Marlon Vera vs. Deiveson Figueiredo prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC on ABC 7

A win over Marlon Vera at UFC Abu Dhabi would go a long way toward Deiveson Figueiredo’s goal of becoming a two-division champ.

[autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] and [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] meet Saturday on the main card of UFC on ABC 7 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 3-2
UFC main cards, 2024: 64-56-3

Marlon Vera vs. Deiveson Figueiredo UFC on ABC 7 preview

How will Vera (23-9-1 MMA, 15-8 UFC) respond to his bantamweight title-fight loss to Sean O’Malley this past March at UFC 299? That is the question. Unsurprisingly, Vera has promised to make an example of Figueiredo in hopes of making a second run at a title shot. … Figueiredo (23-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC), a former two-time flyweight champion, aims to continue his quest toward a second belt after beating Rob Font and most recently ex-champ Cody Garbrandt in his first two appearances at bantamweight.

Marlon Vera vs. Deiveson Figueiredo UFC on ABC 7 expert pick, prediction

In a fight that should’ve easily been the choice to co-main event this card, Figueiredo will do battle with Vera at 135 pounds.

Even if Figueiredo isn’t the biggest bantamweight on the roster, the former flyweight kingpin has proven why people like myself have long predicted the Brazilian to both move up and do well in this division.

Although I’m upset that the matchmakers continue to miss the biggest layup in the world by not booking Figueiredo against Petr Yan for an undeniable stylistic orgasm of epic proportions, I suppose we could do worse than a three-round action fight with the always-game Vera.

In Vera’s defense, I’d be tempted to take a flier on him as an underdog if this were a five-round affair. But with only 15 minutes to cover, I suspect that Figueiredo can dictate the bulk of the action while landing the harder blows via crushing counters.

The pick is Figueiredo by unanimous decision.

Marlon Vera vs. Deiveson Figueiredo UFC on ABC 7 odds

Despite the oddsmakers opening this fight as a pick’em, public money has come in on the former flyweight champ, listing Figueiredo -142 and Vera +116 via FanDuel.

Before UFC on ABC 7, Marlon Vera warns Deiveson Figueiredo about consequences of takedowns

“He can try to hump my leg, but I’m going to slice him up with elbows,” Marlon Vera said of Deiveson Figueiredo.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] plans on making [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] pay if he shoots on him.

Vera (23-9-1 MMA, 15-8 UFC) will look to rebound from his title loss when he takes on Figueiredo (23-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) on Saturday’s UFC on ABC 7 (ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+) main card at Etihad Arena.

Former flyweight champion Figueiredo has shown off his ground game since moving up to 135 pounds, defeating Rob Font and then submitting Cody Garbrandt. Vera is expecting a similar approach from the Brazilian.

“His last two fights, based on 35’ers, he’s been pretty much only wrestling,” Vera told reporters, including MMA Junkie at UFC on ABC 7 media day. “He’s just been changing levels and going for a takedown. I don’t know if he feels the size difference. I don’t know if he’s just that good on the ground, but I know for a fact I’m good on the ground. So, if we go to the ground, I’ll be just fine.”

Figueiredo has trained at Khabib Nurmagomedov’s gym since touching down in Abu Dhabi. Vera scoffed at the linkup.

“F*ck yeah, Khabib, that’s cool,” Vera said. “He can try to hump my leg, but I’m going to slice him up with elbows. Even if he’s three months with Khabib or a year with Khabib, I don’t give a f*ck.”

Vera has never been finished in 33 professional fights. Figueiredo predicted he’ll be the first to knock out Vera, but “Chito” isn’t buying it.

“That probably means he’s going to f*cking just shoot and smell my crotch in the first second of the fight,” Vera said. “So, we know how this works. Fighters say something and do something else, but I mean, if we wants to try, we can give it a try.

“I never take pride in these things because I don’t want to talk about it and put it out in the universe. I just work hard and do the best I can, but yeah, he can give it a try.”

Marlon Vera plans to ‘pull all the demons’ vs. Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC on ABC 7

Ahead of UFC Abu Dhabi, Marlon Vera is taking Deiveson Figueiredo very seriously and is preparing for hell.

[autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] is taking [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] very seriously.

Vera (21-9-1 MMA, 15-8 UFC) meets Figueiredo (23-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) in a bantamweight bout at the UFC Fight Night card Aug. 3 at Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

In order to rebound from his title loss to Sean O’Malley at UFC 299, “Chito” will have to halt the momentum of Figueiredo, who has looked in peak form since he moved to bantamweight. Vera views it as a must-win fight.

“I’m going to focus on Figueiredo. I know that’s a big challenge,” Vera said on “The MMA Hour.” “I’m taking this just as serious as I was taking the title fight (and) all the fights before. I’m going to get in there and let this motherf*cker know we’re on my time, and if I have to dig deep and f*cking go to the basement and pull all the demons, we’ll f*cking bring them.”

[lawrence-related id=2743361,2722479,2722827]

Figueiredo defeated Rob Font, and submitted former champion Cody Garbrandt at 135 pounds. Vera expects a stern challenge from the former UFC flyweight champion.

“I feel it’s a dangerous fight,” Vera said. “That’s a guy who’s been a world champion. He fought for the belt many times. He fought big names and he’s undefeated in my weight class. He beat a guy that I beat (Font). He beat a former champion Garbrandt. I know he’s a guy not to take lightly. I can say whatever I want. I can be mean. I can be a d*ck. But I know this is going to be a fight that I will have to fight.

“I mean, you know this about me. I’m not taking it easy. I’m not chilling right now. I’m going four-by-four. I really want to get in there and make this guy f*cking suffer and I just want to get on top with a win, and figure out how to get back to the title conversation. The best way to do that is go to Abu Dhabi and f*cking rip this man apart.”

Figueiredo, a former multi-time UFC flyweight champion, will look to stay unbeaten since moving up to bantamweight in 2023. He’s already 2-0 in the division with victories over Rob Font and Cody Garbrandt, which has earned him the No. 14 spot in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings.

Cody Garbrandt says he experienced vertigo during UFC 300 loss

Cody Garbrandt said the vertigo he experienced was so bad that he was at the hospital after UFC 300 until 4 a.m.

[autotag]Cody Garbrandt[/autotag] says he was dealing with vertigo during his UFC 300 fight against [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag].

After looking fluid on the feet during the striking exchanges, Garbrandt (14-6 MMA, 9-6 UFC) was submitted by Figueiredo (23-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) in Round 2 of their bantamweight bout Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Garbrandt explained that things were going well until he started feeling dizzy, something he’s been dealing with for years.

“I felt great in my fight until I started to experience vertigo,” the former UFC bantamweight champion wrote in a message posted on X. “I couldn’t control the spinning once it was to the ground. Hats off to Deiveson and his camp! I ended up going to the hospital where I was still experiencing the vertigo, throwing up until 4 a.m. ,,, I’ll get this corrected. I’ve dealt with vertigo since 2012. Thank you to the fans that came out to support. It wasn’t my night, but I love doing what I do. I’ll be back in there before the year is up.”

Garbrandt had his two-fight winning streak snapped after beating Trevin Jones and knocking out Brian Kelleher. Garbrandt is 3-6 since his spectacular title win over Dominick Cruz in 2016.

Deiveson Figueiredo: ‘I deserve to fight for the championship next’ after UFC 300

Deiveson Figueiredo thinks he’s done enough to earn a title shot.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] thinks he’s done enough to earn a title shot.

Figueiredo (23-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) picked up his second win at bantamweight when he submitted former champion Cody Garbrandt (14-6 MMA, 9-6 UFC) Saturday at UFC 300.

The former flyweight champ says to expect even more from him in his new weight class.

“This was an incredible night,” Figueiredo told MMA Junkie and other reporters through an interpreter at the UFC 300 post-fight press conference. “I came off a victory over a very (big) name guy, Cody Garbrandt, very tough guy. This just shows what the new chapter in my career’s going to be.”

Petr Yan was suggested as a potential next opponent for Figueiredo, but he dismissed that idea. The Brazilian only has his sights set on gold, despite now being in a stacked division.

“I’m a former champion in the other division. I’m coming up and winning in this division, and I want to fight for the championship,” Figueiredo said. “The (flyweight title) fight against (Brandon) Moreno, there was a mistake in my view, so I think I deserve to fight for the championship next.”

Figueiredo is ready to jump in for any opportunity. Bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley is expected to face Merab Dvalishvili next, and Figueiredo is happy to face either next.

“I’m 100 percent. I’m ready to fight again, be it Sean O’Malley, be it Merab – whoever it is,” Figueiredo said. “Whatever Dana decides, I’m going to be in.”

UFC 300’s Cody Garbrandt sees signs Deiveson Figueiredo might not be prepared: ‘I’ve been there’

What Cody Garbrandt credits for reviving his career is exactly what he sees Deiveson Figueiredo lacking ahead of UFC 300.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Cody Garbrandt[/autotag] admits he’s been there, which is why his internal gauge is telling him [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] might be physically unprepared for Saturday’s historic UFC 300 card at T-Mobile Arena.

The two former champions were booked to fight for the flyweight title during Figueiredo’s reign in 2020. However, Garbrandt (14-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) withdrew and the bout never materialized again – until now.

Garbrandt called for the rebooking after his UFC 296 knockout of Brian Kelleher in December and the promotion quickly obliged. The lead-up has included some trash talk, which led Gabrandt to think Figueiredo (22-3-1 MMA, 11-3-1 UFC) might be acting out of desperation.

“I’ve been there,” Gabrandt told MMA Junkie and other reporters Wednesday at a pre-fight news conference. “Maybe he lacks a lot of confidence. Maybe he didn’t prepare like he needed to, so he’s trying to get into the head game. Maybe that’s his out. ‘If I can get in Cody’s head, I’m going to win this fight.’ If that’s what he’s going off of to be victorious on Saturday, he’s going to have a long night ahead of him.”

[lawrence-related id=2731834,2731837]

Garbrandt’s fall from championship grace was initially a hard one. After an 11-0 run as a pro that led him to a UFC title win over Dominick Cruz, Garbrandt lost five of six, including four knockout defeats.

Since the start of 2023, however, Garbrandt has won back-to-back fights. He credits his reinvention to mental strides from work with a therapist.

“It’s something that I never thought I needed to do,” Garbrandt said. “Some of my hardest sessions were going in there with him, over the training, over the sparring, over the constant grind. It was always driving to those sessions knowing that I had to open up about my thoughts, my feelings, and I’ve never been one to express those. He’s helped out a lot, tremendously, not just in my athletic career performance-wise, but life as well. Being able to balance all that together and stay engaged in the moments and the times, I feel like that’s a huge thing that I’ve worked (on) that’s different. Nothing is different in my speed, my power, my vision. It’s my mental fortitude that’s what’s keeping me here and keeping me motivated and understanding this is what I love to do.”

Garbrandt and Figueiredo will kick off an ultra-stacked card as the first fight of the night. Garbrandt is flattered by the bout card positioning and the opportunity to fight on one of the promotion’s most historic cards.

“We’re making history,” Garbrandt said. “There’s never been a matchup in the UFC that’s two former world champions kicking off a card. I’m grateful for the spotlight, grateful for the opener of the amazing card with such amazing athletes. Also, (I’m grateful) to draw people in early. They don’t want to miss this fight.”
