Charles Woodson speaks on how Derek Carr’s Raiders career ended ‘it’s not unique’

Charles Woodson on Derek Carr Raiders split: “It’s not unique. The business gets everybody at some point. At this point it caught up with him.”

There aren’t many players in the world who can say they played at least the first eight years of their career with the Raiders only to continue their career elsewhere. Derek Carr is one of those people. But so too is Charles Woodson.

Woodson was drafted by the Raiders with the fourth overall pick in 1998 and played eight seasons with the Raiders, at which point the once Defensive Rookie of the Year, four-time Pro Bowler, and one-time All Pro was allowed to leave to sign elsewhere.

For that reason, Woodson is one of the few people on this planet who could lend the ideal perspective to how things ended between Derek Carr and the Raiders.

So, I asked him.

“It’s not unique. The business gets everybody at some point. At this point it caught up with him,” Woodson said of how the Raiders ended things with Carr.

Woodson understands why the Carr camp as well as his fans feel like the nine-year pro was treated unfairly.

“I think with Derek, everybody sees what he’s gone through as a player, from the amount of head coaches he’s gone through, the amount of offensive coordinators he’s been through, the year they had last year (2021) with all the off the field stuff and the way he handled it, he handled it with a lot of style and grace, and I think they look at it and say if anybody deserves a chance to leave his way it would be him. But, again, this business gets everybody at some point, and there’s never an exact science as to the way these things are handled.”

But ultimately, the team had decided it was time to move on. And the moment that decision was made, they had to move to ensure they protect their interests, regardless of any hurt feelings.

“I certainly understand people saying that he’s been wronged. But again, when you think about the fact that the way the contracts are, all that plays into the fact that if he plays and gets hurt, they’d be on the hook for [the guaranteed money in his contract], you kind of get it on both sides and that’s the business side of it that everybody always talks about.”

So, yeah, Derek Carr wanted to be a Raider for life. But after nine years and no playoff wins, the team decided it was time to turn the page.

And, sure, you’d like for him to get a honorable sendoff, saying his goodbyes to the fans or what have you, rather than the abrupt ending. But that’s just not realistic. It very rarely happens that way. And in this instance, it was simply not realistic.

I mean, we’re talking about $40 million in guaranteed money if he gets injured in two meaningless games with the Raiders having basically no shot at the playoffs, knowing they were moving on. There’s no room to factor feelings into that equation.

Report: If Raiders can’t find trade partner for Derek Carr by Feb 15, they will cut him

Report Raiders will cut Derek Carr if they are unable to find a trade partner by Feb 15

On the day Derek Carr and his agent both took to social media to make it *official* the nine-year veteran and the Raiders will be parting ways this offseason, the question has turned to how that parting will occur.

The two ways are obvious trade or cut.

The Raiders will make every attempt to make the trade happen, in the hopes of getting something in return.

This much was laid out by Derek’s brother David on NFL Network recently, when he said that Derek had “moved on” and he and the team would work together to find a trade partner.

The slight catch is that Carr has a no-trade clause in his contract, so if the teams making the offers are not teams for which he would like to play — or for whatever other reason — he can just refuse to sign off on it.

Some have taken that possibility to mean that the Raiders could potentially hold onto the disgruntled QB. According to Vic Tafur or the Athletitc, that ain’t happening. If a trade deal can’t be reached, Carr will be cut.

Carr’s contract becomes guaranteed on February 15 whieh is three days after the Super Bowl. The Raiders will not take on that money and will be moving on from him one way or the other by that date.

Keep in mind, the team can only agree to a deal with another team in trade. No pen can hit paper until the start of the league year in March.

NFL Roundup: Raiders want to trade QB Derek Carr by this deadline

According to Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, Carr’s salary for the next two years becomes fully guaranteed by February 15.

Last offseason we witnessed unprecedented player movement – at least as far as stars go. Russell Wilson was just one of the huge names who changed teams in a chaotic offseason that changed the landscape of the NFL. At least one Pro Bowl quarterback will be doing so this year.

The Raiders benched starter Derek Carr for their last two games of the season with the intention of keeping him healthy for a trade. Expect a move to be made soon, here. According to Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, Carr’s salary for the next two years becomes fully guaranteed by February 15.

Carr is a three-time Pro Bowler with a career 63-79 record.

As for teams who might be interested, we don’t have any word yet. However, it’s hard to figure out which ones need an upgrade at quarterback. That list should include the Commanders, Panthers, Saints and Jets.

The team that makes the most sense from where we’re sitting is the Colts. Since Andrew Luck’s surprise retirement Indy has trotted out several veteran QBs, none of whom have done well enough to stick around. Their latest attempt was with former league MVP Matt Ryan, who seems to have lost whatever was left of his former arm strength. Ryan played poorly enough to be benched this season and he’ll be a free agent in two months, so we can assume he will be out of the picture in 2023.

Anything can happen over the next 30 or so days, but our money is on Indianapolis.

Report: Washington could be interested in trade for Raiders QB Derek Carr

Derek Carr’s name is now being thrown into the mix for a potential trade candidate as Washington continues to search for their next QB.

[jwplayer tg1fzfGY]

So far, this has been the offseason of quarterback rumors for the Washington Football Team, as they search for their next guy that can instantly be plugged into the offense and help the team take the next step into relevance.

After Matthew Stafford was taken off the board this past weekend, Washington is left searching for the next guy, and a new rumor shows that it could be Las Vegas Raiders QB Derek Carr, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

It begins with the pursuit of Carr by multiple teams. Among the clubs that could get involved are the Colts, Bears, Patriots and the Washington Football Team. Depending on what happens in New Orleans, the Saints could be potential suitors as well.

All of this would be done by the Raiders so that they could try and get in on the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes, hoping to flip what they get in assets for Carr and use them to go towards Watson. So what would the Raiders be able to get for Carr?

Well, the report says that Washington would have to send two 1st-round picks to LV for Carr to get the job done, but that seems a bit steep, in my opinion, especially considering that Stafford realistically went for a first and a third, with only that second 1st-round pick thrown in to help with the Jared Goff salary dump.

We can’t be sure until something more concrete comes out, but we can now throw Carr’s name into the potential QB ‘X’ mix for Washington as well.
