Packers GM Brian Gutekunst talks Day 2 of draft: ‘Good night tonight’

The Packers added two additional Day 3 picks and then drafted linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, safety Javon Bullard, running back MarShawn Lloyd and linebacker Ty’Ron Hopper.

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst answered questions for roughly 18 minutes after making one trade and four picks on Day 2 of the NFL draft. The Packers added two additional Day 3 picks and then drafted linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, safety Javon Bullard, running back MarShawn Lloyd and linebacker Ty’Ron Hopper.

Here’s some highlights of what Gutekunst said on Friday night:

— “We added really good football players and really good people to this roster.”

— Despite taking a linebacker and safety, Gutekunst believed he was able to stay “best player available” in each spot. Need does help break ties on players.

— Deal to trade back was done before the Eagles traded up to get Cooper DeJean. Goal was to add picks in case he wanted to trade up later in the second or third rounds.

— Packers wanted to find linebackers who can “run and hit” in the new 4-3 base. Cooper and Hopper both fit the bill. Said both will be excellent special teams players as well.

— On Cooper and Bullard: “A lot of speed. They bring a lot of speed. These guys can run and hit…We got a lot faster, which is what I wanted to do this weekend.”

— Bullard: “Very versatile, can play the nickel, can play safety…Big time leader for that football team at Georgia.”

— On Cooper: “The speed he brings to the table at the linebacker position is rare.”

— On Lloyd: “His ability to make people miss, he’s got a little juice in him. He’s 220 pounds, he breaks tackles.” Thinks he has some return ability too. “He’s pretty put together.”

— On linebackers: “Speed is the name of the game now. These guys have to be able to run.”

— On Bullard’s versatility: “He can play the post, he can come down in the box, he can jump into the nickel. He can do a lot of these, he has done a lot of things in a pro style defense. Very versatile player. We’ll probably start him at safety. He’s versatile enough to do all the things we ask back there.”

— On Lloyd’s fumbles: “We think it’s correctable.” No correlation between hand size and fumbles.

— On Georgia defensive players: “It’s a very successful program…they are getting the top talent.” Not intentional. “It’s a nice phone call asking them if they want to keep that ‘G’ on their helmet.”

— Said there are programs that if a player survives for 2-3 years, you probably know what you’re going to get. Georgia is one of those programs.

— On Hooper: “He’s really physical, he can run, and his stopping power when he takes on ball carriers is impressive…serious minded guy, really helped change that defense.” … “His stopping power as a tackler is really impressive.”

— On Bullard and Xavier McKinney: “X is a dynamic player, and we want to move him around.” Needs Bullard to do things that allow McKinney to move around.

— On Lloyd: “He’s got serious speed, very elusive, great balance. He’s a little different than the backs we have in our depth chart right now.”

— On Hopper’s speed: “We had him in the high 4.5s for us. Explosive athlete. He ran fast on tape, ran fast on the watch.”

— Believes both Cooper and Hopper can be off-ball blitzers that can affect the quarterback. Cooper had 8.0 sacks in 2023; Hopper had 9.5 sacks and 65 pressures in his career. Likes the length of both linebackers to affect passing lanes too.

— “We have a great locker room, we have an excellent cultures…all five of these guys we acquired over the last two days fit what we have going on in there.”

— Comfortable making eight picks on Day 3. “Our numbers have held up strong.” Said they have an ability to move around, maybe pick up extra picks for next year. Eight more picks would create even more competition/potential growth.

— Said he was tempted to move up a few times for players. Glad he was patient.

List of Packers draft picks entering Day 2 of NFL draft

The Packers got started with Jordan Morgan in the first round. Green Bay has four picks on Day 2 and six on Day 3.

The Green Bay Packers checked a big box along the offensive line by selecting Arizona’s Jordan Morgan in the first round on Thursday night, and now general manager Brian Gutekunst will enter Friday night with four picks on Day 2 and six more on Day 3.

The work has only begun. Last year, Gutekunst added Luke Musgrave, Jayden Reed and Tucker Kraft on Day 2. This year, he’ll have four opportunities — and maybe more, if a trade down happens at some point — to add to his young, ascending roster.

PFF identifies a popular draft riser as a top Day 2 target for the Saints

PFF identified a popular draft riser as a top Day 2 target for the Saints. How could Missouri defensive lineman Darius Robinson help the team?

There’s a ton of intrigue surrounding the New Orleans Saints as they finish preparing for the 2024 draft, but we’ve got a good idea about their plans in the first round: necessity is almost forcing them into adding an offensive tackle between Ryan Ramczyk’s health concerns and Trevor Penning’s too-slow development. So what’s more interesting is to consider their options in the second round.

Pro Football Focus’ Dalton Wasserman has a suggestion: Missouri Tigers defensive lineman Darius Robinson. It’s no secret that the Saints didn’t bring enough pressure on opposing quarterbacks last year, but Wasserman writes that Wasserman could help improve there while also upgrading a sneaky-bad New Orleans run defense:

“The Saints need defensive line help, and Missouri’s Darius Robinson could be a versatile target for the team. Robinson played on the edge in 2023 but has plenty of experience inside and could be better suited there. Either way, his strength in the run game and improved pass-rush ability would strengthen New Orleans’ defensive line.”

While Robinson mainly lined up inside against guards earlier in his career (logging 581 of his 762 snaps in the B gap in 2021 and 2022) he moved outside in 2023 and responded with career-highs in sacks (8.5) and total quarterback pressures (27, per PFF charting). The Saints use a ton of three-man fronts and he offers flexibility as someone who can play inside or out. He stood out in practices at the Senior Bowl this year and did well at the NFL Scouting Combine, though his numbers in agility drills were a little underwhelming.

And he certainly has the size they’ve looked for under head coach Dennis Allen. Robinson weighed in at an impressive 6-foot-5 and 285 pounds, with his 34.5-inch arms giving him a rare wingspan. If he was playing football 15 or 20 years ago he’d probably have been moved to offensive tackle. Instead, he uses his size to his advantage. Robinson’s 7.72 Relative Athletic Score doesn’t meet the thresholds that line up with the Saints’ usual standards, but it’s close enough to keep him in consideration with the 45th pick.

If the Saints can address their offensive line early on in the first round, maybe they can afford the luxury of drafting a defender like Robinson in the second round. Checking off that highest priority right away would free them up to look into other team needs like the defensive line and receiving corps (and we should remember they aren’t limited to wideouts; a pass-catching tight end could do well in this offense, too). With so many picks at their disposal in the later rounds, it shouldn’t shock anyone to see the Saints act aggressively to trade up for someone they value highly earlier in the draft. Maybe it’s someone like Robinson.

Broncos’ schedule for Day 2 of training camp

The Broncos practice at 10 a.m. today. Gates to the parking lot open at 8 and gates to the practice facility open at 9. Tickets are required

The Denver Broncos will hit the practice field at 10:00 a.m. MT on Saturday, July 29 for Day 2 of the team’s 2023 training camp schedule. The practice is free to attend, but a free ticket is required (more on that below).

Parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at 13403 Broncos Pkwy beginning at 8:00 a.m. Gates to the practice facility open at 9 a.m. Seating will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis, primarily on the berm on the west end of the practice fields. There will also be some ADA seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Because the berm is not shaded, fans who attend practice are encouraged to wear sunscreen and stay hydrated. Fans can bring the same kind of small bags that are allowed at the team’s stadium. Lawn chairs and umbrellas are not allowed at practice.

Due to Arapahoe County enforcing a 3,000 capacity limit for events at the team’s Centura Health Training Center, fans will need a (free) ticket to attend training camp practices this year.

Those free tickets quickly “sold out,” but fans should check availability on Ticketmaster because some tickets could be returned. (If you have free tickets and cannot attend a practice, there is an easy process to return tickets so other fans can use them.)

Some players will be available to sign autographs at the west end of the practice fields after each practice session.

The team’s complete training camp schedule can be seen below.
