The COVID-19 pandemic has ravaged the sports landscape and has possibly put the 2020 NFL season in jeopardy, however, that has not stopped the Jacksonville Jaguars from their usual preparations for the season. As previously reported, they recently made some additions to their coaching staff with the hirings of ex-Jaguar players Tony Gilbert and Denard Robinson.

Gilbert, who was hired as the assistant linebackers coach, once played the position for the Jags from 2003-06 in a career spanning five years. Before that, however, he played at the University of Georgia, where he crossed passed with Doug Marrone who was an offensive line coach.

“I’ve been tracking Tony for a while,” Marrone said via Jaguars.com. “He started out in junior college and was able to get on at UCF and helped them with the linebackers. I really felt good about getting Tony on board here, and he’s excited to come.”

Robinson, who will be an offensive quality controls coach, is more known across the Jaguars fanbase as he played for the Jags from 2013-16 and was known for playing snaps at running back, wide receiver, and kick returner. Over his four-year career with the Jaguars, Robinson racked up 263 carries for 1,058 rushing yards, and five rushing touchdowns. As a receiver, he ended his career with 47 receptions for 310 receiving yards and averaged 22.1 yards per kick return.

As a former do-it-all player, Marrone felt that Robinson’s skill set would be a great addition to his staff.

“I really think he has a great skill set as far as knowledge of a guy that has played quarterback, running back, receiver–he can do a lot of different things, his knowledge of those positions. We feel really fortunate to have him.”

Presuming that the season will start as planned, time will only tell how the staff works together. It’s clear that Marrone feels confident in his additions to the staff. With their valuable experience in the organization and community, Gilbert and Robinson could certainly help the younger players gain more insight on how to maximize their potential on and off the field.

Report: Jags add former draft pick Denard Robinson to coaching staff

A former draft pick from Dave Caldwell’s first draft class has found himself back on the team as an assistant coach.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ coaching staff got bigger this week as the team added a familiar face. Per ESPN’s Field Yates, the organization hired former running back/offensive weapon, Denard Robinson, as an offensive quality control coach.

As pointed out by Yates, the Jags drafted Robinson in the fifth-round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Michigan, which was Dave Caldwell’s first as the team’s general manager. After that, the Florida native from Deerfield Beach stuck around for four seasons, accumulating 263 carries for 1,058 yards and five touchdowns.

After his time with the Jags, Robinson tried out for the Chicago Bears and New York Jets during the summer of 2017, but unfortunately, he couldn’t land a spot on their preseason rosters. That turned him to the Alliance of American Football where he played for the Atlanta Legends before the company unfortunately went bankrupt.

Afterward, in 2019, Robinson joined the Jacksonville University Dolphins’ football staff as an offensive analyst /special teams assistant, but the program was disbanded once the season ended.

The Jags’ decision to add Robinson comes after he was spotted marching with them last Friday during their protest against racial inequality. That would seem to indicate that he remained a native of Jacksonville and never lost his contacts with the team. Now, after a little networking, he’s found himself back in the NFL with a great opportunity ahead of him.

Denard Robinson hired as NFL quality control coach

Tis the season for former college and pro athletes to make their moves in the coaching ranks.

Earlier this week, one former Michigan player in defensive end Mario Ojemudia left his job as a financial advisor to accept a graduate assistant position with Miami of Ohio. Several others who have once worn the winged helmet have shuffled around in recent months, with Desmond Morgan heading to Indiana State, Roy Roundtree leaving Ann Arbor for GVSU and many others.

But one former Michigan standout isn’t going to the college ranks to move up the coaching ladder.

With the Wolverines, Denard Robinson was one of the most electrifying players in all of college football. He was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars as an offensive weapon in the fifth-round of the 2013 NFL Draft, but his career in the pro ranks was short lived. He started coaching in 2019, taking a job as an offensive analyst at Jacksonville University.

Now, according to ESPN NFL insider Field Yates, he’s returning to the Jaguars as an offensive quality control coach.

At Michigan, Robinson was 427 for 747 for 6,250 yards passing with 49 touchdowns to 39 interceptions. As a runner, he carried the ball 723 times for 4,495 yards and 42 more touchdowns.

He’ll join a Jaguars team that has two former Wolverines on the roster in Jarrod Wilson and Brandon Watson, both former undrafted free agents who made the 53-man roster.
