Report: Trade between Texans, Dolphins for QB Deshaun Watson ‘unlikely’

The Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins aren’t expected to make a deal before the trade deadline on Nov. 2.

The Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins may not complete the process to send quarterback Deshaun Watson to the AFC East.

According to Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790, the Texans and Dolphins aren’t expected to make a deal before the trade deadline on Nov. 2 at 3:00 p.m. Central Time.

Dealing Watson at the trade deadline wouldn’t exactly be helpful to Miami as they are 1-7, the same as Houston. Watson would be going from one challenged franchise to another, and it is highly unlikely Watson’s presence would lead to Miami ripping off enough of a winning streak to put the Dolphins in the postseason.

Another big holdup has to be the murkiness of Watson’s status as it pertains to his off-field issues. The three-time Pro Bowler is the defendant in a lawsuit wherein 22 women allege he committed sexual assault. Furthermore, 10 women have filed such criminal complains with the Houston Police Department, for which there has also been an FBI probe. Arguably the biggest red flag for any NFL owner is that the whole matter is being investigated by the league and is subject to its own punitive action.

Panthers not expected to trade for Texans QB Deshaun Watson

The Carolina Panthers are not expected to pursue a trade for Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson at this time.

The Carolina Panthers are out of the Deshaun Watson trade sweepstakes.

According to Kevin Patra of NFL.com, who heavily cited the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the NFC South team will not be pursuing the Houston Texans’ three-time Pro Bowl quarterback.

The only team for which Watson has waived his no-trade clause is the Miami Dolphins, and they may be the only team in the running as the Nov. 2 trade deadline approaches.

Arguably the biggest complication to executing a trade has been Watson’s off-field issues. The former 2017 first-round pick is currently a defendant in a lawsuit wherein 22 women allege sexual assault. Not only have there been 10 criminal complaints filed with the Houston Police Department and an FBI probe, but the NFL is conducting its own investigation. The possibility is a team could give up a franchise quarterback’s ransom for Watson, and his off-field issues land him on the commissioner’s exempt list or result in a lengthy suspension.

Report: Teams interested in Texans QB Deshaun Watson want legal issues resolved

Before the Houston Texans trade QB Deshaun Watson, there are teams that want the legal issues resolved first.

In order for the Houston Texans to finally complete a trade that sends quarterback Deshaun Watson to a new NFL city, a huge hurdle must be cleared.

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, teams that are interested in making a deal with the Texans, including the Miami Dolphins, want the three-time Pro Bowler’s legal issues resolved.

The legal issues are more severe than the nonpayment of a jewelry bill. Watson has been named as a defendant in a lawsuit wherein 22 women allege he committed sexual assault. The NFL is currently investigating the matter, and 10 criminal complaints have been filed with the Houston Police Department. There is concern that Watson would be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list after his new team gave up a boatload of picks for the reigning NFL passing champion.

The Carolina Panthers are a team that has entered the talks after their 25-3 loss to the New York Giants in Week 7. Josina Anderson has also reported that other teams are interested.

Report: Dolphins aren’t the only trade destination for Texans QB Deshaun Watson

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson has other teams that are interested in a trade, not just the Miami Dolphins.

The Miami Dolphins aren’t the only team in the sweepstakes for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

According to Josina Anderson from USA TODAY Sports+, the Dolphins are among few teams who are in the running. Although Miami may be Watson’s preferred destination, according to Anderson’s source, ‘There are more teams Deshaun Watson can go to besides Miami. It’s not just Miami or bust.”

One of the teams that has come to the fore is the Carolina Panthers. After their 25-3 loss to the New York Giants, the Panthers are expected to be one of the teams vying for Watson’s services and to execute a trade before the Nov. 2 deadline.

Along with the Texans’ trade compensation for Watson, which is expected to be at least three first-round picks and two second-round selections, the biggest complication to getting a deal done is the three-time Pro Bowler’s off-field issues.

Watson is currently the defendant in a lawsuit wherein 22 women allege sexual assault, is the subject of 10 criminal complaints filed with the Houston Police Department, and is under investigation by the NFL.

On Sunday, Ian Rapoport surmised why Watson has not been placed on the commissioner’s exempt list. On Tuesday, Jenny Vrentas from Sports Illustrated provided further explanation as to how Watson could end up on the list nevertheless.

Another team is expected to enter the trade talks for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

According to Joe Person from The Athletic, the Carolina Panthers are expected to be players for the three-time Pro Bowler.

The Panthers dropped to 3-4 on the season when the New York Giants dominated them 25-3 Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium. Starting quarterback Sam Darnold went 16-of-25 for 111 yards and an interception. P.J. Walker, of Houston Roughnecks fame, was worse going 3-of-14 for 33 yards.

Carolina started the year 3-0 but have since hit a four-game losing streak. A spark at quarterback may be what the Panthers need to get back in a competitive race for the NFC South.

Every team trading for Watson will have to consider the quarterback’s off-field situation as he is currently named as a defendant in a lawsuit wherein 22 women have alleged sexual assault. Furthermore, Watson has had criminal complaints filed against him with the Houston Police Department, Along with an ongoing NFL investigation, there was an FBI probe.

Watson requested a trade from the Texans in late January. The former 2017 first-round pick has a no-trade clause in his contract.

Why isn’t Texans QB Deshaun Watson on the commissioner’s exempt list?

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network provided a reason as to why Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson is not on the commissioner’s exempt list.

One of the bigger mysteries in the Deshaun Watson saga is why the Houston Texans quarterback is not on the commissioner’s exempt list.

Watson is currently named as a defendant in a lawsuit wherein 22 women have alleged sexual assault, has had criminal complaints filed against him with the Houston Police Department, has been involved in an FBI probe, and also has the NFL investigating the entire ordeal.

Although the criminal justice system is still centered around the concept of “innocent until proven guilty,” the court of public opinion has already levied a verdict: where there is smoke, there is fire. Given the volume of allegations and activity surrounding the Watson case, sports fans are perplexed as to why he has not been placed on the commissioner’s exempt list.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network provided a perspective on Sunday as to why the NFL has not acted in that regard and may not anytime soon.

“According to personal conduct policy, in the latest version, a player can be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list if he is charged with a felony or a violent crime,” Rapoport said. “As of right now, that does not apply to Deshaun Watson. I have not heard that he is going to be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list, even if someone trades for him, even if his legal situation is unsettled. Barring some sort of unexpected development, I would expect him to be eligible to play.”

Watson was the subject of trade rumors this week as the Texans still seek to move the three-time Pro Bowler, as his trade request from late January is still active. Watson has been a healthy scratch on all six of the Texans’ game day inactives lists, and he has not taken part in regular season practices at all.

Nevertheless, Rapoport says Watson is still ready to play once dealt.

“He is also, for whatever it is worth, in shape, been doing nothing but working out and throwing the football,” said Rapoport. “So, if a team does trade for him, he should be ready to go once he gets acclimated to the offense.”

Report: Texans and Dolphins in ‘serious negotiations’ for Deshaun Watson trade

The Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins could be nearing an agreement that sends three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson to South Beach.

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle (subscription), the Texans and the Dolphins are working to get a trade finished this week. The ultimate deadline is the NFL’s trade deadline on Nov. 2.

Even though the NFL trading deadline isn’t until Nov. 2, a deal could go down this week, according to people familiar with the negotiations.

General manager Nick Caserio has been adamant that the club received three first-round pick and two second-round picks for Watson. While the reigning NFL passing champion would no doubt wave his no-trade clause to go to Miami, one of his preferred destinations, teams have trepidation about acquiring a player with pending litigation. Watson is the defendant in a lawsuit wherein 22 women alleged sexual assault, and the NFL’s investigation into the matter is ongoing.

According to Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790, a third team involved in a separate potential trade with Houston is holding up the deal.

The Texans and Dolphins meet each other Nov. 9 at Hard Rock Stadium.

Chris Mortensen puts Texans’ trading of QB Deshaun Watson in 2021 ‘under 50-50’

ESPN NFL insider Chris Mortensen believes the Houston Texans will trade Deshaun Watson in 2021, but the chances of it happening are below 50%.

Count ESPN NFL insider Chris Mortensen among those who believe that the Houston Texans will trade quarterback Deshaun Watson before the trade deadline, allowing the three-time Pro Bowler to play ball in 2021.

Mortensen joined “The Wheelhouse” on ESPN 97.5 [KFNC-FM] Thursday and talked about the possibility of Watson playing in another NFL city this season.

“I’ll say this, Nov. 2 is the trade deadline,” Mortensen said. “I’m of the mind right now that Deshaun Watson is going to play football this year. But that’s just me speculating. That’s not reporting. It’s just that based off the calendar, unless we get an indictment from a grand jury, I think it’s possible he gets traded. I really do.”

Watson is currently involved in pending litigation as a defendant as 22 women have accused him of sexual assault. There are also 10 criminal complaints of the same nature filed with the Houston Police Department.

Although Mortensen believes Watson will play in 2021, he is handicapping the odds at less than 50%.

Said Mortensen: “You still probably put this thing under 50-50 of happening this year. But as of right now, he isn’t suspended. There’s no indication that he’s going to be suspended or on the commissioner’s [exempt] list now. But that’s still unknown to the team acquiring Deshaun Watson.”

One of the teams Mortensen mentioned that is a preferred destination of Watson’s is the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins are 1-0, same as the Texans.

Throughout training camp, Watson participated in individual drills only. Watson has not practiced for Houston since the regular season began, but is listed on the team’s depth chart as the third quarterback.

Watson requested a trade from the Texans in late January.

Texans want a combination of six players and draft picks for QB Deshaun Watson

The Houston Texans’ trade demands for quarterback Deshaun Watson are part of the reason why there has been a holdup in the operation.

The situation is getting a little more clear as to what the Houston Texans would be willing to accept in order to complete the trading of quarterback Deshaun Watson.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, general manager Nick Caserio is looking for a combination of six players and draft picks. The breakdown could be five picks and a player, or four players and two picks. The point is the Texans will have to get something back in order to accelerate their rebuild and make them competitive every Sunday.

The holdup is Watson’s being named as a defendant in a lawsuit wherein 22 women allege sexual assault.

Sources told ESPN that no team is willing to meet Caserio’s asking price without attaching conditions to the picks because of the ongoing investigations by the FBI, Houston Police Department and NFL into Watson, who faces 22 active civil lawsuits with allegations of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior.

Caserio won’t budge. It has been a theme going back to late January when Watson requested a trade from the organization.

Watson will stay on the Texans’ active roster in 2021 and Houston will pay him $10.5 million just to be on the inactive list.

Houston opens up the regular season against the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday at NRG Stadium.

Report: Texans prepared to keep Deshaun Watson on the 53-man roster and inactive every week

The Houston Texans will reportedly keep QB Deshaun Watson on the active roster and declare him inactive each week of the regular season.

The situation between the Houston Texans and quarterback Deshaun Watson continues to defy precedent.

According to Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790, the Texans are prepared to keep Watson on the active roster and declare him inactive each week.

The three-time Pro Bowler still has not rescinded his trade request from late January. Complicated matters are Watson’s involvement as a defendant in a lawsuit wherein 22 women allege he committed sexual assault. With the NFL conducting their own investigation, some teams interested have expressed the idea of their picks being conditional, should Watson face league punishment. However, the Texans won’t agree to conditional picks.

Watson would be paid $10.54 million just to be inactive every week. Meanwhile the Texans would start Tyrod Taylor in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars with backups Jeff Driskel and rookie Davis Mills on the bench.
