Oklahoma Sooners add SEC wideout via transfer portal

OU’s third transfer portal commit from the portal comes from a fellow SEC school.

The Oklahoma Sooners are continuing to rebuild their wide receiver room through the [autotag]transfer portal[/autotag]. After the 2024 season saw the top five wideouts miss all or the vast majority of the season due to injuries, and three of those five players decided not to come back, [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and his coaching staff have been hard at work building back the wide receiver depth chart in stronger, healthier fashion.

Oklahoma has now added former Arkansas Razorbacks wideout Isaiah Sategna in the transfer portal, marking the third WR that will be transferring to Norman.

Javonnie Gibson (Arkansas Pine-Bluff) and Keontez Lewis (Southern Illinois) will have some work to do when it comes to playing in the SEC, but Sategna will be right at home in college football’s toughest conference. That trio will join returners [autotag]Deion Burks[/autotag] and Jayden Gibson to try and help the wide receiver room rebound.

Sategna is a smaller receiver at 5’11 and 185 pounds, but he managed to haul in 37 receptions for 491 yards this season. He also had a punt return touchdown for the Hogs.

There’s still plenty of work to be done when it comes to remaking OU’s wide receiver depth chart, but three additions in a few days is a good start.

Oklahoma Sooners earn commitment from transfer portal wide receiver

The Oklahoma Sooners picked up a commitment from wide receiver Javonnie Gibson via the transfer portal.

The Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver room is undergoing massive turnover this offseason. [autotag]Deion Burks[/autotag] and [autotag]Jayden Gibson[/autotag] will return, and they’ll have a new face in the wide receiver room. Oklahoma earned a commitment from Arkansas-Pine Bluff wide receiver Javonnie Gibson via the [autotag]transfer portal[/autotag] on Wednesday.

Gibson was incredibly productive in 2024, recording 70 receptions for 1,215 yards and nine touchdowns.

At 6 feet, 3 inches and 205 pounds, Gibson was an unrated prospect coming out of high school. He was considered the No. 35 wide receiver in 247Sports transfer portal rankings. He has the size the Oklahoma Sooners are looking for on the outside.

He had five games of more than 100 yards receiving in 2024, including three games of more than 170 yards.

With some production at the collegiate level, Gibson will have an opportunity to compete for a starting job in the Sooners offense.

Former Sooners WR Nic Anderson transfers to SEC school

Former Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver Nic Anderson joining the LSU Tigers.

The Oklahoma Sooners’ wide receiver room faces a serious makeover this offseason. Of the players considered among of the top eight at the position, only [autotag]Deion Burks[/autotag] and [autotag]Jayden Gibson[/autotag] remain.

One of those wide receiver [autotag]transfer portal[/autotag] departures was former four-star [autotag]Nic Anderson[/autotag], who committed to the LSU Tigers. Anderson will return to Norman when LSU makes the trip for the 2025 season finale.

Anderson was a revelation in 2023, emerging in the wake of Andrel Anthony’s season-ending injury. Anderson caught the game-winner to beat Texas and had a career year with 798 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.

However, an injury in fall camp forced him to miss the start of the season. He attempted to return against Tennessee but reaggravated his hamstring injury in the loss and missed the remainder of the season.

Anderson will join fellow former Sooner Bauer Sharp, who also transferred to LSU. They’ll join a Tigers offense that was one of the best passing offenses in the SEC in 2024. He will get the opportunity to catch passes from Garrett Nussmeier, who is likely to be a Heisman contender in 2025.

Deion Burks returning huge for the Oklahoma Sooners

The Oklahoma Sooners got great news with the return of wide receiver Deion Burks.

The Oklahoma Sooners have watched a number of players leave the team via the [autotag]transfer portal[/autotag] in December. Most have come from an offense that was in shambles in 2024 due to injury and inexperience.

One of the players who battled injuries in 2024 was wide receiver [autotag]Deion Burks[/autotag]. Burks announced his return to the Oklahoma Sooners on social media on Saturday evening.

Burks’ return provides the Sooners with a little continuity on offense. He was second on the team in receptions despite only playing in five games. He finished the season with 31 receptions for 245 yards and three touchdowns. That after a productive year at Purdue that made him one of the more highly sought-after wide receivers in last year’s transfer portal class.

Oklahoma is retooling the wide receiver room after [autotag]Jalil Farooq[/autotag], [autotag]Nic Anderson[/autotag], and [autotag]Andrel Anthony[/autotag] departed via the portal. They were anticipated to lead the way in 2025, and Burks was a candidate to leave for the NFL. But Burks’ return helps provide the wide receiver room with starting experience as Brent Venables, Ben Arbuckle, and Emmett Jones scour the wide receiver market.

“Easy decision, man,” Burks said after practice on Monday via The Oklahoman. “Just want to come back. … Got great characters here, coach BV, I believe in his plan, what he has going on. I believe in coach Emmett Jones. … I wanted to leave the place better than I found it.”

The Sooners need leadership in the room. A guy who knows what’s expected in the offseason program, especially as the Sooners look to add talent via the transfer portal.

But beyond what he provides off the field, the Sooners will be glad to get his explosiveness and route-running back on the field for whoever plays quarterback for the team in 2025. Burks is a big play threat every time he steps foot on the field. Oklahoma’s issues along the offensive line didn’t allow the Sooners offense to take advantage of his big-play ability. But with a developing offensive line room and, hopefully, a healthier wide receiver group in 2025, the Sooners can get everything out of Burks that he’s capable of.

Oklahoma vs Alabama injury report: Jalil Farooq out vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Oklahoma Sooners Wide Receiver Jalil Farooq was ruled out for Saturday’s game against Alabama on the Friday injury update.

The Oklahoma Sooners haven’t had any luck on their side when it comes to injuries. Jalil Farooq, who played a limited role against Missouri and started the week off the injury report has now been ruled out for Saturday’s game.

Farooq and the wide receiver room was supposed to be a strength for the Oklahoma Sooners this season, but that never materialized. In addition to Farooq, Nic Anderson, Deion Burks, and Jayden Gibson have played sparingly or not at all this season, severely limiting Oklahoma’s passing attack.

While depth options like Brenan Thompson and J.J. Hester have provided some promising moments, the most consistency the Sooners have had in the passing game has come from true freshman walk-on Jacob Jordan. With Farooq and Burks out this week, Jordan should be in line for a significant role Saturday night against Alabama.

About the only good news that came this week is that offensive tackle Michael Tarquin will be available after missing the Maine and Missouri games. He should replace Spencer Brown at right tackle, allowing Logan Howland to continue to play and develop on the left side of the offensive line.

The offensive line has displayed some promising things in recent weeks, especially in the run game. How the offensive line performs against Alabama will be key to their success.

Michael Tarquin injury update

After missing Oklahoma’s last two games against Maine and Missouri, it looks like starting tackle Michael Tarquin will be back in action this week after not landing on the initial injury report. Now, the question becomes, does he take over at right or left tackle?

Jalil Farooq injury update

Jalil Farooq has been recovering from a surgically repaired broken foot suffered in week one. He’s now been downgraded to out for Saturday night’s game.

Deion Burks injury update

Deion Burks was downgraded to out for Saturday’s game against Alabama. He suffered a concussion in the second half of the Missouri game. He’s been ruled out for the game against Alabama.

Jovantae Barnes injury update

Jovantae Barnes sprained his ankle during his 200-yard effort against Maine and was forced to miss the game against Missouri. Barnes was listed as questionable on the Friday night injury report and looks unlikely to pay this week.

Gavin Sawchuk injury update

Running back Gavin Sawchuk was off the injury report for Oklahoma’s game against Missouri but didn’t play. Instead, Taylor Tatum, Xavier Robinson, and Sam Franklin who got the running back snaps. Could Sawchuk be available this week to help the Sooners’ rushing attack?

Joshua Bates injury update

Joshua Bates was moved to out for this Saturday against Alabama.

Oklahoma to be without key playmaker vs. Alabama

Oklahoma’s top wide receiver will be out Saturday against Alabama.

After a total of 11 players for the Oklahoma Sooners were listed on the SEC’s initial Week 13 injury report Wednesday night, the Alabama Crimson Tide’s upcoming opponent saw some changes on the latest update Thursday night, which included a notable playmaker now being listed as “out.”

That player is Oklahoma wideout Deion Burks, who is a prominent name for the Sooners offense that ranks second in receiving, sitting behind only tight end Bauer Sharp. For the season, Burks has played in only five games, but has a total of 31 receptions for 245 yards and three touchdowns, and is the Sooners top player at the wide receiver position.

In addition to Burks, there were also two other notable differences from the Sooners latest injury report Thursday night, the first of which was offensive lineman Joshua Bates being downgraded from “questionable” to “doubtful.”

Oklahoma also had one player added to the injury report Thursday night in wide receiver Jalil Farooq, who is now listed as “questionable.” Farooq has appeared in two games so far this season, hauling in three receptions for 58 yards.

While the availability of Bates and Farroq is still an unknown, what is in fact known however is that the loss of Burks going into Saturday is a significant one for the Sooners offense.

Oklahoma vs Alabama injury report: Sooners Wide Receivers Downgraded

The Oklahoma Sooners look to be heading into their matchup with Alabama once again without key wide receivers.

Just when it seemed like things were coming together for the Oklahoma Sooners on the injury front, at least a little bit, the Sooners downgraded Jalil Farooq to questionable.

On the initial injury report, Farooq wasn’t even listed, so his presence puts in doubt his availability for Saturday’s game against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Oklahoma can’t seem to find any luck on the injury front, but that’s been the case all year.

Once again, the Sooners are trending to be without their top five wide receivers against Alabama.

Here’s a look at the latest injury report.

Deion Burks injury update

Jovantae Barnes sprained his ankle during his 200-yard effort against Maine and was forced to miss the game against Missouri. Though listed as questionable for this week, he’s had two weeks to rest. Depending on how severe the initial injury was, he could be back in action this week.

Gavin Sawchuk injury update

Oklahoma vs Alabama injury report: Initial updates, news for Week 13

All the latest updates and news on Oklahoma’s injury report ahead of a Week 13 game vs. Alabama.

Injuries have plagued the Oklahoma Sooners during the 2024 season. It’s been an unfortunate reality for Brent Venables and his staff, particularly on the offensive side of the football.

With a pivotal game coming this week in Norman against the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Sooners are hoping for any sort of positive news on the injury front. Oklahoma looks like they’ll get one of their key offensive linemen back this week, Michael Tarquin. That should help provide better protection for quarterback Jackson Arnold.

Here’s a look at Wednesday’s initial injury report.

Best photos from Oklahoma Sooners vs. Missouri Tigers in Week 11

The best photos from Oklahoma Football’s week 11 clash at Missouri Tigers.

The Oklahoma Sooners made their first trip to Columbia, Missouri in over a decade. What started as a defensive war of attrition turned into a drama filled fourth quarter, where miscues became the storyline.

Still, the 97th meeting between OU and Mizzou created some memorable moments like Xavier Robinson’s dominant fourth quarter drive that led to Taylor Tatutm’s touchdown throw to Jackson Arnold. Like Billy Bowman’s fumble return for a touchdown to give the Sooners a lead. Like Drew Pyne’s improbable 75-yard touchdown drive, which included a wing and a prayer throw to Luther Burden on third-and-16. Then there was the tying touchdown to former Sooner Theo Wease.

And if that wasn’t enough, on Oklahoma’s next drive, where all they needed was a field goal, Jackson Arnold fumbled the ball and Missouri returned it for a touchdown.

How that game ended was really just a microcosm of how the Oklahoma Sooners’ season has been. One step forward and two steps back. And that’s how you get to a 5-5 season where you’re now just 1-5 in SEC play.

There are a lot of questions for Brent Venables to answer at this point in his tenure, most notably on the offensive side of the ball. If he doesn’t land a talented offensive coordinator then 2025 could be his last season in Norman.

Oklahoma vs Missouri injury report: Key pieces ruled out on Friday injury report

Oklahoma and Missouri will be missing key players when they meet on Saturday night in Columbia.

It’s a reunion of sorts when the Oklahoma Sooners and the Missouri Tigers meet on Faurot Field on Saturday night. However, when they do, they’ll both be missing key players.

Oklahoma’s injury issues have been extensive all season long. While it looks like they’ll be getting key players like Jalil Farooq and Deion Burks back, they’ll be missing arguably their best offensive player over the last month, Jovantae Barnes.

Barnes sprained his ankle last week during his big day against Maine. The Sooners run game had been a bright spot in recent weeks. Now, Oklahoma will likely turn to true freshman Taylor Tatum to lead the way. Sam Franklin and Xavier Robinson will be a part of the running back rotation.

On Mizzou’s side, they’ll be without starting quarterback Brady Cook and will turn to Drew Pyne. Pyne is a veteran, having started a season for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish back in 2022. He’s been a backup over the last two years and in his most recent appearance, threw three interceptions against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

But there are positive developments on both sides of the matchup in the lastest injury report from the SEC.

Michael Tarquin injury update

Michael Tarquin is still questionable heading into Saturday’s showdown. If Tarquin can give it a go, that would be a huge boost for the Sooners offensive line.

Deion Burks injury update

[autotag]Deion Burks[/autotag] hasn’t played since the loss to Tennessee, but looks on track to play this week against Missouri.

Jalil Farooq injury update

[autotag]Jalil Farooq[/autotag] has missed all but the first series of the season against Temple. Like Burks, Farooq looks set to return against the Tigers.

Jovantae Barnes injury update

Jovantae Barnes has been ruled out, putting the weight of the Sooner’s running game on Oklahoma freshmen Taylor Tatum and Xavier Robinson and veteran transfer addition Sam Franklin.

Gavin Sawchuk injury update

Gavin Sawchuk is still listed as questionable on the Friday injury report. There’s a chance he could play, but if not, the Sooners will need big games from their true freshmen running backs.

Adepoju Adebawore injury update

Adepoju Adebaqwore was upgraded to probable on Friday’s injury report, giving the former five-star prospect a chance to play and bolstering the Sooners defensive end rotation.

Brady Cook injury update

Brady Cook has been ruled out and will miss the matchup with the Sooners. It’s a huge loss for Missouri, who will turn to Drew Pyne at quarterback.

Mookie Cooper injury update

After being downgraded to doubtful on Thursday, Missouri’s Mookie Cooper will be out this week. Cooper is third on the Tigers in receiving and is certainly a loss to their passing attack.

Nate Noel injury update

If you’re a Tigers fan looking for a silver lining heading into week 11, it’s that leading rusher Nate Noel has been upgraded to probable. The Tigers will need to find a way to get Noel the ball on the ground and in the passing game to have some success.
