The NFL requires every team to trim its roster down to 85 players by Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. ET, down from the current limit of 90 players. The Rams are wasting no time making their necessary moves, releasing five players on Monday.
According to the transaction wire, the Rams released the following players:
- K Austin MacGinnis
- LB Derrick Moncrief
- OT Ryan Pope
- DL Max Roberts
- DL George Silvanic
No big surprises here, and there shouldn’t be considering the Rams still have 85 players on the roster. MacGinnis wasn’t going to beat out Matt Gay for the kicking job, but this further cements Gay’s place as the starter.
Moncrief struggled on Saturday against the Chargers and plays a position with excellent depth, so making the team was going to be difficult
Pope was just signed last week to add tackle depth but wound up playing just one special teams snap in the preseason opener. The Rams only used seven offensive linemen in that game.
Roberts and Silvanic also play positions that the Rams are deep at and neither player really stood out against Los Angeles in the preseason opener.
