Rams cut 5 players, including Derrick Moncrief and George Silvanic

The Rams have begun trimming their roster, cutting five players today before Tuesday’s deadline.

The NFL requires every team to trim its roster down to 85 players by Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. ET, down from the current limit of 90 players. The Rams are wasting no time making their necessary moves, releasing five players on Monday.

According to the transaction wire, the Rams released the following players:

  • K Austin MacGinnis
  • LB Derrick Moncrief
  • OT Ryan Pope
  • DL Max Roberts
  • DL George Silvanic

No big surprises here, and there shouldn’t be considering the Rams still have 85 players on the roster. MacGinnis wasn’t going to beat out Matt Gay for the kicking job, but this further cements Gay’s place as the starter.

Moncrief struggled on Saturday against the Chargers and plays a position with excellent depth, so making the team was going to be difficult

Pope was just signed last week to add tackle depth but wound up playing just one special teams snap in the preseason opener. The Rams only used seven offensive linemen in that game.

Roberts and Silvanic also play positions that the Rams are deep at and neither player really stood out against Los Angeles in the preseason opener.

Rams sign LB Derrick Moncrief to reserve/futures contract

The Los Angeles Rams will keep Derrick Moncrief around for the offseason.

The Los Angeles Rams announced a roster move on Friday, signing rookie linebacker Derrick Moncrief to a reserve/futures contract. Moncrief was signed by the Rams as an undrafted free agent last year and spent most of the season on the practice squad.

He was promoted to the active roster in November and appeared in one game, playing 15 special teams snaps against the Dolphins. He reverted to the practice squad and did not play the rest of the season.

Moncrief is the 17th player the Rams have signed to a reserve/futures contract this offseason. It allows them to keep him around throughout offseason to evaluate him further during the summer.

Rams call up LB Derrick Moncrief from practice squad for Dolphins game

The Rams filled their last roster spot by activating Derrick Moncrief from the practice squad.

The Los Angeles Rams had two open roster spots this week after cutting Samuel Sloman and placing Terrell Burgess on injured reserve, but they didn’t bring in any outside players to fill those vacancies. Instead, they activated A’Shawn Robinson from the NFI list Friday and called up Derrick Moncrief from the practice squad Saturday.

Moncrief is now eligible to play against the Dolphins on Sunday, though it remains to be seen if he will be active for the game.

Moncrief went undrafted in 2017 but spent three seasons in the CFL. He was signed and waived by the Raiders this offseason, and the Rams signed him in August. He was waived by the Rams as part of final roster cuts, but they brought him back on the practice squad.

He was a CFL All-Star in 2019 with 73 tackles for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Former Auburn linebacker waived by Los Angeles Rams

The former Auburn linebacker was one of 17 cuts by the Los Angeles Rams on Friday.

The cuts on NFL rosters are coming as the deadline for final roster comes on Saturday.

One former Auburn Tiger, Derrick Moncrief, was one of the cuts as he was let go by the Los Angeles Rams on Friday.

Moncrief made 27 total tackles (14 solo) with a forced fumble and one pass broken up during his only year on the Plains in 2014. He transferred to Oklahoma State for his senior season.

He played three seasons for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL from 2017-19.
