Dan Campbell: Some Lions players ‘everyone thought was going to make it’ will not

Campbell praised several players by name and said some players not expected to make the Lions will and some who everyone expected to make it will not

Lions head coach Dan Campbell said this week that roster cuts were very tough on him as a former player who knows the heart and soul the players put into trying to make the team. In the wake of the Lions’ 26-20 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second preseason game could force Campbell to make some tough decisions he wasn’t expecting.

With another wave of roster cuts due on Tuesday, Campbell opened up the possibility that there could be some upheaval to the expected depth chart and roster composition.

Campbell name-checked several Lions who impressed him in the second half, including LB Derrick Barnes, QB David Blough, RB Godwin Igwebuike, WR Tom Kennedy and S Jalen Elliott.

The “tale of two halves” as Campbell called it appeared to really impact the coach’s take on the depth chart and position battles.

“There’s some guys who are growing, who are getting better,” Campbell said with focused emphasis in his postgame press conference. “And there were some guys that maybe were counted out that have a chance of now making this team. And then there’s some ones that maybe everyone thought was going to make it and they’re not going to make it.”

Coach Campbell did not elaborate specifically on any players he was referencing, but anyone who watched the game can offer up a few educated guesses. Linebackers Jahlani Tavai and Jalen Reeves-Maybin left horrible impressions from viewing the first half in real-time. On the flip side, RB Craig Reynolds and the aforementioned Kennedy each turned in very strong and effective efforts in the second half.

The Lions have to cut the roster from 85 to 80 by Tuesday. Detroit’s final preseason game comes Friday night at home against the Indianapolis Colts.

Lions finish strong but come up short vs. Steelers in tale of two preseason halves

The Detroit Lions finish strong but come up short vs. Steelers in a tale of two preseason halves

Give the Detroit Lions credit, they did not quit. An impressive second half in Heinz Field in Saturday night’s preseason game made the final score interesting, but the Lions could not overcome the awful first half. The Steelers held on and prevailed, 26-20, dropping the Lions to 0-2 in the exhibition season.

The first half was as bad of a football product as the Detroit Lions have produced in a long time, and given the team’s recent depths, that’s saying something.

It was a much different and happier story after halftime. Once the Steelers pulled their starters, Detroit largely dominated the game. Strong second-half performances from rookie LB Derrick Barnes, RB Craig Reynolds, plucky QB David Blough and others allowed the Lions to score 20 of the final 23 points, all after halftime.

In the final quarter, Detroit ran 31 offensive plays that netted 215 yards in three drives, all ending in touchdowns. Barnes spearheaded a defensive effort that surrendered just 106 yards after halftime after getting eviscerated for 285 in the abysmal first half.

In his postgame press conference, Barnes laid it out.

“We treated (the second half) as if the score was 0-0,” the fourth-round rookie from Purdue said. And the Lions depth played like it, dominating the fourth quarter and creating a lot of questions about roster spots and the depth chart entering the preseason finale against the Colts on Friday.

Lions abysmal 1st half vs. Steelers shows just how far the team has to go

The Lions lack of depth and inept, sloppy play in the first half was tough to watch

Pour out the Honolulu blue Kool-Aid. Or pour something strong and intoxicating into it. Either way, the first half from the Detroit Lions in Saturday night’s preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers is about as discouraging of a half of football as Lions fans have ever seen.

Thank goodness it didn’t count in the standings. That’s about the only saving grace from a truly dreadful performance by Dan Campbell’s team.

They couldn’t cover anyone. They couldn’t tackle. They couldn’t run block on offense. They committed penalty after dumb penalty. It was an undisciplined, unrefined, uninspiring performance by Detroit.

There is some important context. The Steelers played their starters deep into the second quarter, while Campbell sat most of the Lions starters for the entire night. Pittsburgh should have looked much better than Detroit’s second-team players. But it’s how the Lions facilitated the Steelers’ impressive performance that should bother Detroit fans.

It will certainly bother Campbell and his coaches. This was sloppy football. The halftime box score is a good place to start:

But it was so much worse than the numbers. It’s one thing for better athletes, better players, to beat a team. But when the players on the wrong end of the hose are playing bad fundamental football, making mental errors and failing to do things that should be second nature for NFLers, it’s a soul-crushing defeat.

This was a gross illustration of just how far behind the Lions roster is from being where it needs to be. Again, expecting Detroit’s backups to compete with Pittsburgh’s starters is irresponsible. But expecting them to not look like they’ve not practiced, playing undisciplined and repeating dumb mistakes and mental errors, that’s not asking too much. And the Lions failed at that in the first half. Miserably. And that includes a few guys who will be starters on both sides of the ball, too.

It’s a necessary dose of harsh reality that it’s going to take some time before the new regime can cleanse itself of the sins of the prior one. Any injuries to starters at pretty much any position group during the regular season will quickly devolve the games that do count in the standings into looking like this stinkbomb of an exhibition.

Lions preseason: Who and what to watch for in the matchup with the Steelers

Players to watch and things to take note of when the Detroit Lions face the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second preseason game

When the Detroit Lions meet the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, August 21st in Heinz Field, it will be the second preseason game for Dan Campbell’s team. The coach has already ruled out a few key players for the trip to Pittsburgh, but that only creates opportunities to watch other players and facets of the team.

Here are some of the things to focus on when the Lions play the Steelers in the only preseason road game for Detroit in 2021.

D’Andre Swift, T.J. Hockenson will not play vs. Steelers

Both Swift and Hockenson will do more in practice but are still not going to play in the exhibition game

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell ruled out starting RB D’Andre Swift and Pro Bowl TE T.J. Hockenson for Saturday’s preseason matchup in Pittsburgh with the Steelers. Campbell made the declaration in his pre-practice press conference on Thursday.

Swift has been dealing with a groin injury. He will get reps in the team drills portion of practice on Thursday after sitting out the last practice in street clothes. Swift has not been a full participant in practice since the first week of training camp.

Hockenson landed hard in a practice session late last week and has not done anything more than individual drills since. He will not be active in team drills in Thursday’s practice but is expected to return to a full workload next week, per Campbell.

In addition to Swift and Hockenson, starting defensive end Michael Brockers will also not play in the second preseason game. He also sat out last Friday’s preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills. Several other more established Lions are also not expected to play in Pittsburgh, though Campbell has yet to make any of them official.
