Looking at Colorado’s quarterback depth behind Shedeur Sanders

How do you feel about Colorado’s QB depth behind Shedeur Sanders?

Compared to last year, the Colorado Buffaloes should feel better about the backup quarterback depth they’ve built behind starter Shedeur Sanders.

Ryan Staub, who played well in last year’s season finale, should be first off the bench as Colorado’s No. 2 QB. The redshirt freshman from California completed over 70% of his passes (17-for-24) while throwing for 195 yards and a touchdown in his start at Utah. And perhaps even more encouraging, he didn’t throw a single interception in 40 total passes last season.

Staub is a solid backup quarterback but the room gets somewhat shaky behind him. As things currently stand, it’ll likely be a battle between Kentucky Wildcats transfer Destin Wade and former Vanderbilt Commodore Walter Taylor III for the No. 3 spot on the depth chart. Neither looked particularly impressive during the spring game but each owns experience at the Power Four level.

Former Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch, CO) quarterback Colton Allen is also on the roster as a walk-on. Allen has yet to see game action in two seasons with the Buffs.

Looking at the future of the position, Colorado is pushing hard to steal class of 2025 five-star quarterback Julian “JuJu” Lewis’ commitment from the USC Trojans. If that doesn’t work out, I’d expect head coach Deion Sanders to land an accomplished transfer and/or sign another 2025 prospect.

Kentucky transfer QB Destin Wade joins the Buffaloes

The Buffs added an intriguing weapon at the QB position

After loading up on offensive talent on the outside and on the line, the Colorado Buffaloes secured their potential quarterback of the future on Friday. Former four-star prospect (247Sports Composite) Destin Wade announced his intentions to transfer to Boulder after spending two years with the Kentucky Wildcats along with his brother Keaten Wade, who also committed to CU.

Listed at 6-foot-3, 223 pounds, Wade redshirted his freshman year at Kentucky in 2022 and started in the Wildcats’ bowl game, completing 16 of 30 passes for 98 yards while gaining 23 yards on 17 rushing attempts. Wade did not see any game action this past season, however.

Watching his high school tape, Wade’s dual-threat ability jumps off the screen. During his senior season at Summit (Tennessee), Wade rushed for 2,308 yards and 30 touchdowns while passing for 1,436 yards and 18 touchdowns. Along with being named Tennessee’s  “Mr. Football,” he led his team to the state championship game three years in a row as a starter and won the title as a junior.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Wade is used as a running threat next season to spell Sheduer Sanders and jumpstart the Buffaloes’ rushing attack, much like Tim Tebow did at Florida during his freshman season.

Iowa continues ridiculous touchdown trend with two pick-sixes against Kentucky

Kentucky freshman quarterback Destin Wade threw two pick-sixes against the Iowa Hawkeyes in the second quarter of the Music City Bowl.

Say what you will about Iowa’s offense — and we’ve all said something derogatory at some point. When it comes to defense, the Hawkeyes know how to be opportunistic.

In the second quarter of Saturday’s Music City Bowl, two different defenders took Kentucky quarterback Destin Wade to the house with pick-sixes.

First, with 11:57 left in the first half, there was Xavier Nwankpa’s 52-yard return touchdown…

…and then, with 1:36 left in the first half, it was Cooper DeJean’s turn with this 14-yard score.

Quarterback Will Levis had opted out of the bowl game to focus on his future as a draft prospect, so it was up to Wade, a true freshman with no prior game experience, to shoulder the load.

There aren’t many defenses prepared to make an unprepared quarterback look bad than Iowa’s. This season, they have a fascinating ratio of passing touchdowns on either side of the ball.

Tennessee target stands out in state championship

Tennessee Vols’ football recruiting news.

The Summit High School Spartans won the Tennessee 5A state championship game, defeating Oak Ridge 28-7.

Tennessee target and dual-threat quarterback Destin Wade led the charge in the win, scoring three touchdowns.

Wade rushed for 93 yards and a score, and completed 7-of-10 pass attempts for 153 yards and another touchdown to capture Summit’s first state title.

Wade is a 6-foot-3, 205-pound prospect in the 2022 recruiting class that is rated the No. 15 dual-threat prospect in his class and the No. 17 player in Tennessee.

He has entertained offers from Kentucky, Baylor, South Carolina, Penn State and others.

Wade’s twin brother, Keaten Wade, is an outside linebacker for Summit that also contributed significantly to the Spartans’ championship season. Keaten is a 4-star prospect and holds an offer from Tennessee.

Tennessee target reaches 5A state championship game

This prospect has several offers, including one from the Vols.

As state championship weekend in Tennessee quickly approaches, one UT target had a standout performance in helping his team to the 5A title game.

2022 dual-threat quarterback Destin Wade rushed for 221 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. He totaled 173 passing yards and one touchdown Friday as his Summit Spartans defeated Henry County, 35-21, advancing to the state championship game in back-to-back seasons.

The Spartans will play Oak Ridge.

Last season, Summit fell short of a state championship with a 30-7 loss to Knoxville Central. This will be Summit’s last game at the 5A level, as they will move up to 6A starting in 2021.

Wade is a 3-star prospect on the 247Sports Composite, and is rated the No. 15 dual-threat quarterback in his class.

He holds offers from Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Arizona State and others. Wade’s primary recruiter is Tennessee wide receivers coach Tee Martin.

Wade’s twin brother, Keaton Wade, is a running back and linebacker for Summit who also has received interest from UT and other schools.
