DeShaun Foster’s strong 5-word take message after UCLA’s win over Nebraska

Foster with a strong take here.

At the beginning of the season, questions swirled about whether or not DeShaun Foster was the right guy to be the head coach of the UCLA Bruins.

UCLA barely defeated Hawaii on the road in Week 1 before losing five in a row. However, UCLA has turned it around a bit with back-to-back road wins against Rutgers and Nebraska, which keeps the slim bowl hopes alive for at least another week or two.

After the win in Lincoln on Saturday, Foster had a short but strong message, per Bruin Report Online.

“Martin hired the right guy.”

Martin Jarmond, the UCLA Athletic Director, had to move quickly once Chip Kelly suddenly left to become the offensive coordinator at Ohio State. That prompted in bringing back Foster, who briefly left for an assistant job with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Foster was hired just days after Kelly’s departure, although the move was questioned by many at that time.

However, despite a rough start, UCLA is gaining momentum and has managed to pull off two road wins in the Big Ten.

UCLA football upsets Nebraska for second-straight Big Ten win

The Bruins survived on Saturday to take down their second-straight Big Ten opponent.

The UCLA Bruins have back-to-back wins for the first time in the 2024 college football season. Taking down their second-straight Big Ten opponent, UCLA upset Nebraska on the road 27-20 to improve to 3-5 on the season.

Behind a productive performance by all three units, the Bruins offense, defense, and special teams played in perfect unison, never trailing in the game for a second.

The Bruins started the day strong, owning the time of possession and holding Nebraska to only two yards in the first quarter. A pair of field goals and a touchdown pass later, the Bruins held a narrow but pronounced 13-7 lead.

In the second half, the Bruins kept piling it on. Linebacker Kain Medrano intercepted Cornhusker quarterback Dylan Raiola and returned it for a 38-yard pick-six, and shortly after, Bruins quarterback Ethan Garbers tossed his second touchdown to wideout Kwazi Gilmerpass to give the Bruins a 27-14 lead. Despite a late surge by the Cornhuskers, UCLA’s defense stiffened to secure the win with a game-sealing pick by cornerback Kaylin Moore.

Garbers put together another nice game through the air and on the ground, combining for 275 yards on 17-25 passing with two touchdowns.

Capitalizing on the over-aggressiveness of the Cornhusker defense, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s use of play-action and misdirection proved to be a winning, on-the-fly strategy for the Bruins offense all game long.

But the most notable takeaway from the Bruins win was that head coach DeShaun Foster, for the second week in a row, had his players ready to go on the road. With four winnable games remaining for UCLA, bowl eligibility could be on the table for the surging 2024 Bruins.

UCLA football in the running for four-star wide reciever

UCLA has some stiff competition for a top-tier wide receiver.

The UCLA Bruins have found themselves in another bidding war for a talented prospect. After silencing the doubters following their win over Rutgers, UCLA has a new-found confidence, a confidence they are hoping can translate to the recruiting game.

UCLA landed in four-star wide receiver Kayden Dixon-Wyatt’s final ten schools this week. The 6′ 2″ standout from Inglewood, California, has his hometown Bruins in the running for his commitment alongside heavy hitters like Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, Penn State, and Oregon, according to Hayes Fawcett of On3.

Though UCLA’s competition remains stiff, the fact that the Bruins were the only California-based school is significant. Beating out California schools like USC, Cal, and Stanford, UCLA has something brewing behind the scenes in recruiting.

Time will tell if UCLA is truly a viable team in the Big Ten, but as head coach DeShaun Foster and the Bruins look to pick up wins late in the season, they have a puncher’s chance at landing a recruit of Dixon-Wyatt’s caliber by proving themselves this season.

DeShaun Foster sees Patrick Mahomes comparisons in Nebraska’s Dylan Raiola

Foster says Dylan Raiola reminds him of somebody.

As UCLA prepares to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Week 10, the biggest storyline is Cornhuskers quarterback Dylan Raiola.

The former Georgia commit changed course and decided to come to Lincoln and has gotten off to a strong start in his freshman season.

Raiola has thrown for 1,744 yards with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions as Nebraska has a 5-3 record. The last two weeks have not gone well for Raiola, however. He has a combined zero touchdowns and four interceptions in back-to-back losses, albeit against ranked teams Indiana and Ohio State, both on the road.

On Monday, UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster even said Raiola reminds him of Patrick Mahomes, who Foster worked with during his time at Texas Tech (h/t Tracy McDannald of Rivals).

“UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster said he can see the comparisons made between Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola and Kansas City Cheifs star Patrick Mahomes. Foster was a running backs coach for the Red Raiders when Mahomes was there.”

Raiola reminding Foster of Mahomes is quite the comparison and could make things problematic for UCLA in Lincoln.

UCLA offers third-ranked recruit in 2026 class

The Bruins are one of many college football teams interested in the top-five recruit.

There is some life to the UCLA football team after their Big Ten win over Rutgers on September 19th, and the Bruins are looking to capitalize.

The Bruins have extended an offer to Immanuel Iheanacho, a 6′ 7″ and 340-pound offense tackle from Baltimore, Maryland. The third-ranked recruit in the 2026 class, Iheanacho is a five-star recruit with a boatload of offers, according to Hayes Fawecett of On3. Fielding offers from Texas, Georgia, Oregon, USC, Ohio State, and Alabama, among others, Iheanacho has many programs excited about his potential.

UCLA’s glaring need at offensive line makes it a no-brainer to pursue the best tackle in the 2026 recruiting class. Though the Bruins lack the pedigree of their competitors, UCLA remains an attractive destination for prospective recruits.

As head coach DeShaun Foster continues to build the UCLA program, he will need to produce on and off the field for recruits. Not only does Foster need to rack up wins in the Big Ten to land a player of Iheanacho’s caliber, but Foster and the athletic administration must do whatever it takes to produce commitments on signing day in their recruiting fight.

Why UCLA’s win over Rutgers can change the season

The Bruins first Big Ten win has the chance to change their fortunes.

The Bruins earned a much-need 35-32 win over Rutgers last weekend to improve to 2-5 on the season. Though UCLA’s chances at bowl eligibility look slim, the Bruins did enough to take down a gritty Big Ten program with a winning record.

In the 2024 college football season, losing has been contagious for the Bruins, which begs the question: Can the opposite be true?

The Bruins have five remaining games on their schedule this season, none of which are against a ranked opponent. Though it is unlikely that the Bruins win out in their first season in the Big Ten, the team that took the field against Rutgers showcased the best of what the Bruins are capable of.

Eric Bieniemy’s anemic offense looked both competent and explosive. The defense, save for a late touchdown drive, played a tight ballgame. But most importantly, first-year head coach DeShaun Foster looked to have his players ready for an important game on the road and they delivered.

It is easy to overreact to the Bruins win, but at the very least, UCLA put forth a framework for how the team can win each and every week.

It is a small step, but an important one for the Bruins as they play out the back half of their season looking to finish the season above .500.

DeShaun Foster elated after UCLA’s first-ever Big Ten win

DeShaun Foster is excited.

It took longer than many hoped, but the UCLA Bruins finally got the first-ever win as a member of the Big Ten Conference.

After losing five in a row and four Big Ten games, UCLA got the win over Rutgers in Week 8 despite a long road trip and some difficult matchups.

After the game, UCLA coach DeShaun Foster spoke about the win and what it means to get the victory in Big Ten play, per Ben Bolch of The Los Angeles Times.

“It’s more about the guys, so I’m excited to get a Big Ten win but we’ve got a few more games and I would like to get bowl-eligible, so we’re going to continue to play and hopefully we can get there.”

It was an encouraging performance for UCLA against Rutgers, and UCLA now goes into a Week 9 bye as they can celebrate a bit after the huge victory.

UCLA football takes down Rutgers for first Big Ten win

The Bruins finally notched their first win in the Big Ten, correcting some of their past mistakes against Rutgers.

The UCLA Bruins have finally snapped their losing streak. Taking down their first Big Ten opponent of the season, head coach DeShaun Foster and UCLA topped a talented Rutgers team 35-32.

Scoring a season-high 21 points in the first half, the Bruins offense looked markedly more dynamic in the much-needed win. Starting the game strong with an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, UCLA set the tone early.

In an explosive performance by quarterback Ethan Garbers, the Bruins signal-caller topped 400 total yards, finishing with 32/38 passing, 383 yards through the air, and five total touchdowns.

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s struggling offense found a rhythm and created a solid framework for the Bruins going forward. Able to finally establish the run, the Bruins rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown.

UCLA’s defense played characteristically well and showcased what this Bruins team is capable of doing when firing on all cylinders.

Leading by nine heading into the fourth quarter, Foster and the Bruins closed out the game and held on for the win.

For Foster, he earns his first win in the Big Ten and breathes life back into a program in desperate need of a boost. The Bruins look to continue their win streak at Nebraska in two weeks’ time.

UCLA Bruins rank near bottom of latest Big Ten ranking

The Fox Sports ranking was not kind of the sliding Bruins.

The UCLA Bruins football season has been one of disappointment. Dead last in the Big Ten standings at 0-4, the 1-5 Bruins have been a consistent under-performer in their first season with the conference.

Fresh off a deflating loss to Minnesota, the Bruins look to reset against a scrappy Rutgers program this Saturday.

This week, Michael Cohen of Fox Sports has the Bruins next to last in his latest Big Ten ranking. Only ranking above 1-5 Purdue, the Bruins are an unfortunate “circled-win” on many Big Ten teams’ schedules.

Following UCLA’s latest loss, Cohen writes, “The Bruins’ defense surrendered a seven-play, 61-yard scoring drive in the final two minutes as Minnesota notched the winning score on a short pass from quarterback Max Brosmer to tailback Darius Taylor. Head coach DeShaun Foster’s team has failed to score 20 points in any game this season and now ranks 133rd in scoring at just 14.5 points per game.”

In desperate need of a win and a morale-booster, head coach DeShaun Foster and the Bruins head to New Brunswick, New Jersey, in hopes of finding answers to their Big Ten woes.

Should Panthers consider trading Chuba Hubbard when Jonathon Brooks returns?

Panthers HC Dave Canales was asked if the team might have to consider trading Chuba Hubbard when Jonathon Brooks hits the backfield.

Will there soon be too many cats in the Carolina Panthers’ backfield?

On Monday, head coach Dave Canales provided quite an exciting update on 2024 second-round pick Jonathon Brooks. He told reporters that the 21-year-old running back, who has started his rookie campaign on the reserve/non-football injury list, is expected to hit the practice field starting this week.

Brooks, due to the ACL tear he sustained last November, has yet to receive the full green light as a pro. Despite the initial belief from April that he’d be ready for training camp, the youngster remained sidelined during both spring and summer workouts.

But now that Brooks has taken another real step towards his NFL debut, will his presence crowd the running back room? Will the organization’s desire to see him result in a trade, say, of Chuba Hubbard?

Canales was asked that this afternoon.

“Again, we just gotta get Jonathon out there, see where he’s at, take a good evaluation of him playing football, moving around with confidence and then we’ll make those decisions,” he replied.

Those decisions would be a lot easier if not for the recent success of Hubbard, who is currently the NFL’s third-leading rusher. Much of that production has come over the last four weeks, where the fourth-year back rushed for 407 yards and two scores.

Aside from the numbers, Hubbard’s also been the engine in Carolina’s pursuit of an identity on offense. He has helped justify the front office’s huge investments along their offensive line and has led the charge in establishing the run—one of the main focuses for Canales in his first season.

So, do you just trade that away?

No, of course you don’t.

Perhaps a deal makes sense at the most superficial level. Not only was Brooks the first running back selected in the 2024 draft, but the Panthers coveted him enough to trade up the board to solidify that honor.

Oh, and Hubbard is a free agent at season’s end. Why not ship him off for something if the future belongs to Brooks?

Well, for one, the Panthers might not get anything worthwhile in return. Although Hubbard is playing the best ball of his career, good luck finding a team who will hand over a real asset for a veteran running back in today’s NFL.

Heck, look at what happened with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just yesterday. Against a normally tough New Orleans Saints defense, 2023 undrafted free agent Sean Tucker ran for 136 yards while 2024 fourth-rounder Bucky Irving ran for 81.

Good rushers don’t grow on trees, but they’re not exactly low in stock either.

Plus, what Carolina could possibly get in exchange for Hubbard probably won’t be worth the contradiction that would follow.

Canales—since the spring—has heralded Hubbard for his attitude, his approach and his leadership. In fact, he praised him again today.

“It’s just the way that he comes to work every day with the focus and mentality to get better. He truly has that mentality that I love, that I wish we can all grow to as a group,” Canales said of Hubbard stepping up in 2024. “And he improves—every day in practice, game to game in the different ways he presses runs or picks up protection or runs certain routes. He’s in this relentless pursuit to find his best, and that’s the leadership that we need.”

In the grander scheme of Carolina’s current situation, Canales is out to establish a much-needed culture—not just the run.

It’s what pushed him to make the tough decision to throw in veteran quarterback Andy Dalton for Bryce Young, who simply wasn’t up to snuff. Although the Panthers would love to see the 2023 No. 1 overall pick eventually “get it,” his play was dragging down the work of his teammates.

Selling off Hubbard, a player who the head coach firmly believes has done everything the right way, would be like selling off a piece of the team’s soul. What kind of message would that send to rest of the locker room?

Instead of looking at Brooks’ impending return as an urgent problem, look at it as a good one. After all, isn’t having two capable running backs better than having one?

That’s a strategy that certainly works in the NFL, and one that this very franchise has its own memorable history with. Remember when Stephen Davis and DeShaun Foster helped run Carolina to Super Bowl XXXVIII? And remember when Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams smashed and dashed their way through a handful of seasons together?

These Panthers will not make this year’s Super Bowl like Davis and Foster did. They won’t even be as competitive as most of those teams Stewart and Williams were on.

They do, however, have a culture to build—and Hubbard is a big part of it.
