Raiders officially release QB Derek Carr after 9 seasons

QB Derek Carr has been officially released by Raiders

It’s over. Officially. After nine seasons as the Raiders starting quarterback, the Raiders have cut ties with Derek Carr.

The team made the expected move official today, just prior to the deadline at which point his contract would have triggered another $40 million in guaranteed money.

As it stands, the team is left with just over $5 million in dead money, while saving around $30 million on the cap this season. And Carr becomes a free agent immediately.

The Raiders had hoped to trade Carr, but after reportedly receiving an offer from the Saints that would have asked Carr to take a pay cut, he chose not to waive the no-trade clause in his contract, forcing the Raiders to make the only move they could make considering they had no intention of keeping him.

With the Raiders out of playoff contention, head coach Josh McDaniels benched Carr for the final two games of last season to avoid the risk of an injury against which his contract would have been guaranteed.

Report: Derek Carr to be released by Raiders after refusing trade

Derek Carr reportedly to refuse any trade and will be released by Raiders.

When the Raiders signed Derek Carr to an extension prior to last season, they gave him a no-trade clause in his contract. And Carr will be exercising that clause and therefore will be released according to NFL media’s Ian Rapoport.

Obviously the Raiders had hoped not to simply let Carr go for nothing, but after several days meeting in New Orleans with Saints brass, a deal is not forthcoming.

Even with the Raiders said to be asking for as little as a third round pick for Carr, the Saints were the only team to show any interest in Carr. The Saints wanted Carr to take a pay cut, according to The Athletic, and Carr balked at that.

The Raiders have until Wednesday February 15 to officially release Carr before his contract becomes guaranteed.

There are several teams that are looking for a quarterback right now, but if any of them thought Carr was the answer, they wouldn’t have sat back and let the Saints have the only crack at offering up a trade for him. So, it may not be so easy for Carr to get the kind of deal he seems to hope/think he can on the open market.

Though you’d have to think if it turns out he can’t do better than the offer he got from the Saints, he may just turn around and head back to New Orleans anyway.

Report: Raiders ‘modest’ asking price in trade for Derek Carr

Derek Carr could reportedly be had for as little as 3rd round pick

Today the first news has emerged of Derek Carr meeting with a team. He is heading to New Orleans to meet with the Saints. Though reports had the Raiders not allowing Carr’s camp to meet with a team before trade terms had been agreed upon, most reports say the two sides have yet to agree to terms.

What might compensation look like for Carr? According to sources close to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Raiders aren’t asking much. Specifically the thinking is that a third round pick could get a deal done.

Carr would have to agree to any trade, thus waiving his no-trade clause. But if the Saints can swing it, there’s a lot for him to like about it that could have him doing what he can to make it work.

The Saints have an outstanding team in place, suggesting they are a steady hand at quarterback away from being contenders. They also play in a dome in the south.

If Carr wants to make it work, he may have to work with the Saints on his contract as they are around $60 million OVER the cap as of now.

Meanwhile for the Raiders, getting something is better than nothing which is what they’d be looking at should they simply cut Carr. And the Saints don’t want to compete for Carr on the open market, and a third round pick is a small price to pay for that.
