Seahawks cancel team meetings in honor of George Floyd memorial

The Seattle Seahawks have cancelled their regular, virtual team meeting on Thursday in honor of the George Floyd memorial service.

The Seattle Seahawks are among the NFL teams cancelling their team meetings on Thursday in honor of the George Floyd memorial, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and later confirmed by Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times.

The memorial is taking place on Thursday, June 4 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Floyd was killed by Derek Chauvin, a police officer who held his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes while Floyd, in handcuffs, cried for help and exclaimed that he could not breathe.

The incident has caused peaceful protests around the country, reigniting the Black Lives Matter movement in a way that has not been seen since Colin Kaepernick first knelt during the national anthem in order to protest police brutality against people of color.

Many Seahawks players and coaches, including Pete Carroll, Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner, have spoken up about the racial injustice in this country, and the way the team has worked together to have open and honest conversations amongst each other.

“I’m grateful we have an organization that understands,” Wagner told Seattle media on Monday. “It’s hard for me to focus on football or focus on anything other than what’s going on. If you looked up from whatever you were doing, you saw what was happening.”

The Seahawks will resume their regular virtual team meetings on Friday, with the aim of getting onto the practice field for training camp sometime in July.

“We stand with Seattle, and every community in uniting to help heal our society and overcome the hurt, anger and frustration through peaceful protests and acts of togetherness,” read the press release. “With that, to further aid in the solution the Seahawks players will begin the process of determining recipients for grants from the Seahawks Players Equality & Justice for All Action Fund in the amount of $500k.”

All eyes are still on the aftermath of the incident and what organizations in power will do to bring about change.

“… “Floyd has done these kind of things over the last 20 years.”

Mayweather paid for the funeral of former opponent Genaro Hernandez in 2011, ESPN reported. Hernandez, a former titleholder, died from cancer.

DK Metcalf speaks on George Floyd’s death and aftermath via Twitter

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf spoke out on Twitter about George Floyd’s death and the emotional aftermath of the situation.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf took to Twitter on Saturday and shared his thoughts on George Floyd’s mistreatment and death at the hands of police officer Derek Chauvin and the emotional aftermath of the situation.

In a deep and despondent voice, Metcalf expressed his fears that African Americans close to him could also become victims of racial abuse.

“I watched the George Floyd video a couple days ago, and the one thing that kept sticking out to me was, I have family, friends, brothers that look like George Floyd,” Metcalf stated. “To think being black in America can lead to that, it scares me. It breaks my heart that . . . my uncles could go out into the world today and that could be them.”

Metcalf felt the need to speak out on this issue to show his desire for justice.

“I wanted to say something because if I didn’t, then I felt like I would be supporting it, and that’s not right,” he said. “That’s totally not right, and . . . I’m just at a loss for words now.”

He also urged the African American community to stay strong and continue to push for equality, unity, and peace, referencing their ancestors in the civil rights movement.

“Black community, we just got to continue to fight and stick together man, because our ancestors have been through tough times and they taught us how to do it,” Metcalf said. “So let’s just continue to stick together.”
