Hornets add Charles Lee and David Vanterpool to coaching search

The Hornets add two notable assistants to their interview list.

The Charlotte Hornets coaching search has began with some notable candidates as the list continues to grow.

On Tuesday, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported that the team would be interviewing Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson, Bucks assistant Darvin Ham, Mavericks assistant Sean Sweeney, and long-time head coach Mike D’Antoni.

On Wednesday, Wojnarowski’s report expanded as two more names were added to Mitch Kupchak’s list, in Bucks assistant Charles Lee and Nets assistant David Vanterpool.

Charles Lee became a popular coaching candidate last offseason, interviewing for vacancies with the Magic, Pelicans, and Wizards. This go-around, Lee’s name serviced as an early candidate for the Kings job.

David Vanterpool just finished up his first season as an assistant with the Brooklyn Nets following a two-year stint with the Minnesota Timberwolves and a sic-year stint in Portland.

While Vanterpool wasn’t hired, the …

While Vanterpool wasn’t hired, the ex-NBA player with 13 years of coaching experience who’s now an assistant with the Brooklyn Nets hasn’t stopped dreaming that he will be a head coach one day. “When it comes to résumé, I got the résumé,” Vanterpool said to The Undefeated in his first public comments since not being promoted by the Wolves. “I’ve done everything almost in this business. When it comes to experience, I have the experience. There just hasn’t been head coach on my title, but I have the experience. I’ve been coaching for too long and have been in this for too long. “I just want the opportunity and the ability to fail, too. Just like everybody else. I still will get that opportunity.”

Working with the Nets under head coach Steve Nash, Vanterpool was reunited with Kevin Durant and James Harden, whom he coached previously with the Thunder when they advanced to the 2012 NBA Finals. Nash said Vanterpool’s experience coaching and playing in the NBA and Europe made him an attractive hire. “He has the pedigree in terms of his basketball IQ and experience,” Nash said. “He is also very familiar with my guys. He was with James and Kevin in OKC way back when, which is a previous relationship that helps as well. He is doing a great job for us. He is a guy that is going to get an opportunity to be a head coach. He deserves an opportunity.”

League investigating David Vanterpool’s live-ball interference during Nets game

The NBA is investigating a live-ball interference between Nets assistant coach David Vanterpool and a pass from Washington Wizards’ Spencer Dinwiddie on Wednesday. The expectation is that the league comes to a decision in the next 24-to-48 hours and Vanterpool or the Nets could face discipline in the form of a fine or a suspension.

Rockets add top assistant coach David Vanterpool to interview list

Vanterpool has been an assistant coach in the NBA since 2012, and Damian Lillard credited him often for his development in Portland.

The Houston Rockets will interview Minnesota Timberwolves associate head coach David Vanterpool for their vacant head coaching position, as first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Now 47 years old, Vanterpool has worked as an assistant in the NBA since 2012. He was on the Portland bench from 2012 through 2019, where Damian Lillard credited Vanterpool as key to his development.

As a player, Vanterpool had an extended professional career as a guard from 1996 through 2007. He largely played internationally, though he did join the NBA’s Washington Wizards for 22 games in 2001.

Vanterpool left the Trail Blazers for Minnesota in the 2019 offseason, shortly after the Timberwolves hired Gersson Rosas as president of basketball operations. Rosas, of course, was previously the No. 2 executive in Houston after Rockets GM Daryl Morey — which could indicate that Vanterpool is well respected within Morey’s circle.

Vanterpool moved from Portland to Minnesota thanks to an upgrade in title (assistant to associate head coach) and a pay increase, according to The Athletic. In his first season with the Timberwolves, he was largely tasked with improving the team’s defense, which rose to No. 20 (by defensive rating) in the NBA. While that might not sound too impressive at first glance, they were No. 24 or worse in each of the prior five years.

After Vanterpool’s exit, the Blazers fell from 53-29 and No. 3 in the Western Conference in 2018-19 to 35-39 and No. 8, respectively, this season. Their defensive rating plunged from No. 16 to No. 27.

In addition to Vanterpool, Houston’s candidates are now believed to include Clippers assistants Ty Lue and Sam Cassell; former Brooklyn head coach Kenny Atkinson; Dallas assistant Stephen Silas; Denver assistant Wes Unseld Jr.; and former Houston head coach Jeff Van Gundy.
