Destiny 2: Vow of the Disciple Caretaker Encounter Guide

How to take down the Caretaker in the second Raid encounter.

Apart from the Projection of Savathûn lurking in the swamps outside the Pyramid Ship, Vow of the Disciple has been low on big bad enemies up to this point, but that all changes in the Caretaker encounter.

This fight combines the same glyph and defense elements we learned about during Acquisition with a good old-fashioned big boss, who needs to be prepped for damage and then burned down with heavyweight DPS (damage per second).

Naturally, he needs this treatment multiple times in an elaborate multi-floor arena, and if the team wipes at any point then it’s right back to the start.

Here is our guide to the Caretaker encounter in Vow of the Disciple in Destiny 2.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen has introduced a new Power level cap for players to work towards, which means that everyone has to begin the grind again to prepare themselves for endgame activities.

The manner in which you level up has not changed. You still have to grind regular activities until you hit the soft cap, then seek out Powerful and Pinnacle Gear to edge past that towards the Power and Pinnacle level caps.

Here is a complete breakdown of Destiny 2 Power levels in The Witch Queen and Season of the Risen, and the most efficient ways to increase your Power.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen – Throne World Region Chest locations

Find these golden chests in Destiny 2 The Witch Queen to complete the Trust Goes Both Ways quest.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is upon us, meaning Savathûn is rampaging across the solar system unleashing devastation and sowing tricksy plans. The Hive god of deception and cunning seems to be stealing the Light, and while that sort of blasphemy will obviously need to be dealt with, there are also various side quests to help you get used to the new Throne World location where much of the campaign takes place. One of these, doled out by your Hive ghost buddy Fynch, is called Trust Goes Both Ways, and some of the quest steps involve locating Region Chests. Fortunately, we’ve found them all and documented the process.

New Destiny 2 weapon sound effect made with beef mac and cheese

Bungie’s sound team got creative with The Witch King’s weapons.

A fan-favorite weapon in Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is undoubtedly the Parasite grenade launcher, which uses beef mac and cheese sloshing about for its firing sound effect.

The fine folks over at GamesRadar took part in a group interview with Bungie audio lead Evan Buehler, who explains that much of Destiny 2’s soundscape comes from places you would never expect.

“With Parasite, the worm launcher, some of the sounds incorporated in there are sounds you might find in your house,” Buehler said. “I know if you’ve ever made some fresh pasta, specifically beef mac and cheese, and kind of mixed it around a little bit, some of those sounds were used to create that. Maybe not so great or weird, but it’s something you could experience or understand in your own home.”

One of The Witch Queen’s lead-up trailers showcases the Parasite, and you can briefly hear the gooey goodness below.

Goodness, it’s somewhat hard separating the mental image of cheesy pasta and burger meat squishing about a bowl every time the Parasite fires.

Buehler says that discovering how Destiny 2: The Witch Queen’s various fantastical elements, like the voice of the Hive Worm, is consistently challenging.

“That’s the kind of question we always have to answer with an expansion like this,” Buehler explains. “We’ll go, what does a worm sound like? A lot goes into that. There’s the voice actor who voices it, that’s a lot of the character that you hear. And then there’s a lot of audio processing that goes on that to sound a way, it’s kind of a collaboration between the processing and the acting to get it to sound the way we want it to sound. Our intention is to make it interesting and memorable when that worm speaks.”

Now we’re left wondering how often mac and cheese is in video games, unbeknownst to us all.

Bungie is looking into Destiny 2: The Witch King’s crashing issues on PC

Certain applications aren’t playing nice with the expansion.

While most Destiny 2 fans are celebrating the Witch Queen expansion’s release, the PC version appears to be suffering some launch woes.

Over on the official Bungie Help Twitter account, the studio made a statement on Tuesday regarding stability issues and crashing on the PC version of Destiny 2: The Witch Queen

“We’re investigating issues where some PC performance optimization apps for graphic cards and fan speed control are causing Destiny 2 to crash,” Bungie said on Twitter. “Players encountering issues are encouraged to fully exit out of these applications before launching the game.”

As of the time of this post going live, Bungie has yet to administer a permanent fix to the ongoing problems. However, following the company’s advice about closing specific applications seems to be working for many.

MSI Afterburner is popular on PC since it allows for snappy, easily tweakable changes to a desktop’s performance — right down to fan speed. Many Destiny 2 players probably use it, hence why many are running into problems.

The extra technical hiccups come with the territory while playing video games on PC, though. Bungie will likely administer a fix as fast as possible, so Destiny 2 fans on the platform fans will have to hold tight for now.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen – when you can play in your time zone on console and PC

Here’s when you can take on Savathun.

The time to face-down Savathun is nearly here, as Destiny 2: The Witch Queen will be very soon.

A recent This Week At Bungie (TWAB) update details how Destiny 2’s newest expansion will begin rolling out. Let’s take a look at how it’s all going down.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen release schedule

  • Feb. 21 at 6:45 P.M. PDT // 9:45 P.M. EDT: Destiny 2 is brought offline.
  • Feb. 21, 7:00 P.M. PDT // 10:00 P.M. EDT: Pre-load for Update 4.0.0.1 will be available across all platforms.
  • Feb. 22, 9:00 A.M. PDT // 12:00 P.M. EDT: Destiny 2 will be brought back online. Update 4.0.0.1 becomes playable across all platforms and regions.
  • Feb. 22, 10:00 A.M. PDT // 1:00 P.M. EDT: Destiny 2 maintenance is scheduled to complete.

Folks playing on PS4 have another step ahead of them before playing Destiny 2: The Witch Queen, though. The TWAB post claims PS4 owners must download “all associated Destiny 2 Required Content” before diving into The Witch Queen expansion. Bungie notes that all of these will be available for download after the 4.0.0.1 patch comes out.

Bungie states that if all goes according to plan, The Witch Queen will release simultaneously across all platforms on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 9:00 A.M. PDT // 12:00 P.M. EDT // 5:00 P.M. GMT. We’ll add several more time zones in the section below.

New Destiny 2: The Witch Queen interactive trailer recaps story ahead of expansion

The trailer features plenty of lore about the main villain, Savathûn.

Destiny 2, like a lot of long-running service games, is a bit complicated to follow. It’s got a years-long story at this point that weaves together multiple eras, characters and factions, not to mention sci-fi and fantasy elements that embellish things quite a bit. It’s dense and hard to make sense of.

This fact has only become truer for Destiny 2, which had a large chunk of its first-year content ripped out to make room for the Beyond Light expansion in 2020. It’s a shame because a good deal of it was solid and, more importantly, plotted some of the earliest seeds for the upcoming expansion, The Witch Queen, and its villain, Savathûn.

Bungie, likely aware of how hard this story is to comprehend as a new or lapsed player, while also riding the high of the excitement generating around The Witch Queen, has released an interactive trailer as part of an expansive rollout that’s shown off class changes and a highly-anticipated weapon crafting system. The trailer catches players up on the background of the series’ most threatening villain yet and some of the key moments to keep in mind going into this next stretch of Destiny 2’s ongoing narrative.

Framed as an investigation and debriefing, the minutes-long trailer on Bungie’s website details where Savathûn hails from and the origin of her and her family’s power, as well as the rise of the Hive, her species and a major recurring faction that players frequently battle. Clickable icons dive deeper than the narration to explain facets of the dense lore and some recent story beats that set up the conflicts that will be coming to a head here very soon.

Overall, the trailer is a short-but-smart way to get players caught up just enough to get the magnitude of The Witch Queen ahead of its release on Feb. 22.
