The Denver Broncos selected Samford (FCS) wide receiver Montrell Washington in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft on Saturday (162nd overall). The pick was from a trade with the Houston Texans.

In 2021, Washington led the FBS is all-purpose yards with 1,938. He earned accolades as a 2021 Spring First Team All-SoCon player as a returner and fulfills general manager George Paton’s words to look for special teams contributors during the draft.

During his career, Washington caught 128 passes for 1,728 yards and rushed for 427 yards.

Washington (5-9, 181 pounds) will compete for the position of special teams returner for the Broncos.

Washington’s pro comparison is Tayvon Austin, wide receiver of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

According to NFL.com’s draft profile, what Washington may lack in size, he makes up for in speed.

Washington is another weapon that could be used for quarterback Russell Wilson, joining tight end Greg Dulcich who was drafted on Friday.

Next pick: 179th overall (fifth round, via a trade from the Indianapolis Colts on Friday night)

The Denver Broncos selected Oklahoma safety Delarrin Turner-Yell in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft on Saturday (152nd overall).

The third consecutive Broncos pick on the defensive side of the ball on day 3 of the 2022 NFL draft will be a good depth option for safeties Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson.

In 2021,  Turner-Yell recorded three interceptions and 52 tackles. He finished as a 2nd-team All-Big 12 defender. He also excelled off the field, earning an Academic All-Big 12 Second Team selection. After his career as a Sooner was over, he finished with 136 solo tackles, 190 total tackles, four interceptions and one forced fumble.

Turner-Yell (5-11, 200 pounds) adds size and strength to what is sure to be a tough defensive unit.

Turner-Yell ran an unofficial 4.47 40-yard dash at the combine, also participating in this year’s Senior Bowl. He was the 23rd-ranked safety out of 33 prospects according to DraftWire’s Luke Easterling, and 286th in DraftWire’s top 300 prospects.

According to NFL.com’s draft profile, Turner-Yell is quick to the ball and will bring the strength of a good NFL tackler.

He will hopefully be a good depth option for the safety position to help against the potent offenses of the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders. He joins Sooner teammate Nik Bonitto, who was the first Bronco selected in the NFL draft at 64th overall in the 2nd round.

Next pick: 162nd overall (fifth round)

The Denver Broncos selected Pittsburgh defensive back Demarri Mathis in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft on Saturday morning (115th overall). The pick was announced by NFL Chief Football Administrative Officer Dawn Aponte.

The third Broncos pick of the 2022 NFL draft is going to be a dynamic addition to their defensive backfield.

In 2021, Mathis had two interceptions in 2021 for the Panthers, returning one for a touchdown. A redshirt senior at Pitt after not playing in 2020, he finished his Pitt career with 66 solo tackles, five interceptions and 18 passes defended. Mathis was also a 2021 All-ACC Honorable Mention.

Mathis (5-11, 195 pounds) is right on par with the current NFL average size and weight of a cornerback (5-11, 193.4 pounds).

Mathis ran an unofficial 4.39 40-yard dash earlier this offseason, also participating in this year’s Senior Bowl. He was the 24th-ranked defensive back according to DraftWire’s Luke Easterling, and 188th in DraftWire’s top 300 prospects.

He will hopefully bring the some stability and tenacity to the current group of Broncos led by second-year Pat Surtain and free agent addition K’Waun Williams to help against the potent offenses of the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders.
