Colts reportedly expected to waive RB Demetric Felton

As part of roster cutdowns, the Colts are reportedly going to waive running back Demetric Felton.

As part of roster cutdowns, the Indianapolis Colts are reportedly waiving running back Demetric Felton, according to Joel Erickson of the Indy Star.

All teams must have their initial 53-man rosters set by 4:00 PM ET on Tuesday, August 27th. If Felton goes unclaimed on waivers he will become a free agent and can sign with any team.

Felton was originally with the Chicago Bears at the start of training camp but was released. He was then claimed off waivers by the Colts following their first preseason game against Denver.

At that time, the Colts found themselves thin at running back with Trey Sermon exiting that game with a hamstring injury and undrafted rookie Trent Pennix suffering a groin injury.

Felton would appear in the Colts’ final two preseason games, totaling 57 yards on four carries with a touchdown. Of Felton’s 57 yards on the ground, 40 came on a single touchdown run against the Bengals.

He would also catch two passes for eight yards and played six total special teams snaps.

Felton was a sixth-round pick by Cleveland in 2021 out of UCLA. Felton has appeared in 24 regular season games in his NFL career, making his greatest impact as a versatile pass catcher out of the backfield. He also has some return experience as well.

The Colts have now reportedly made 14 roster cuts. That means 24 still remain.

Former Browns draft pick gets workout with Alex Van Pelt and the Patriots

Familiar faces could be aligning in New England

Familiar faces could be set for a reunion with the New England Patriots, as former Cleveland Browns hybrid offensive player Demetric Felton got a workout in with his former offensive coordinator and current New England offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.

One of five players the Patriots brought in for a workout, the former sixth round pick in the 2021 NFL draft may get another chance in the NFL. He joined offensive guard Jack Anderson, running back Gary Brightwell, defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson, and guard Mike Panasuik as players looking to impress the Patriots’ brass.

Felton would be one of a variety of former Browns to land in New England this offseason if he were to put pen to paper. Van Pelt, offensive line coach Scott Peters, former tight ends coach TC McCartney, vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf, and former quarterback Jacoby Brissett are another handful who have aligned with the Patriots.

Cut from the Browns after two seasons with the team, Felton landed on the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad a year ago. He is looking for another shot to make an NFL 53-man roster.

Could he get that shot with Van Pelt and the Patriots?

Bengals say new RB Demetric Felton played out of position

The Bengals are excited about the new weapon on the practice squad.

Demetric Felton, the former Cleveland Browns running back the Cincinnati Bengals added to the practice squad, is a guy who coaches say has been playing out of position.

Those Browns used Felton in a hybrid role, lining him up at running back and wide receiver out of the slot.

With the Bengals, offensive coordinator Brian Callahan says Felton will only play running back.

“He’s kind of played out of position,” Callahan said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “He is doing a lot of slot receiverish-type things, not as much pure running back. It’ll be fun to see what he looks like for us as a back. And I think he’s got some legitimate skill.”

It’s an approach that makes sense from a team-depth standpoint, with things still unsteady behind starter Joe Mixon. Trayveon Williams had the injury in training camp, Chase Brown is a rookie (though projected to break out) and Chris Evans hasn’t seen a significant workload.

If another injury or poor performance forces the team’s hand, Felton is a depth guy they could turn to now that coaches think they have his position and fit in the offense nailed down.

4 Downs: Austin Watkins dominance, Cade York inconsistencies, and other takeaways vs. Eagles

Enjoy this week’s edition of 4 Downs!

The preseason matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns ended in an 18-18 deadlock. There is no overtime in the preseason (thankfully) as the first career start for quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson ends in a tie. There were quite a few players with spotlights on them, particularly wide receiver Austin Watkins and kicker Cade York (for different reasons).

In this preseason slop fest that consisted of loads of turnovers and penalties, what stood out for the Browns? Here is your preseason Week 2 edition of 4 Downs.

The DTR Show, roster spot battles, and more to watch for as Browns take on Eagles

The Browns, led by rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, will take on the Eagles tonight. What should you be watching for?

After two days of joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Cleveland Browns will now square off with them in their third preseason game of the 2023 season. Dorian Thompson-Robinson will start this game as both Deshaun Watson and Joshua Dobbs will not suit up in Philadelphia.

Thus far we have seen flashes of the first-team offense (who will not play tonight), dominant performances from the 2023 NFL draft class of rookies, and some camp battles heating up as the end of training camp nears.

As the Browns get set for another week of preseason action, what should you be watching in this exhibition matchup against the Eagles?

Which RB should you handcuff to Nick Chubb in fantasy drafts?

This backfield is awfully murky behind the star rusher.

For most of his five NFL seasons, Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb has been backed up by Kareem Hunt, who provided Cleveland with a capable backup and quality option on passing downs. Hunt’s time with the Browns has come to an end, however, leaving the club to sort through new options to line up behind one of the NFL’s best backs.

As we enter August, the three players vying for that spot are RB Jerome Ford, a fifth-round pick a season ago, Demetric Felton, who is entering his third year with the Browns, and running back John Kelly, a former selection of the Los Angeles Rams who has bounced around the NFL since 2018. With Chubb being an elite fantasy back, securing his backup would be a savvy move for fantasy owners, so it’s a good time to look at the competition and who should be targeted as Cleveland’s RB2.
