New England Patriots defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington will be the representative for the organization at the NFL Coach Accelerator Program in Minneapolis.

The Coach Accelerator Program aims for an increase in exposure between owners, executives, and the coaches themselves. The goal here is to provide an opportunity to develop relationships between the individuals.

New England allowing Covington to spearhead these efforts speaks to the endless amount of respect the assistant coach has earned in the organization. In many ways, it’s not surprising he was the one chosen for this opportunity.

Covington has been a busy man in New England. He was also part of the Patriots’ coaching staff that worked at the Senior Bowl.

It’s clear that the Patriots see something in Covington. He began as a coaching assistant in 2017 and has quickly accelerated up the ranks. If anything, it’s clear the team is doing everything it can to get him noticed.

Chargers interview two candidates for defensive coordinator job

The Chargers have a void to fill with their defensive coordinator position left by Renaldo Hill.

The Chargers have a void to fill with their defensive coordinator position left by Renaldo Hill, who joined the Dolphins to be their passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach.

On Wednesday, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported that Los Angeles interviewed Patriots defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington and the University of Houston defensive coordinator Doug Belk for the job.

Covington has been with New England since 2017 and has coached the team’s defensive line since 2020. He started as a coaching assistant for two seasons and coached the outside linebackers in 2019.

Belk has been with Houston since 2019. He entered the program as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach. He was promoted to associate head coach in 2020 and became defensive coordinator in 2021. He’s previously worked for West Virginia, Alabama, and Valdosta State.

Initially, after it was announced that Hill was leaving for Miami, it was reported that the plan was for defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley to be promoted to the Chargers’ defensive coordinator. But it appears they are still doing their homework.

Patriots’ rising defensive coach interviewed for Chargers’ DC position

The Chargers have reportedly interviewed one of the Patriots’ standout coaches for their vacant defensive coordinator role.

The Los Angeles Chargers initially planned on continuing with Renaldo Hill as their defensive coordinator, but the coach went off to join Vic Fangio and the Miami Dolphins, leaving the Chargers to scramble for a replacement.

That replacement could end up being New England Patriots defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington, who reportedly interviewed for the now vacant defensive coordinator position with the Chargers.

All signs appeared to be pointing towards Covington staying in New England after he failed to land the Arizona Cardinals’ job. However, there are always going to be opportunities for coaches as talented as Covington, and he might be getting a big one with the Chargers, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

As Rapoport noted, the Chargers also interviewed University of Houston defensive coordinator Doug Belk. There could be other candidates waiting in the wings as well.

Covington was noted as a future head coaching candidate by NFL.com back in November. His presence helped solidify a Patriots defensive line that was one of the strengths of the team in 2022.

Patriots DL coach DeMarcus Covington requested for Cardinals interview

Cardinals have requested to interview one of the Patriots’ up-and-coming defensive coaches.

New England Patriots defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington was requested for an interview for the Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator position.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news on Friday.

Covington would join a new Arizona staff, manned by new head coach Jonathan Gannon. At just 33 years of age, Covington is one of the fresher faces on the coaching scene. There is a New England connection here, as Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort worked with Covington in New England.

Covington has been active in the coaching circuit recently, serving as one of the defensive coordinators for the Senior Bowl in January. He has been with the Patriots since the 2017 season and has served the role of defensive line coach since 2020.

This would be another change in what has been a busy offseason for the Patriots. The Cardinals are looking to get back into the middle of the NFC playoff race after a dismal 4-13 season.

Covington to Arizona would be more turnover for New England, as the organization has already undergone several changes this offseason.

Patriots’ rising star coach chosen as defensive coordinator for Senior Bowl

A rising star coach within the Patriots organization will serve as a defensive coordinator at the Senior Bowl.

New England Patriots defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington, a rising star on the coaching staff, will be serving as the defensive coordinator for the American team at the 2023 Senior Bowl.

Covington joined the Patriots in 2017 and worked his way up from coaching assistant to leading the charge along the defensive front. He landed on the NFL.com list of future head coaching candidates.

Multiple Patriots defensive lineman have been singing his praises all season long.

“Head coach,” Davon Godchaux said back in November, when talking about Covington. “He’s so detailed — great head coach one day.”

Along with Covington, Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy is slated to be the head coach, while Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks coach Charles London will take care of the offensive coordinator duties at Hancock Whitney Stadium on February 4.

The Patriots and Falcons’ coaching staffs will also be working the 2023 Shrine Bowl this year. So even though the season is technically over, there is still plenty of work left on the itinerary for Patriots coaches.

NFL.com lists 4 Patriots assistants as future head coaching candidates

Four Patriots assistant named as future head coaching candidates.

The future is bright for the New England Patriots assistant coaching staff, as evident in NFL.com’s list of future head coaching candidates.

That giant sequoia that is Bill Belichick is still creating the most exciting up-and-coming talent in the league. Such is the case when you’re the greatest to ever do it.

But the rest of the football community has taken notice to the rising stars within the Patriots organization, including inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo (36), defensive line coach Demarcus Covington (33), tight ends coach Nick Caley (39) and Ross Douglas (27), who handles NFL coaching fellowship.

All four made Tom Pelissero’s list that was published on Thursday.

Mayo is obviously the name that stands out most considering the name he made for himself as a player before moving on to coaching the team. The former All-Pro linebacker is only coaching in his fourth year with the Patriots, and he has already had multiple head coaching interviews.

Covington is also an interesting name on the list considering the constant praise Patriots players have continued to heap on him.

“Head coach,” Patriots defensive lineman Davon Godchaux recently said on Covington. “He’s so detailed — great head coach one day.”

Meanwhile, Caley and Douglas are two more incredible up-and-coming talents that don’t get the recognition they deserve. So it was great to finally see them get some shine on this list as well.

Say whatever you want about the ongoing issues with Josh McDaniels in Las Vegas, but the future for assistant coaches in New England remains exceptionally radiant under Bill Belichick’s watch.

Patriots players believe one Bill Belichick assistant is the NFL’s next great coach

One fast-rising Bill Belichick assistant could become the NFL’s next great coach.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick isn’t a guy that hands out coaching jobs easily. He typically prefers to lean on familiarity and built-in trust before stamping a title on someone’s name.

It’s likely the reason why former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is calling the offensive plays over a more qualified offensive assistant out there (and there are plenty of them). The jury is still out on the Patriots offense, but on the defensive side, there’s a fast-rising future defensive coordinator candiate in the mix.

That person is Patriots defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington.

The Alabama native is only 33 years old and is already in his sixth season with the Patriots. He cut his teeth as a coaching assistant before working his way through the ranks as an outside linebackers and now defensive line coach.

But Patriots defensive players like Davon Godchaux and Carl Davis believe the sky is the limit for Covington, who is detailed, organized and already a phenomenal teacher.

“The attention to detail that he has, I think he could be a great defensive coordinator,” said Davis, via NESN’s Dakota Randall. “The way he sees the game, he’s been around the game a long time. … I just keep saying the words ‘details, details,’ because that’s so important.”

Godchaux is supremely confident that Covington’s star could shine brighter than even a defensive coordinator role.

“Head coach,” said Godchaux. “He’s so detailed — great head coach one day.”

Similar things have been said about Patriots inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo. So it’s proof that Belichick’s coaching tree is still bearing the right kind of fruit.

The defense appears to be in great hands for years to come. We can only hope there’s the same level of optimism surrounding the offense one day.
