While Detroit did come out on top, it concerningly shot worse from the field and lost the rebounding edge. G Cade Cunningham also picked up where he left off last season, shooting just 6-for-16 from the field for 18 points.

New York went into Memphis and took the Grizzlies to overtime in its first action of the season Wednesdays. The Knicks ultimately fell to the Griz 115-112 as 4.5-point underdogs.

I expect the Knicks to rebound well and come out on top in this Eastern Conference battle, but there just isn’t value on backing them at (-300).

Against the spread

BET KNICKS -6.5 (-117).

The Pistons home win over Orlando, which is started out down double figures early, was more about the Magic’s young core than Detroit’s dominance.

The Pistons shot worse and were outrebounded Wednesday and against a much bigger Knicks team with veterans like Randle, New York should be able to punish the Pistons’ inefficiencies defensively.

Also, G Jalen Brunson looked like the missing piece, putting up an efficient 15 points and 9 assists in his Knicks debut. The playmaking he adds coupled with the paint protection by C Mitchell Robinson should be enough to limit the Pistons in this one.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 219.5 (-108).

The New York offense is going to have some chemistry issues early on in the season, and that was clearly seen against Memphis. The Knicks shot just 40.4% from the field and 24.3% from deep.

New York had 18 offensive boards yet wasn’t great on the offensive glass last season. Expecting some regression there, the Knicks could struggle to score.

They did hold Memphis to 38.9% shooting, and the Pistons do not have a Morant-like talent. New York’s ability to control the paint will be a big enough factor to assume the Pistons will struggle to score.

I like the Knicks to win this game, but they’ve been an embarrassment at times this season and are just 5-10 at home. Similarly, the Pistons have, by far, the worst record over their last 10 games, just 1-9.

I’d pass.

Against the spread

Slight “LEAN” to the PISTONS +6.5 (-107). It’s getting the juice here, so the sportsbooks favor this side as well.

The Pistons are starting to find an identity without Grant. On the season, Detroit is the second-worst shooting team, but over its last five, it is just two spots behind New York.

With the Knicks defensive having slumped, the reason they aren’t the same covering team as last season and their many players in health and safety protocols, I wouldn’t bet on them to win by this margin.

The Knicks’ strength is their offensive rebounding, ranking 9th. While Detroit isn’t a top-tier rebounding side, it does rank 20th which is higher than it ranks in most other metrics.

Given New York is down most of its bench and a key scorer while Detroit is just down a key scorer, I’ll roll with the healthier side.

Over/Under

BET on the OVER 207.5 (-108) as the Knicks have struggled defensively. New York sits 23rd in defensive rating while Detroit is 22nd.

The Knicks have won back-to-back games and three of their last four entering Sunday. New York is one of the surprising teams so far this season and has a chance to end the month with a winning record after beginning it 9-13. The Knicks are 8-5 in February with an average score of 109.2-105.3.

Detroit’s season is nearing tank-mode as the Pistons have lost two straight and five of their last six games. The Pistons returned home after a five-game road trip in their last game only to lose to a Sacramento Kings team that was on a nine-game losing streak.

New York has won and covered two in a row against Detroit, and both games fell short of the total by at least 24 points.

Situationally, this is a terrible spot for the KNICKS (-105) as New York played last night, and this will be its fourth game in six nights. Detroit has a winning ATS record, and the robotic sharp play is to fade an unproven Knicks team that could be on tired legs.

However, there’s real excitement around this Knicks team with Julius Randle getting selected to his first All-Star team, and if the Knicks win this game, they’ll be above .500 this deep into the season for the first time in years.

There are a lot of fair questions about New York’s legitimacy as a playoff contender, but the Knicks are on fire, and I’d rather follow that momentum than fade it. BET the KNICKS (-105) for 1.5 units.

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS unless the number gets bet up to the Knicks +2.5. Despite the rest factor, there are a couple of ATS trends that support New York in this spot including the Knicks covering seven of their last eight against losing teams and the Pistons being 0-4 ATS in their last four as a favorite.

Over/Under (O/U)

Slight lean on the Over 210.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit, but I much prefer the sides over the total in Knicks-Pistons. But, this total opened at 215 for a reason, and I am nervous this game will bust several of the Under trends both teams have.
