Commanders LB concern: Cole Holcomb to IR

Cole Holcomb was placed on IR, and he will be out for a minimum of four weeks.

Linebacker Cole Holcomb’s foot injury is not progressing; consequently, the starting linebacker has been placed on injured reserve.

Holcomb the sturdy linebacker out of North Carolina, started the Commanders first seven games of the season. The loss of Holcomb is substantial, evidenced by the fact that though Holcomb has been unable to play in the last four games, the former Tar Heel still leads the team in combined tackles (solo and assists) with 69.

Jamin Davis has continued to develop, or this loss of Holcomb would have been an absolute disaster. Davis has played in all 11 games and is second in tackles with 58 (38 solo, 20 assists).

Placing Holcomb (a four-year veteran) on the reserve/injured list, Friday, the Commanders activated LB Milo Eifler from the Reserve/Injured list. Eifler stands 6-foot-1 weighing 228. Thus Eifler is more mobile than Holcomb, Jon Bostic, or David Mayo.

Eifler has appeared in two games for the Commanders in 2022. He did not play any defensive snaps in the loss to the Cowboys in Week 4 while playing 13 special teams’ plays. In the Week 3 loss to the Eagles, Eifler played 19 special teams’ plays and six defensive plays.

Of note, three weeks ago, the Commanders in response to the Holcomb injury, brought up LB De’Jon Harris from the practice squad. Harris is bigger at 6-foot-0, 245 pounds. In weeks 9-11, Harris has played 19, 20 and 21 special teams snaps. He has yet to play a down on defense for the Commanders this season.

The Commanders will go into Sunday’s contest against the Falcons with Davis, Bostic, Eifler, Harris, Khaleke Hudson and David Mayo at linebacker.

Packers’ De’Vondre Campbell has top tackle rating among LBs in ‘Madden NFL 23’

Virtual De’Vondre Campbell will be making tackles all over the field for the Packers in “Madden NFL 23.”

Give the ratings adjusters at “Madden NFL 23” some credit: They got De’Vondre Campbell’s tackle rating exactly right for this year’s game.

After an All-Pro season in which he finished off all but a handful of tackle attempts, Campbell’s tackle rating in “Madden” is 97 overall, which leads all linebackers in the game.

The virtual version of No. 59 will now be making tackles all over the field for the Packers.

EA Sports was obviously paying attention to Campbell’s first season in Green Bay. According to Pro Football Focus, Campbell missed just four tackles and had a missed tackle percentage of just 2.9, the best among linebackers over the last two seasons.

Campbell is 87 overall, good for ninth best at the position. He also has 91 pursuit, 87 play recognition, 81 hit power, 87 acceleration and 85 speed.

Here are the best tacklers among linebackers in “Madden NFL 23”:

Here is Campbell’s quote tweet, in which he says he takes great pride in being a top tackler:

Campbell has always been one of the best tacklers. Now, he has the All-Pro and Madden recognition to show for it.

Packers elevate DL Billy Winn, LB De’Jon Harris from practice squad for Week 4

The Packers added veteran DL Billy Winn and rookie LB De’Jon Harris from the practice squad for Week 4 against the Falcons.

A pair of practice squad elevations will provide depth for the front seven of the Green Bay Packers defense on Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Packers elevated veteran defensive lineman Billy Winn and rookie linebacker De’Jon Harris from the practice squad to the gameday roster for Week 4.

The Packers have injury issues at both positions, with defensive lineman Kenny Clark questionable to play and linebacker Christian Kirksey on injured reserve.

Teams can elevate up to two players from the practice squad each week. An individual player can only be elevated twice. Winn, for instance, has been elevated each of the last two weeks and can no longer be elevated.

Given that both players were elevated for this week, expect both to be active and likely participate in some fashion against the Falcons on Monday night.

Winn, who has played in 69 career games, was on the field for six defensive snaps against the New Orleans Saints last week.

Harris, an undrafted rookie from Arkansas, will be making his NFL debut.

Both players will be assigned back the practice following the conclusion of Monday night’s game.

The Packers also promoted receiver Reggie Begelton, signing him to the 53-man roster on Monday.
