Jaguars make four practice squad moves including OL signing

The Jaguars added two players and let another two go from their practice squad Tuesday, signing offensive lineman Dennis Daley and long snapper Peter Bowden and releasing linebacker Tanner Muse and running back Jake Funk from the unit.

A 2019 sixth-round NFL draft pick by the Carolina Panthers who has since played with the Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals, Daley has appeared in 55 games and made 37 starts, 28 at tackle and nine at guard, over six seasons.

Bowden signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin this offseason and was waived during the preseason. He made 39 appearances with the Badgers in college.

Muse signed with Jacksonville’s practice squad in August after spending the preseason with the team. He was elevated to the active roster for three games and recorded one assisted special teams tackle against the Indianapolis Colts.

Funk joined the Jaguars’ practice squad on Oct. 1, was released from the unit last Tuesday and ultimately brought back on Wednesday. He was promoted to Jacksonville’s active roster in Weeks 7-8 but did not appear in either game.

Cardinals release veteran OL Dennis Daley a week ahead of roster cutdown

Daley played in only three games last season and wasn’t expected to make the roster.

The Arizona Cardinals must trim their offseason roster down to 53 players by next Tuesday. They announced a move on Monday. Reported earlier in the day by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team announced that offensive lineman Dennis Daley was released.

As a vested veteran, he immediately becomes a free agent and does not have to clear waivers.

Daley was unlikely to make the team and gets released a week before hundreds of players hit waivers and perhaps can find a team this week.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon had positive words for Daley, confirming the decision to release him before the team announced the move.

“I appreciate all his hard work,” he said. “He’s a warrior, man. He’s been fun to be around for the last year and a half.”

Daley signed a two-year, $3.2 million contract last offseason. He played in only three games last season, starting the year on injured reserve. He started one game at left guard, one of four players to start there last season. He has 37 career starts at guard and tackle.

His release comes just days after his false start penalty ended the Cardinals’ 21-13 preseason loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

We will preview every player on the Cardinals’ roster heading into training camp. This is about offensive lineman Dennis Daley.

Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2023, questions they face and their roster outlook.

Next up is offensive lineman Dennis Daley

Background

Daley enters his second year with the Cardinals and his sixth in the NFL. He entered the league in 2019, selected in the sixth round of the NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers.

He spent three seasons in Carolina before getting traded to the Tennessee Titans in 2022. He signed a two-year contract as a free agent in 2023 with the Cardinals.

He has played in 54 games in his career, starting 37 of them at guard and tackle. In 2022, he started 15 games at left tackle for Tennessee after Taylor Lewan was lost for the season.

4 surprise benchings for the Cardinals in Week 7

Four players we expected to see in the starting lineup on Sunday either only played special teams or did not play at all.

The Arizona Cardinals had a few lineup changes in Week 7 against the Seattle Seahawks. They had 66 offensive snaps and 60 defensive snaps, and we went over the snap counts.

There were four notable players we expected to see in the starting lineup who did not end up playing at all. All four were healthy and active for the game.

Let’s see who they were.

Cardinals activate OL Dennis Daley from IR, keep CB Garrett Willliams on NFI

Daley will make his 2023 debut for the Cardinals against the Rams.

The Arizona Cardinals some roster moves ahead of their game on Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams on the road. They activated offensive lineman Dennis Daley from injured reserve.

Daley will likely be active on Sunday and could see some playing time. The last three weeks, Trystan Colon has played a series or two at left guard.

Before Daley suffered an ankle in the preseason finale, he was the team’s No. 6 offensive lineman, being used as a jumbo tight end in some situations.

Rookie cornerback Garrett Williams, designated to return from the non-football injury reserve (NFI), was not activated. Neither was linebacker Myjai Sanders, who was designated to return on Thursday.

Both must be activated within three weeks of being designated to return or revert to the reserve for the rest of the season.

OL Dennis Daley remains on IR; Will Hernandez could be good to go vs. Bengals

The Arizona Cardinals did not activate OL Dennis Daley, suggesting that Will Hernandez could be ready to play vs. the Bengals.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a pair of roster moves on Saturday, elevating a pair of players from the practice squad to the active roster. What was notable was the roster move they did not make.

They did not activate offensive lineman Dennis Daley from injured reserve. He had been designated to return and practiced all week, getting limited work on Wednesday and Thursday and was a full participant on Friday.

Starting right guard Will Hernandez is officially questionable for the game with a back injury. With Daley remaining on IR, it suggests that Hernandez should be okay to play. Hernandez was limited on Thursday and did not practice on Friday.

The Cardinals only have nine offensive linemen on the roster after the release of Ilm Manning earlier in the week. Tackle Carter O’Donnell has not yet been active this season, so it would make sense that Hernandez was planning on playing, leaving Kelvin Beachum, Trystan Colon and Keith Ismael as the backups.

Teams must have eight offensive linemen active for games.

The Cardinals and Bengals kick off Sunday afternoon from State Farm Stadium at 1:05 p.m. Arizona time.

OL Dennis Daley, CB Garrett Williams designated to return, begin practicing

The Cardinals are getting reinforcements in practice this week. They have 21 days to be restored to the active roster.

The Arizona Cardinals get two players back to practice they have not had yet this season. They announced they designated rookie cornerback Garrett Williams and offensive lineman Dennis Daley to return to practice.

Williams is on the NFI (non-football injury) reserve and Daley is on injured reserve.

Both now are eligible to practice and can be activated to the 53-man roster at any point in the next 21 days.

The Cardinals released two cornerbacks and an offensive lineman on Monday, so it would appear that both will be activated this weekend and dress and potentially dress and play on Sunday when the Cardinals host the Cincinnati Bengals.

Williams was on NFI recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last October while in college. He was drafted by the Cardinals in the third round out of Syracuse.

Daley injured his ankle in the preseason finale.

The Cardinals did not designate outside linebacker Myjai Sanders or quarterback Kyler Murray to return. Sanders is on IR with a hand injury and Murray is on the PUP (physically unable to perform) reserve completing his recovery from his torn ACL last season.

If Daley or Williams is not activated to the 53-man roster within 21 days, they revert to the reserves they were on and must miss the remainder of the season.

Cardinals place OL Dennis Daley and LB Myjai Sanders on IR

Sanders, who injured his hand in training camp, and Daley, who hurt his ankle, must miss at least the first four games of the season.

The Arizona Cardinals made a pair of roster moves on Friday for injured players. They placed guard Dennis Daley and linebacker Myjai Sanders on injured reserve on Thursday, the team announced in a press release and on social media.

Daley injured his ankle in the Cardinals’ preseason finale on Saturday. Head coach Jonathan Gannon ruled him out of the season opener when he spoke to the media on Thursday.

He has now been ruled out for at least four weeks.

Daley in in his first season with the Cardinals after signing as a free agent in the offseason. During the preseason, he was basically their sixth offensive lineman, getting snaps as a tackle eligible when they played a jumbo formation.

Sanders injured his hand early in training camp and did not play in any of their preseason matchups.

The second-year outside linebacker must also miss at least the first four games of the season.

Cardinals had 3 notable injuries in preseason win over Vikings

O-linemen Jon Gaines and Dennis Daley, both expected to be on the 53-man roster, suffered injuries in the preseason finale.

The Arizona Cardinals finished the preseason with an 18-17 come-from-behind win over the Minnesota Vikings. In the game, they suffered three injuries of note.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon mentioned them after the game in his press conference.

2 Cardinals players kicked out of practice for fighting

OL Dennis Daley and DL L.J. Collier were both thrown out of Saturday’s practice after getting into a scuffle.

Training camp fights used to be the norm in the NFL. It has been a while since an Arizona Cardinals head coach tolerated them.

Jonathan Gannon doesn’t tolerate them.

“It’s a non-negotiable,” Gannon said Thursday, according to AZCardinals.com’s Darren Urban. “And why it’s a non-negotiable is because you get thrown out in a game for it.”

It came up in Saturday’s practice.

Gannon followed through.

When the team was running 11-on-11 goalline drills, offensive lineman Dennis Daley and defensive lineman L.J. Collier, both veteran free agent additions this offseason, had a scuffle after a play.

The result?

Both were thrown out and sent to the locker, just like they would be in a game.

Gannon preaches physicality and football violence, but that is different than fighting after a play. One is fierce competition when it is legal and encouraged. The other is unsportsmanlike conduct.

Other dustups might occur, but we will see whether Gannon has to toss anyone else during practice in the weeks to come.
