Best of luck to him wherever he goes next.

It’s been a weird trend that’s happened for Michigan football in the 2022 class. The Wolverines get a few commitments and then lose one.

Now, none of the earliest pledges to the 2022 recruiting class are Ann Arbor-bound as they once were. The first two pledges — Alex VanSumeren and Myles Rowser — opted to look elsewhere, with Rowser having committed to Arkansas while VanSumeren is still weighing his options.

Among the early commitments, fourth to join the class, was River Rouge (MI) three-star defensive tackle Davonte Miles, who pledged to the class on Dec. 18, 2020. But now, even he will look to play somewhere else, as he’s decommitting from the class.

Michigan has revamped its coaching staff since Miles committed, with Don Brown out and Mike Macdonald in as defensive coordinator. Though that leaves the Wolverines without a defensive tackle in the class at the moment, it’s still pursuing five-star Walter Nolen and did take three DTs in the 2021 recruiting cycle.

Why Michigan commit Davonte Miles says new defense is a perfect fit

Why the 2022 River Rouge (MI) defensive tackle commit thinks the new defense is perfect for him and how he’s pitching Will Johnson.

WIXOM, Mich. — The thing about recruiting is sometimes if you’re a recruit, you make your choice, and those who were recruiting you, or the coach you thought you were going to be playing for, isn’t there once you arrive.

Four days after 2022 River Rouge (Michigan) defensive tackle Davonte Miles pledged to Michigan, defensive coordinator Don Brown was ousted. It took nearly a month, but Michigan brought in Mike Macdonald, who spent the past seven years coaching linebackers with the Baltimore Ravens.

Given his experience in the NFL as well as coming up under Todd Grantham at Georgia, the expectation is Macdonald will run a 3-4 scheme. The way Miles sees it, that’s a perfect fit for him, and he couldn’t be happier with the hire.

“It’s gonna be kind of easy, because coach Parker and Macdonald run the same defense, that 3-man front,” Miles told WolverinesWire. “So he’s used to using big, athletic guys like me. I fit in perfectly.”

Eventually hoping to go into real estate once his football career is done, Miles says he trusts what Macdonald is bringing to the table. The questions he still has about the school he has committed to tend to be more on the academic side than on the field.

“It’s more education-wise,” “I always ask, what’s your graduation rate? Your dropout rate? If you have a high dropout rate, your school is not that good. Academic-wise, your school is too hard for people.”

Miles says he committed early to ensure he has a spot knowing that he was already all-in for becoming a Wolverine. Now he’s working to try to get others to join.

His primary focus is on Will Johnson, the five-star Grosse Pointe (Michigan) South cornerback who’s narrowed down his choices to Michigan, Ohio State and USC. He said he can feel Johnson’s pull to the Buckeyes, but is working ‘to persuade him slowly,’ to come to Michigan.

As far as what he says to him, the pitch is a no-brainer.

“It’s sponsored by Jordan, it’s at home and his pops played there!” Miles said. “Hopefully trying to get Will there!”

At long last, Michigan football has a defensive tackle committed — and the second in 2022.

The Wolverines have struggled to find a player at the position the past several recruiting cycles, and though the 2021 class has yet to be wrapped up with another signing period coming up in February, the maize and blue are onto 2022. They already have one defensive tackle committed in four-star Alex VanSumeren — brother of current linebacker Ben VanSumeren. Bnd according to 247Sports’ Allen Trieu, Michigan football secured another, getting a commitment from River Rouge (MI) three-star DT Davonte Miles.

Michigan has received their second class of 2022 commitment from inside the state and fourth overall after River Rouge defensive lineman Davonte Miles gave the Wolverines a verbal on Friday afternoon.

Miles (6-5, 275 pounds) chooses Michigan over offers from Michigan State, Iowa State, Kentucky, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and more.

“My mom really wanted me to be home,” Miles explained, “but other people who were helping me in the process didn’t care where I would pick and said they would support me wherever I picked, but I chose Michigan. They have a great program. I love Coach Nua, he loves me, I love Michigan and Coach Harbaugh. Coach Nua has always been honest with me, told me the truth and I like people like that. They kept it 100 with me and and were truthful with me so I feel they’ll be with me through thick and thin.”

Miles has 16 reported offers, which includes Indiana, Iowa State, Kentucky, Michigan State, Syracuse and West Virginia. He’s rated the No. 671 player in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite, the 48th-best defensive tackle and No. 23 player in the state of Michigan in 2022.

He is the Wolverines’ fourth commitment in the 2022 recruiting cycle.
