Five takeaways from Auburn’s victory over Western Kentucky

Auburn’s two-headed rushing attack grows stronger and coach Williams proves his case in these five takeaways:

It’s another week and another win for the Auburn Tigers.

The Tigers closed out their season on home turf on Saturday against Western Kentucky in a 41-17 win, but the team will still head away from home for one last game against the Alabama Crimson Tide next week. While improbable, a win against the Tide would have Auburn bowl eligible when the prospect looked meek for Auburn just weeks prior. The team rode a strong rushing attack and more excellent coaching from Cadillac Williams to a victory on the Plains before the rivalry showdown.

Here are five takeaways from Auburn’s second consecutive victory:

Social media buzz ahead of Auburn’s final home game of 2022 season

Auburn fans are chomping at the bit to cheer on their favorite team at Jordan-Hare Stadium one final time this season.

The Auburn Tigers welcome Western Kentucky to Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday for the final home game of the 2022 season.

Not only will Auburn fans get one last chance to see their favorite team play at home this season, but it will be the final time that 24 seniors will wear their home jerseys. Several of those seniors include [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag], [autotag]Owen Pappoe[/autotag], and [autotag]John Samuel Shenker[/autotag], who will serve as captains for Saturday’s game.

Auburn fans are excited about Saturday’s game and have shared their anticipation on Twitter.

Here are the best pregame tweets from Auburn fans ahead of Saturdayโ€™s game with Western Kentucky.

The one factor that could convince Lane Kiffin to take the Auburn job

Auburn has plenty of advantages, but which factor could convince Lane Kiffin to bolt to the Plains?

Over the last two weeks, Ole Miss head coach [autotag]Lane Kiffin[/autotag] has been a popular name among Auburn fans as the replacement for Bryan Harsin, who was relieved of his duties on Oct. 31.

Auburn athletic director [autotag]John Cohen[/autotag] and Auburn University President [autotag]Dr. Christopher Roberts[/autotag] has kept their list close to heart, but all signs point to Kiffin being the favorite to take the job.

Why would he leave Ole Miss? Well, there are plenty of reasons.

Auburn has a better track record of success in football than Ole Miss with six SEC West crowns as opposed to the Rebels’ zero. Auburn has also recently hired a new athletic director who has a reputation for allowing his coaches to have more freedom than most. Mix it with the new football-only facility that just opened, and Auburn becomes a top destination for any potential hire.

However, one ESPN analyst believes there is one factor that truly separates Auburn from Ole Miss, and that is the recent build-up of Auburn’s NIL collective, “On to Victory.

ESPN senior writer Chris Low recently tweeted his thoughts on the potential of Kiffin leaving Oxford for the Plains. He says that the shifting landscape of College Football appears to be working in favor of the Tigers.

“The overriding reason Lane Kiffin would leave Ole Miss for Auburn is the hefty NIL fund that Auburn has built,” Low said in a recent tweet. “In the NIL world, that kind of cash is the key to sustaining success at a high level, both in attracting high school talent and keeping players from transferring.”

In a follow-up tweet, Low says that Kiffin is proud of the success that he has built at Ole Miss, but could easily see Auburn’s outstanding efforts in NIL being a deciding factor for accepting a potential offer.

“One thing I know about Lane Kiffin if he is indeed the choice at Auburn is that he does not do anything impulsively,” Low said. “He would examine everything, all factors, and I do believe NIL would be the deciding factor IF he were to leave.”

On to Victory’s objective is to expand NIL opportunities for Auburn Student-Athletes according to its website. Currently, three Auburn athletes are a part of On3’s NIL 100, including [autotag]Tank Bigsby[/autotag] and [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag], who ranks No. 87 and No. 93 respectively.

Derick Hall makes leadership award semifinals list

Hall is one of 20 semifinalists and one of two SEC representatives.

Edge rusher [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag] has been nominated for an award that showcases his talents on and off the field.

Hall was nominated as a semifinalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award, which focuses on leadership skills on and off the football field. Hall is one of 20 semifinalists for the award.

Hall is one of only two SEC semifinalists for the award, as Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker is the only other representative for the conference. The winner of the award receives a $10,000 donation in their name to the school’s scholarship fund, so there is certainly an incentive to win the award aside from pure prestige.

As a senior, Hall has been with the team for four years and has started for three of them. As such, there has been plenty of time for him to establish his leadership across the defense and the team as a whole.

The semifinalist list will be narrowed down to three players on Dec. 14 and the winner will be announced two months later on Feb. 23, 2023.

Wooden among SEC Players of the Week following Texas A&M game

Wooden’s strip-sack in the 4th quarter of Auburn’s win over Texas A&M set up the Tigers’ final score of the game.

[autotag]Colby Wooden[/autotag] may not have recorded the most tackles in Auburn’s win over Texas A&M last Saturday, but he still had a memorable night.

It was Wooden who forced a strip sack of Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman with six minutes to go in the 4th quarter of Auburn’s win, which set up an [autotag]Evan McPherson[/autotag] field goal that would result in the game-clinching score.

Because of this, Wooden has earned SEC co-defensive lineman of the week for week 11, joining Alabama‘s Byron Young in claiming the honor.

On the season, Wooden has made 42 stops, with his best game coming two weeks ago against Arkansas, when he made eight tackles with one sack. He is second on the team in sacks with six, one behind [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag]. His total is the sixth-highest in the SEC.

According to Pro Football Focus, Wooden has been on the field for 532 snaps this season, and holds a 74.6% grade, with a pass rush grade of 76.9%.

Auburn defensive end makes Rotary Lombardi midseason watchlist

Derick Hall is recognized but has some tough competition.

Auburn defensive end [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag]’s work this season has been noticed.

Hall was one of 90 college football players to be put on the Rotary Lombardi watchlist on Monday. The Rotary Lombardi award is given every year to college football’s best lineman โ€” offensive or defensive. That means that any player who plays on the line of scrimmage generally has a shot to win the award, meaning that Hall is surrounded by defensive linemen, offensive linemen, edge rushers and even linebackers.

So far, Hall has amassed 27 solo tackles, four sacks, a forced fumble and an interception. He’ll have lots of strong competition for this award given just how many people are eligible, though โ€” the SEC has the most eligible players in any conference with 15, and that includes the likes of Alabama’s Will Anderson, Jr. and Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, both who are considered among the best at their positions for 2022. Regardless, Hall’s inclusion on the list is a reminder of his prowess and should do well to signify that his draft stock is on the mark.

The Auburn Tigers are on bye this week, but Hall will be back in action with the team when it faces off against Arkansas on Oct. 29.

Defensive keys to beating the Georgia Bulldogs

It’s gonna be tough, but here are four ways the Tigers can upset the Bulldogs in Athens:

Wrestling great Ric Flair couldn’t have put it any better โ€” to be the man, you have to beat the man. This Saturday, the Auburn Tigers are set to meet the “man” away from home for one of college football’s oldest showdowns.

Sure, Georgia isn’t number one in the nation (Alabama is), but the Bulldogs are the defending national champions who, notably, have defeated Auburn eight of the last nine times the two have played. It’s going to be very tough for the Tigers to pull it off, but as longtime fans would tell you, anything is possible in a series like this,

Check out these four defensive keys that can prevent turning the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry into the Deep South’s Newest Blowout down below:

Auburn to be without Eku Leota for remainder of season

The news is a crushing blow to the Auburn defense.

Auburn EDGE rusher [autotag]Eku Leota[/autotag] exited Saturday’s 21-17 loss to LSU in the first quarter due to a suspected injury. Reports surfaced that Leota appeared on the sidelines later in the game with a sling on his right arm.

Monday, head coach [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag] shared the news that Leota will have surgery to repair an injured pectoral muscle, which will cause him to miss the remainder of the 2022 season.

“Eku is a big loss,” Harsin said during his weekly press conference on Monday afternoon. “He’s an emotional leader and one of the top guys on this team.”

Leota’s season ends with 17 recorded tackles, five of those were for a loss. He recorded one stop in the LSU game when he tackled Tiger quarterback Jayden Daniels for no gain on third down in the 1st quarter.

The Northwestern transfer was a key component of the pass rush. He made at least one stop behind the line of scrimmage in every game except the LSU game. He made a season-high two tackles for loss in the 41-12 loss to Penn State on Sept. 17 at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

His 5.0 tackles for loss was second on the team behind [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag], who has made 7.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage. Auburn will now have to rely on Hall, [autotag]Colby Wooden[/autotag], and [autotag]Marcus Harris[/autotag] to make stops behind the line of scrimmage for the rest of the season.

Auburn is ready to ‘turn the page’ after suffering tough loss to LSU

Auburn players felt disappointed after losing to rival LSU on Saturday night. Now, all of their focus is on next week’s road game at No. 1 Georgia.

Auburn found confidence early in their game with LSU.

Quarterback [autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag] led Auburn to a 17-0 first-half lead by setting the tone with two touchdown passes, including a 53-yard pass to [autotag]Ja’varrius Johnson[/autotag] to put Auburn on the board in the 1st quarter.

However, LSU scored 21 unanswered points over the final three quarters to ultimately pull away and stun Auburn, 21-17 at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Auburn failed to reach the end zone in the second half for the second straight week, they also committed four turnovers which allowed LSU to get back into the game, and ultimately win. Auburn players were clearly disappointed after the loss.

โ€œIt is frustrating. We just have to do a better job on our end and take care of the ball,” linebacker [autotag]Owen Pappoe[/autotag] said following Saturday’s loss. “We canโ€™t have too many turnovers like that because that can really hurt us. We just have to be better all around.โ€

While the loss has players feeling agitated, they understand that they have to keep building a great locker room environment in order to ultimately improve and earn more wins.

โ€œThe biggest thing is just sticking together,” EDGE rusher [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag] said. “We knew we had that game and there were a couple of opportunities. We gave that game away. We have to take care of the ball better and on defense and we have to get more stops obviously.โ€

The good news is, it appears that most players are already shaking off the loss to LSU, and are ready to get back to the practice field. Next on the slate is the first road game of the season at No. 1 Georgia, and Auburn will need to enter that game with clear minds.

โ€œWe’re flipping the page tomorrow,” tight end [autotag]John Samuel Shenker[/autotag] said. “We want to be 2-0 in the SEC, and we are not, we are 1-1. But it’s still early in the season and we’re going to get to work tomorrow, get ready for Georgia, and just be a better team next Saturday.โ€

Auburn travels to Georgia next Saturday for the 127th renewal of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry. Kickoff from Sanford Stadium in Athens is set for 2:30 p.m. CT, and will be broadcasted live on CBS.
