Seahawks coach Pete Carroll on Dee Eskridge: ‘He looks like the guy we hoped we’d get’

After it was over, coach Pete Carroll gushed over No. 1’s game.

The Seahawks got strong performances from a number of young players in their dominant win over the Chargers last night.

Perhaps the most exciting of them came from rookie wide receiver Dee Eskridge, who totaled 28 yards on just two touches. After it was over, coach Pete Carroll gushed over No. 1’s game.

“He’s a good ballplayer. He’s fast and he’s quick and explosive and his hands are strong and really good. Mentality is really strong about competing. He looks like the guy we hoped we’d get when we picked him.”

Eskridge hasn’t gotten a whole lot of work this offseason as he was slowed by a toe injury, so there could be some stumbling out of the gate once the regular season begins. However, Eskridge won’t be carrying a heavy workload – at least not in his first year with the team. With Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf ahead of him on the depth chart, Seattle can afford to bring him along slowly and let him develop at his own pace.

Pete Carroll says Dee Eskridge ‘responded really well’ in return to practice

Coach Pete Carroll says Eskridge responded well to his return to practice earlier this week.

Seattle Seahawks fans will have to wait just a little while longer to see their team’s first draft pick of 2021 in action. Wide receiver Dee Eskridge is not expected to play in tonight’s preseason matchup against the Denver Broncos, but he is making progress from the toe injury he suffered earlier this offseason that landed him on the physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp.

Coach Pete Carroll says Eskridge responded well to his return to practice earlier this week and is hopeful about him playing next week against the Los Angeles Chargers, per the team website.

“We’re all excited that he made it through—the thing I always tell you is, what happens the next day, can he come back? And he responded really well. Next week will be a really big week for him, whether he plays (in the third preseason game) or not I don’t know, but he’ll be practicing most of the entire week, so we’ll know where we stand there. I’m not setting any markers on next week’s game or anything, but it would be good if he could play, it’d be great to get him on the field if it’s possible.”

Eskridge (5-foot-9, 190 pounds) offers plus speed, clocking a 4.38 time in the 40-yard dash at his pro day. During his time at Western Michigan, he scored 15 touchdowns as a receiver and also impressed as a kick returner in his senior season.

Ideally, Eskridge will grow into the WR3 role behind D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, reinforcing one of Seattle’s greatest strengths.

Seahawks injury updates: Colby Parkinson, Dee Eskridge, Travis Homer

Today, coach Pete Carroll shared updates on a few of them.

The Seahawks have a long list of players who are banged up heading into the preseason. Today, coach Pete Carroll shared updates on a few of them.

First, the bad news. Second-year tight end Colby Parkinson has re-injured the foot that he broke last year and is going to be out for a while.

Parkinson had been getting some positive buzz during training camp, so this is unfortunate. Seattle should be fine at tight end as long as Gerald Everett and Will Dissly hold up, though.

On the bright side, the team’s first draft pick this year should be returning to the field soon. D’Wayne Eskridge suffered a toe injury in the spring that put him on the PUP list to begin camp, but he’s expected to come off it next week as well as running back Travis Homer.

In an ideal world, Eskridge will eventually win the WR3 spot behind D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. He could also be in the mix as a kick returner.
