Will Derrius Guice be a productive fantasy football player in Week 11?

Guice is returning to the field on Sunday after missing the first nine games with an injury, but will he be able to put up fantasy numbers?

Are you hindered by one of the last major bye weeks in fantasy football this week? Are you in desperate need of a fill-in running back, and happened to miss out on Atlanta’s Brian Hill on the waiver wire?

It’s possible that Washington’s Derrius Guice is a solution for you, but make sure that you know he is a very high-risk option if you were to stick him in your starting lineup. However, if things were to pan out, Guice could help you to a Week 11 victory. Let’s take a look at some Pros and Cons for this play.

Pros:

  • Guice is coming off of the Injured Reserve, so he has fresh legs.
  • The Redskins have heavily emphasized the running game since Bill Callahan took over, leading to the fantasy success of Adrian Peterson.
  • The team said on Wednesday that Guice looks to be filling a nice role in the backfield, catching passes on checkdown routes and offering a change of pace from Peterson.
  • Though he’s barely seen the field in his career due to injury, we’ve seen in the preseason — and his time at LSU — that Guice has a unique explosion that can be deadly when he gets into the open field.

Cons:

  • Guice hasn’t seen any live-game action since Week 1 when he tore his meniscus, and he was held out of his entire rookie season with a torn ACL. Rust is a real factor.
  • The Redskins’ offense is abysmal, and they’ve currently gone 3-straight games without scoring a touchdown, so any fantasy points would likely have to rely on the volume of work unless Washington is able to end that streak.
  • AP clearly holds the RB1 role for the Redskins, and they don’t seem to be willing to go away from him any time soon.
  • Rookie QB Dwayne Haskins will be making his second career start, so the offense might continue in its stagnant nature.
  • We just haven’t seen Guice be an effective fantasy RB as of yet. The skills are there, but until we witness some production, it might be hard to start him with confidence.
  • The New York Jets have the second-best defense against the run in the NFL, allowing just 81.9 yards per game on the ground.

Has your confidence been boosted, or did this have the opposite effect? That’s understandable. The truth is that Guice offers an extremely high risk-reward option this week, but we don’t really know how high his ceiling is. I wouldn’t be blown away to see him score 12 points in PPR scoring, but the same would hold true if he put up 3 points — we just don’t know. If you are absolutely desperate, there are worse options on the board.

Derrius Guice sounds headed for a big workload this weekend

The Redskins sound ready to unleash Derrius Guice again.

It sure sounds like Washington Resdskins interim coach Bill Callahan isn’t going to shy away from Derrius Guice this weekend.

There has been some question as to how Callahan might balance the workload between Guice and veteran Adrian Peterson.

But an ongoing issue for pass-catching back Chris Thompson might give Callahan some leeway. The interim coach told reporters at the podium Wednesday that Guice was starting to make waves as a receiver before his latest injury.

In other words, it doesn’t sound like there will be much of a pitch count for Guice as he gets back up to game speed, nor is his injury history costing him snaps.

More hints at a big workload:

Guice last played on September 8, carrying 10 times after missing his rookie season. His big return in Week 11 comes against a strong New York Jets defensive front.

Derrius Guice can alleviate the on-going loss of Chris Thompson

Derrius Guice is coming back at just the right time for the Washington Redskins.

As the team enters Week 11, news has come out early this week that running back Chris Thompson is still dealing with a toe injury, and all signs are point towards him sitting out yet another game. That’s an injury that has been pretty detrimental to the Redskins over the past month or so, but it will be less harmful now that Guice is set to go.

Now, with the team less reliant on Adrian Peterson, and AP alone, the offense can start to expand once again as rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins feels comfortable. When talking to the media on Wednesday, coach Bill Callahan said that he is excited about the prospects that Guice brings out of the backfield, though he doesn’t yet know how the workload will be split between him and AP.

The team hopes to know more about the status of Thompson as the week goes on, but things aren’t looking up in that department at the moment. However, with Guice’s long-awaited return to the field, it may not be as detrimental to success as it once was.

Bill Callahan says he wouldn’t make Adrian Peterson or Derrius Guice inactive

The interim coach made a point about his RB room.

Crisis avoided.

Earlier this year, then-Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden caused some apparent controversy by making veteran running back Adrian Peterson inactive while Derrius Guice got the nod at running back.

A head coach stashing one running back because of his similarities with another for the sake of additional versatility at other positions — especially on special teams — isn’t all that outlandish. But it made a big wave anyway because of Peterson’s status and his strong season the year prior.

Now with Guice finally healthy, interim coach Bill Callahan has to deal with the same hurdle.

He’s apparently leaped over it with ease:

With how this season has unfolded, why rock the boat?

Projection-wise, Peterson figures to be the workhorse still while Guice gets his legs back under him. Even when Guice is full-go it doesn’t seem like the interim coach wants to take any big risks.

Derrius Guice is “itching” to go for Week 11 against the NY Jets

Guice has finally been removed from the IR and will take the field this week as the team prepares to host the Jets.

Week 11 is finally here, and the Washington Redskins get one of their best players back on the field at long last. After sitting out the last eight games, second-year running back Derrius Guice is ready to get back in the mix.

While Adrian Peterson has once again been great in Guice’s absence, it will be a two-man show going forward as the team looks to split the workload between them, though they haven’t yet said who will see the brunt of the load.

Guice has yet to play a full game in his young career, as two consecutive knee injuries have kept him sidelined.

Fantasy football waiver wire targets after Week 10: The fallout of the Devonta Freeman injury

Picking up the pieces after injuries to Devonta Freeman and Austin Hooper.

There aren’t a bounty of strong options on the waiver wire this week. Hopefully you were busy on the trade market, and hopefully there will be more movement on the wire to come. With an injuries to Detroit Lions running back Ty Johnson and Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman, there are some waiver wire options worth targeting, and they could even be viable starters for a few weeks.

There will be two situations worth monitoring for next week. San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle and Atlanta Falcons tight end Austin Hooper are both dealing with injuries. Their backups may become fill-in options.

Here are the waiver wire targets after Week 10 and for Week 11.

5. Falcons and 49ers tight ends

Two of the best tight ends in fantasy football are dealing with injuries. The Falcons’ pecking order is a puzzle. It’s entirely possible they turn to their receivers, if Hooper misses time. But maybe tight end Luke Stocker can step up.

It’s a similar story in San Francisco, with Kittle set to miss Monday night’s game in Week 10. We’ll get a chance to see if second-year pro Ross Dwelley can step out without Kittle. Dwelley might be rostering if he plays well, just in case Kittle misses additional time.

4. J.D. McKissic, RB, Detroit Lions

ESPN: 15%. Yahoo! 21%.

When Ty Johnson left the game with a concussion, McKissic took over. The Chicago Bears made life difficult for McKissic, even with an increased ownership of touches. He finished the game with 10 carries for 36 yards and six receptions for 19 yards. In PPR formats, McKissic’s value would be on the rise if Johnson misses time.

3. Brian Hill, RB, Atlanta Falcons

ESPN: .3%. Yahoo! 3%.

It’s unclear how long Devonta Freeman could be out, but he seems to be dealing with an ankle issue. That gave life to Hill, who finished with 20 carries for 61 yards and a 10-yard touchdown reception in Week 10. He may end up being the workhorse back in Atlanta for a few weeks.

2. Darius Slayton, WR, New York Giants

ESPN: 12%. Yahoo! 10%.

Slayton had been quietly putting together a solid season until the last three weeks when he’s put up four touchdowns, with two in Week 10 and two in Week 8. He’s probably not a plug-and-play starter, but has proven a reliable red-zone threat. This season, he has 45 receptions, 394 yards and five touchdowns. He could be worth a roster spot.

1. Derrius Guice, RB, Washington Redskins

ESPN: 38%. Yahoo! 37%.

Before suffering an injury, he was the team’s starting running back, with the Redskins benching Adrian Peterson. Somehow, the ageless wonder has gone on to have a productive season. But with Guice coming back, it’s easy to imagine him splitting carries, at least. The Redskins will want to see what Guice can contribute as they continue to play for the future. He should return to being a big part of their offense.
