Petr Yan hopes to leapfrog Umar Nurmagomedov as title challenger with UFC Macau win

Petr Yan will look to steal a title shot with an impressive performance vs. Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC Fight Night 248.

[autotag]Petr Yan[/autotag] will look to enter the bantamweight title picture at UFC Fight Night 248.

Yan (17-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC) meets [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] (24-3-1 MMA, 13-3-1 UFC) in Saturday’s main event (ESPN+) at Galaxy Arena in Macau. With bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili saying Figueiredo is more deserving than Umar Nurmagomedov, Yan sees this as an opportunity to steal the spotlight.

“Deiveson is a former champ, and also Merab has been saying that he’s the only real deserving challenger for his belt,” Yan told UFC News through an interpreter. “So for me, it’s a good opportunity for me to get this position, to beat him and challenge for the belt instead of him.”

Dvalishvili has refused to acknowledge undefeated Nurmagomedov as No. 1 contender, which Yan thinks only increases his chances of taking his spot.

“I believe this is a No. 1 contender’s fight,” Yan said. “Merab is currently champ, but I believe that he’s not ready to defend his title just yet, especially against Umar. It seems like he is avoiding him. Also Umar, I believe he maybe needs a couple of good wins too. So, with a win over Deiveson, I believe that I can get back into the title picture and challenge for the belt again.”

Yan snapped a three-fight losing skid when he outlasted Song Yadong at UFC 299 in March. Despite the recent struggles, the former bantamweight champion likes his chances against anyone in the division.

“To be honest, I feel like I only have one real loss on my record,” Yan said. “I believe that I’ll be able to compete with all of the top guys and still challenge for a belt.”

A pivotal bantamweight bout is headed to the UFC’s return event in China.

Former flyweight champion [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] takes on former bantamweight champ [autotag]Petr Yan[/autotag] in a five-round main event Nov. 23 at UFC Fight Night 248 from Galaxy Arena in Macau. A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie on Wednesday following an initial report from Leo Guimaraes.

Figueiredo also has posted about the fight on social media.

Figueiredo (24-3-1 MMA, 13-3-1 UFC) scored his third straight win since moving up to bantamweight when he defeated Marlon Vera at UFC on ABC 7 in August. Figueiredo was hoping to get a title shot against newly crowned champion Merab Dvalishvili but will have to go through a former champion first.

After dropping three straight to Aljamain Sterling, Sean O’Malley, and Dvalishvili, Yan (17-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC) rebounded with a win over rising contender Song Yadong at UFC 299 in March.

With the addition, the current UFC Fight Night 248 lineup includes:

  • Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Petr Yan
  • Lone’er Kavanagh vs. Jose Ochoa
  • Carlos Hernandez vs. Nyamjargal Tumendemberel
  • Ozzy Diaz vs. Zhang Mingyang

Cory Sandhagen says Deiveson Figueiredo turned him down: ‘Maybe he wants to take the easier fights’

Cory Sandhagen thought Deiveson Figueiredo “was a little bit more about that life” and is surprised he declined to fight him.

According to [autotag]Cory Sandhagen[/autotag], a top UFC bantamweight contender declined to fight him.

Sandhagen, who’s coming off a main event loss to Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC on ABC 7 in August, said the UFC tried to match him up with [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] (24-3-1 MMA, 13-3-1 UFC) at the end of the year.

“Figgy turned down the fight against me in September, which is just kind of whack because I thought that Figgy was a little bit more about that life than that,” Sandhagen said on his YouTube channel. “I’m kind of actually hurt that Figgy doesn’t want to fight me in December, but maybe he wants to take the easier fights. I don’t know what that dude’s plan is.”

Sandhagen (17-5 MMA, 10-4 UFC) initially campaigned to fight Sean O’Malley (18-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) after he lost his bantamweight title to Merab Dvalishvili (18-4 MMA, 11-2 UFC) by unanimous decision in this past Saturday’s UFC 306 main event at Sphere in Las Vegas.

But upon hearing that O’Malley is set to undergo surgery Oct. 3 for a torn labrum in his hip, he’s a little disappointed.

“It’s really a bummer, man, because I was really hoping to get that fight one, and then two, the fans get really excited about fights like that, and that’s just a bummer that they don’t get to have that fight right now at least,” Sandhagen told Fanatics View. “But even in the future, you never really know what’s going to happen. It kind of reminds me of three or four years ago when people were really trying to hype up a me and Dominick Cruz fight.

“Cruz just never ended up taking the fight. He had other opportunities, and he took those ones. That’s just a bummer. I hope that’s not the case with this one and that the fans eventually get to watch me and O’Malley fight. … I’m not going to wait until the summer for O’Malley. No way. I like fighting. I was just out for an entire year. I really wanted to get something in December, but I think it’s realistically going to be a bit longer than that.”

UFC champ Merab Dvalishvili insists Deiveson Figueiredo more worthy challenger than Umar Nurmagomedov

Merab Dvalishvili’s stance on Umar Nurmagomedov remains the same.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Merab Dvalishvili[/autotag]’s stance on [autotag]Umar Nurmagomedov[/autotag] remains the same.

Dvalishvili (18-4 MMA, 11-2 UFC) claimed the bantamweight title with a dominant decision over Sean O’Malley in Saturday’s UFC 306 main event at Sphere in Las Vegas.

Nurmagomedov was in attendance for the fight, and was waiting for Dvalishvili to call his name in his post-fight octagon interview, but to no avail. Dvalishvili was later asked who he’d like to face next and he doubled down on wanting [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] (24-3-1 MMA, 13-3-1 UFC).

“Whoever they want, I will fight next, but I want to talk to Dana (White) more close – I want to become his friend,” Dvalishvili told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a post-fight news conference Saturday. “I want to fight the top of the top, you know.

“I think Figueiredo would be my fifth champion on my list. He is more dangerous, knockout power, good jiu-jitsu, makes people sleep. Coming from three straight wins, top guys, that’s why this fight excites me, makes me motivated, makes me work hard.”

As for Nurmagomedov (18-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC), Dvalishvili suggested he fight Petr Yan for a No. 1 contender spot, as he thinks one win over a top-ranked contender isn’t enough.

“Umar is OK, but I’m telling you guys, from the top 15 he’s only won one fight and that was Cory Sandhagen. We all saw what Aljamain Sterling did against Cory Sandhagen, made him sleep in first round. I respect Cory Sandhagen, but yeah.”

Nurmagomedov reacted to Dvalishvili’s win on “X.”

“I expected more from Sean, Merab did his job well. I hope he won’t avoid the real challenger. In any case, I’m ready.”

Merab Dvalishvili: Deiveson Figueiredo deserves UFC title shot more than Umar Nurmagomedov

Merab Dvalishvili argues that Deiveson Figueiredo is a more worthy No. 1 contender than Umar Nurmagomedov after UFC 306.

[autotag]Merab Dvalishvili[/autotag] argues that [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] is a more worthy No. 1 contender than [autotag]Umar Nurmagomedov[/autotag].

Dvalishvili (17-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC) challenges bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley (17-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) in the UFC 306 main event Sept. 14 at Sphere in Las Vegas. The main card airs on ESPN+ pay-per-view following prelims on ESPNews.

UFC CEO Dana White said Nurmagomedov (18-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) will get the next title shot against the winner of O’Malley vs. Dvalishvili following his UFC on ABC 7 main event win over Cory Sandhagen in August, but at least one side of the fight doesn’t see him as deserving.

Dvalishvili makes the case former flyweight champ Figueiredo (24-3-1 MMA, 13-3-1 UFC) has a superior resume to Nurmagomedov since moving up to 135 pounds.

“Deiveson Figueiredo deserves to fight for the belt,” Dvalishvili told MMA Junkie. “He beat one former champion in this weight class and one title challenger, and he beat Rob Font. And Figueiredo is former champion, and he has big name, and he deserves.

“Umar, he only beat Cory Sandhagen from top 15. Only one guy he beat from top 15 and why he deserve to fight for the belt? I’m not saying – even if I would be champion, he has to fight Sean O’Malley. I don’t think he deserves to fight for the belt, you know. That’s my opinion.”

Since moving up to bantamweight, former flyweight champion Figueiredo has defeated Font, former champion Cody Garbrandt, and most recently former title challenger Marlon Vera.

Meanwhile, Nurmagomedov went from finishing unranked Raoni Barcelos to beating Bekzat Almakhan to outlasting Sandhagen in his first octagon headliner.

Marlon Vera: Figueiredo should have been lost a point for UFC Saudi Arabia kick

Marlon Vera thinks Deiveson Figueiredo should have been docked a point at UFC on ABC 7.

[autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] thinks [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] should have been docked a point at UFC on ABC 7.

Vera (23-10-1 MMA, 15-9 UFC) was not happy with the axe kick Figueiredo (24-3-1 MMA, 13-3-1 UFC) landed on him while he was grounded on his back – just after the Round 1 horn sounded in their bantamweight bout this past Saturday in Abu Dhabi.

“Chito” lost the fight by unanimous decision, but says if referee Keith Peterson acknowledged the illegal blow and penalized Figueiredo for it, the outcome would have been different.

“The only thing that I want to take away from this fight, or at least I want to start with, it was like, that axe kick that he landed in the first round, that wasn’t an accident,” Vera on his YouTube channel. “That went straight into my face. I feel like that should be taken a point deducted automatically. That’s my thought and what I believe. You go by the rules, you don’t kick a grounded opponent. I would get it if I was playing the game with the hand.

“When you’re a downed opponent – not down, but I was in my guard and that was a clean-ass kick to the face. … That’s something different that could change the route of the fight because I’m getting my head bounced on the ground. At the end of the day, that’s an illegal shot, and I would say if that would be a point deduction we could be talking a different story right now.”

Had Peterson deducted a point from Figueiredo, the bout would have been ruled a majority draw. Vera also addressed coming back five months after being battered in his title fight against bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley at UFC 299 in March.

“I just want to say one thing about me coming back a little too quick, me and the team definitely got to the conclusion that we definitely came back too soon,” Vera said. “I went into a five-round war with the champion and we all agreed that after my March title fight that we would come back either November in New York or December.

“There was no chance of us coming back earlier, so I feel that was a mistake on us. I would say on me, on the team’s decision, because at the end of the day, we are a team and we all agreed to come back even if we say not to. Sometimes you feel good and you just say, ‘F*ck it, let’s do it,’ and you roll the dice.”

What time is Marlon Vera vs. Deiveson Figueiredo? Walkout time for UFC on ABC 7 fight

[autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] and [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] meet in a pivotal bantamweight clash at UFC on ABC 7. This bout scheduled for three rounds is taking place Saturday, Aug. 3 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

Vera (23-9-1 MMA, 15-8 UFC) enters the bout roughly five months removed from his failed attempt at claiming the 135-pound title from Sean O’Malley at UFC 299. Vera has vowed to “make an example” of Figueiredo, who is determined to add his name to the UFC record books.

A former flyweight champion, Figueiredo (23-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) has won his first two bouts at bantamweight against Rob Font and former champ Cody Garbrandt. A third victory against Vera just might be the breakthrough he needs to be taken seriously in the division.

UFC on ABC 7: Marlon Vera vs. Deiveson Figueiredo odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC on ABC 7 odds between Marlon Vera vs. Deiveson Figueiredo, with MMA picks and predictions.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

In a 3-round bantamweight bout on the main card, Marlon Vera and Deiveson Figueiredo meet Saturday at UFC on ABC 7 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the UFC on ABC 7: Vera vs. Figueiredo odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The prelims begin noon ET, on ESPN2/ESPN+, while the main card starts at 3 p.m. ET, on ABC/ESPN.

Records: Vera (23-9-1) | Figueiredo (23-3-1)

Vera last fought at UFC 299, losing a unanimous-decision championship fight against Sean O’Malley March 9. He is now 1-2 in his past 3 bouts, also falling to Cory Sandhagen via split decision in a main event fight March 25, 2023.

Each of Vera’s past 3 bouts have ended up going the distance, while he has had just 2 finishes in the past 8 bouts.

Figueiredo is a former champ who won the strap Feb. 29, 2020, against Joseph Benavidez, before defending against the same fighter July 18, 2020. He also stopped Alex Perez in a title defense at UFC 255. He fought to a draw in a title fight with Brandon Moreno at UFC 256, before losing via submission at UFC 263, also to Moreno.

He fought Moreno 4 straight times, winning via unanimous decision at UFC 270, before falling via TKO – Doctor’s Stoppage at UFC 283. Since, he picked up a unanimous-decision win over Rob Font while posting a 2nd-round submission win over Cody Garbrandt, positioning himself for another title shot.

Vera has a 2.5-inch reach advantage, and the switch-stance fighter has a 4.31-to-3.01 significant strikes landed per minute advantage. Figueiredo is a little more accurate at 60.05% on those significant strikes, to just 52.20% for Vera. Figueiredo is much better in the submission average category, too, posting a 1.73 mark to just 0.87 for the Ecuadoran.

UFC on ABC 7: Vera vs. Figueiredo picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

FIGUEIREDO (-142) is worth a look as a moderate favorite to win straight up on the 2-way line.

The former champ has looked good in his past 2 fights, topping Font via unanimous decision while making quick work of Sandhagen at UFC 300 with a Round 2 submission.

Vera (+120) has never been submitted or knocked out. It’s more than likely that if the Brazilian gets the job done, the judges will be involved. As such, FIGUEIREDO BY POINTS (+105) at plus-money is an attractive play.

Over/Under (O/U)

Yes (-225): Will the fight go the distance? will set you back more than 2 times your potential return, and that’s just too risky for not nearly enough of a reward.

In addition, Over 2.5 Rounds (-280) will cost you nearly 3 times your potential return, and there is no value in that, either. Even as part of a multi-leg parlay, including the Over/Under props makes little to no sense.
