Detroit-based bowl reportedly ‘preferred destination’ if MSU reaches bowl eligibility

It seems clear where Michigan State football will be bowling this year should they beat Rutgers this week

If Michigan State football beats Rutgers this week to reach bowl eligibility, there’s reportedly a strong chance they’ll remain close to home this holiday season.

Braw Crawford of 247Sports’ released his weekly bowl projections on Sunday morning, and stated the GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detroit is the “preferred destination” for Michigan State should they reach bowl eligibility. The exact quote from Crawford can be found below:

“Sources told 247Sports that Detroit is the preferred destination for the Spartans if they hit the magic number.”

The quote from Crawford doesn’t clarify if the Detroit-based bowl game is preferred by the Spartans, Big Ten or GameAbove Sports Bowl reps. It certainly would make sense for the Spartans to land in a game close to home in an effort to draw a big crowd.

Crawford currently has Michigan State facing Buffalo of the Mid-American Conference in his latest projections. Jerry Palm of CBS Sports has the Spartans facing Miami (OH) in the same bowl game in his last projections.

Michigan State is 5-6 overall on the year and must beat Rutgers in the season finale on Saturday to reach bowl eligibility. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. on Saturday.
