LSU defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy declares for 2023 NFL draft

Roy started 12 of 13 games this fall, totaling 49 tackles.

LSU’s turnover along the defensive line continued on Tuesday as defensive tackle [autotag]Jaquelin Roy[/autotag] declared for the 2023 NFL draft.

The junior and hometown kid from University Lab High School in Baton Rouge became a full-time starter alongside [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] on the interior this season. He appeared in all 13 games (starting 12 of them), and he finished the year with 49 tackles (3.5 for loss).

LSU has seen some losses on the defensive line so far this offseason between [autotag]BJ Ojulari[/autotag] and [autotag]Ali Gaye[/autotag] joining Roy in the draft, along with the addition of [autotag]Desmond Little[/autotag] in the transfer portal.

To help recoup some of these losses, LSU landed a trio of defensive line transfers on Tuesday in [autotag]Paris Shand[/autotag] (Arizona), [autotag]Bradyn Swinson[/autotag] (Oregon) and [autotag]Jalen Lee[/autotag] (Florida).

LSU edge rusher BJ Ojulari officially declares for 2023 NFL draft

Ojulari made his plans official on Sunday.

In a decision that came as no surprise, star LSU edge rusher [autotag]BJ Ojulari[/autotag] officially announced his intentions to leave the Tigers and declare for the 2023 NFL draft on Sunday. News of Ojulari’s decision first circulated earlier in the weekend, and Ojulari made things official with an announcement on Twitter.

An on and off-field leader for the Tigers who represented the team at SEC Media Days and was chosen to wear the No. 18 jersey this fall, Ojulari finished the 2022 season with 36 solo tackles, five sacks and a forced fumble. He was named a First Team All-SEC selection for his efforts, and he’s considered one of the top edge rushing prospects in the 2023 draft.

The loss of Ojulari and [autotag]Ali Gaye[/autotag], as well as [autotag]Desmond Little[/autotag], who enters the transfer portal, leaves LSU a bit thin on the edge heading into 2023.

Tigers offer talented edge rusher in the transfer portal

Josaiah Stewart could be taking his talents to Baton Rouge after a massively productive two seasons at Coastal Carolina.

In the new transfer portal era, you have the opportunity to land players who saw things not work out at their previous schools for one reason or another. However, you also have some players coming off massive years at smaller programs looking for a more significant challenge.

[autotag]Josaiah Stewart[/autotag], a talented edge rusher from Coastal Carolina who entered the transfer portal on Tuesday, falls squarely into the latter category. The sophomore and former three-star recruit is coming off an incredible two-year campaign in Conway with the Chanticleers, and he picked up an offer from LSU on Friday.

In two seasons, the Everett, Massachusetts, (by way of the Bronx) product totaled 80 tackles, 16 sacks and four forced fumbles. He received multiple all-conference and national all-freshman honors last season in addition to being named the Sun Belt Defensive Lineman of the Year.

However, after totaling 12.5 sacks and three forced fumbles as a true freshman in 2021, he saw his production drop off quite a bit this season. He’s looking for a change of scenery to help get back to his previous production, and an LSU team that will likely lose [autotag]BJ Ojulari[/autotag] and [autotag]Ali Gaye[/autotag], in addition to [autotag]Desmond Little[/autotag] in the transfer portal, could be a great fit.

LSU Injury News: Tigers freshman defensive end out for Florida State game

Quency Wiggins was spotted on the sidelines on a scooter with a boot on his left foot.

LSU could have one of the best defensive lines in the SEC, if not the entire nation, in 2022. However, defensive coordinator Matt House’s group appears to be down a depth piece up front for the season-opener against Florida State on Sunday night.

True freshman defensive end [autotag]Quency Wiggins[/autotag] is not expected to play in this one after he was spotted on the sideline using a scooter with a boot on his left foot. The severity of his injury is unclear, but it seems he could be unavailable for the Tigers in the near future.

With Wiggins unavailable, LSU will rely on players like Saivion Jones, [autotag]Zavier Carter[/autotag] and [autotag]Desmond Little[/autotag] to provide depth behind starting edge players [autotag]BJ Ojulari[/autotag] and [autotag]Ali Gaye[/autotag].

A Baton Rouge native, Wiggins was a four-star recruit who attended nearby Madison Prep Academy. Ranking just outside of the national top-75 as a recruit, Wiggins was expected to contribute in the rotation as a true freshman.

However, it seems Tigers fans will have to wait to see his debut in the purple and gold.
