When the Brooklyn Nets parted ways with Kenny Atkinson in March before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the NBA to go on hiatus, Jacque Vaughn didn’t feel like a serious candidate for the permanent job when compared to the likes of Ty Lue.
Even though Vaughn had a chance to coach the team on an interim basis, experienced coaches with winning in their background or those who have a relationship with either Kyrie Irving or Kevin Durant came across as more viable candidates.
Then the bubble came, and the Nets flourished under Vaughn in seeding play despite their low numbers and loss of multiple key players.
In the process, Vaughn has won over the likes of Jarrett Allen, Garrett Temple and Caris LeVert — whose opinion may matter just a bit more than those of the young big and veteran guard.
While Durant and Irving are expected to have a say in the franchise’s next head coach, Brian Lewis of the New York Post is reporting LeVert will have a voice in this process, as well.
If you ask anybody who was a part of [Vaughn’s] two games before the cut-off and then the whole experience here, they’ll tell you he’s very deserving of the job. He’s done a great job down here winning with less.
Lewis is also reporting DeAndre Jordan and Spencer Dinwiddie will have a say in who becomes Brooklyn’s next head coach.
