb. 1 prior to the All-Star break.

Red Wings at Flyers projected goalies

Alex Nedeljkovic (13-13-5, 2.90 GAA, .911 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Carter Hart (9-14-5, 2.80 GAA, .915 SV%, 1 SO)

Nedeljkovic has won just one of his last six starts dating back to Jan. 17, and he has allowed 3 or more goals in five of those outings. He has posted a 4-7-2 record, 2.79 GAA and .917 SV% on the road this season.

Hart has picked up consecutive victories for the first time since winning back-to-back games Dec. 10-14 at Vegas and home to New Jersey. He is 6-8-3 with a 2.83 GAA and .911 SV% at home this season.

Red Wings at Flyers odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Flyers 4, Red Wings 2

Money line

The FLYERS (-112) are worth a look, as they finally appear to be piecing things together and going back to basics. Detroit has had tremendous difficulty against Philly over the years, going 1-14 in the past 15 trips to the City of Brotherly Love, and 7-19 in the past 26 meetings overall.

Against the spread

The FLYERS -1.5 (+205) is worth playing lightly for the chance to double up as Nedeljkovic has struggled to shut down the opposition lately. Even though it has had a hard time lighting the lamp over the past month or so Philly is still worth a small play.

Over/Under

OVER 5.5 (-135) is worth playing lightly, as Nedeljkovic has allowed 3 or more goals in five of the past six outings and this series has seen the Over connect in seven of the past nine meetings in Philadelphia.
