Trio of former Packers recognized on 2023 All-XFL Team

Former Packers Jack Heflin, Delontae Scott and Darrius Shepherd all made the 2023 All-XFL Team.

The Green Bay Packers had three former players recognized on the 2023 All-XFL team, which was announced Monday.

Defensive linemen Jack Heflin and Delontae Scott and return specialist Darrius Shepherd all were honored on the team.

All three were former undrafted free agents signed by the Packers coming out of college.

Heflin, who played two seasons in Green Bay, created 25 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and 1.0 sacks for the Houston Roughnecks.

Scott, who spent the 2020 season on the Packers’ practice squad, produced 36 tackles, 7.5 sacks (tied for second-most) and 11 tackles for loss (tied for third-most) for the San Antonio Brahmas.

Shepherd, who played 14 games for the Packers over the 2020 and 2021 seasons, led the league with 37 kickoff returns and 907 kick return yards for the St. Louis Battlehawks. His 80-yard return against D.C. was the second-longest in the XFL in 2023.

The XFL title game will feature the Arlington Renegades against the D.C. Defenders on Saturday, May 13 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Other notable Packers to play in the XFL this season: Brett Hundley (four starts), Kurt Benkert (two games), John Lovett (three touchdowns), Ryquell Armstead (217 rushing yards), Sal Cannella (41 catches), Alize Mack (28 catches), Ethan Wolf (13 catches), Marwin Evans (7 tackles for loss), Josh Hawkins (fumble recovery), Kentrell Brice (one interception).

Panthers add 3 players to practice squad on Tuesday

Along with signing LB Chandler Wooten, the Panthers added three players to their practice squad on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers made the latest addition to their active roster official—announcing the signing of linebacker Chandler Wooten from the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad. And speaking of practice squads, they’d issue a few changes on their own as well.

Carolina has added three players to the group, including a familiar name in running back Spencer Brown. Brown returns after being released from injured reserve early last month.

The six-foot, 220-pound rusher first joined the Panthers back in May of 2021, when he signed on as an undrafted free agent from the University of Alabama Birmingham. Brown has logged one regular-snap in his NFL career, which came on special teams in Week 17 of the 2021 campaign.

He’s otherwise, over two preseasons, recorded 127 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 37 attempts.

Joining Brown is defensive end Raequan Williams and linebacker Delontae Scott. Williams played in seven games for the Philadelphia Eagles between 2020 and 2021 while Scott appeared in three for the Pittsburgh Steelers over the past two seasons.

To make room for the trio, Carolina parted ways with tight end Josh Babicz, defensive end Austin Larkin and running back John Lovett.

Former Baylor LB among 6 players Panthers bring in on Monday

In addition to holding tryouts for five players on Monday, the Panthers brought former Baylor LB Blake Lynch in for a visit.

Now that the Carolina Panthers have fired head coach Matt Rhule, are the pipelines from both Temple University and Baylor University set to be dismantled?

It seemed that way, at least early on. Defensive coordinator Phil Snow and assistant special teams coach Ed Foley, longtime staffers of Rhule, followed their leader out the door last week. Heck, former Owl Robbie Anderson just got the boot today.

But one Bear just squeaked through to Charlotte, as linebacker Blake Lynch made a visit to the Panthers on Tuesday. Lynch played three seasons, and three different positions, under Rhule at Baylor.

A holdover from the previous regime led by Art Briles, the 6-foot-3, 233-pounder transitioned from wide receiver to safety to linebacker between 2017 and 2019 with Rhule. He would later go undrafted, however, and sign with the Minnesota Vikings on April 28, 2020.

Lynch played in 20 games for Minnesota in 2020 and 2021. He totaled 47 tackles, 2.0 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble.

Carolina, additionally, held tryouts for five players on the afternoon—running back Spencer Brown, defensive linemen Delontae Scott and Raequan Williams and linebackers Joel Iyiegbuniwe and Dorian O’Daniel.
